I just talked to Connie Conkle about the minimum transcript standards. And I asked her if "may" meant it was an option. She said no, it's not an option. It should be on every videotaped depo transcript.

I ALWAYS forget to synch with the VAOFR and the VAOFRS never ever ever ask. And we're often off by a minute or two. Even if we start at the same time (coincidentally), by the second or third break we're off.<br />
<br />
Here's how to fix the starting time or a time during the dep to synch with videographer:<br />
1. view/ show time stamps and click elapsed time<br />
2. in file, go to first timestamp and press SHIFT f4; SET TIME<br />
3. manually change the time to, say, 083000 if the dep starts at 8:30. don't worry about…

4. during the dep when you're at a break and VAOFR says it's 9:16 but you have 9:17, go to the first 9:17 timestamp and switch it to 091600.<br />
4. switch to elapsed time in ASCII SETTINGS!!!! (very important!!)<br />

As a videographer I think that time stamps are a huge benefit. If there is a need for editing, then locating the cuts is a snap with the time stamps. Also, being dead nuts on with the time isn’t all that imperative because if you are 30 seconds off at the beginning you’ll be 30 seconds off throughout and you and you can adjust. I think that some software programs let you add time stamps in after the deposition which is one less thing for the reporter to deal with at the start of a deposition.

If a job is going to be synched to the video, the videographer will require a non-timestamped copy of the ASCII. The reporter's timestamps will completely screw with the synching software. If you are sending a timestamped copy of the ASCII on a video job, I would also recommend sending a version without stamps.

As per the code 2473(3)<br />
<br />
"Timestamping may only be printed on a transcript under any of the following circumstances:<br />
<br />
A) when a deposition is videotaped<br />
B) when requested by counsel on the record, or<br />
C) when a transcript will have not less than 56 characters per line"<br />
<br />
So in other words, if you're doing a video job it's appropriate. If your client wants it, give it to them.<br />
As long as you're consistent everything will be fine.<br />
<br />
For me I ALWAYS timestamp a video job, I don't even ask them.

Ditto for me -- I only add in timestamps when required by agency or counsel. There are still a couple of agencies out there that *encourage* reporters to timestamp every job, even the nonvideo jobs, although that topic seems to have faded out in the past couple of years, so . . .<br />

FYI, there is a software program that some agencies use (not sure what it's called) that overrides (manipulates) the reporter's timestamping. Syncing time with video is great, but it can still be "wiped out" by the agency using this program and they'll add in/revise the times. I get requests from some agencies to leave out my timstamps -- they're going to add them in later to match what the videographer has. (?) Maybe someone out here who works in a large firm production department can add further details here. (?)<br />

FWIW, I just adjusted a 130-page transcript (rough form) from 56 characters per line down to 52 characters. It added 7 more pages.<br />

I think you have to sync it before you start writing and the timestamp goes in the transcript because I don't think you can change the timestamp after the job is done --- If you know what I mean....don't know if I'm saying it correctly.
