Having nothing, in my opinion, is not an option.  The only other choice would be inserting periods, but that would break it up too much and look funny.

I agree..... i've had a few reporters tell me that it's wrong.  So I thought I'd throw it out there.

Just out of curiosity, when they told you the commas were wrong, how did they tell you you should be writing that?

Wouldn't you treat this series the same as you would something like this:

"We waited many, many hours before our meal came."

So, commas.

I guess I dodn't look at it as a series or a descriptor.  But I agree, commas!
