Unfortunately .25 per page per copy has apparently been the accepted rate in NY for a number of years. With newer agencies that I start working for, I quote them higher copy rates. But the ones I've been working for in NY pay .25. And there are a few smaller agencies that don't pay for copy sales at all.

Now, you say, "Don't work for those agencies." But there just isn't enough work here for reporters to start cutting out agencies that they work for. Some of us are struggling really badly to stay above water. If it were they way it used to be, where there was more work than a reporter could handle, we could make demands. Right now here the advantage is with the agencies.
CRAZY.
@Kelli - Lindsay is clearly saying more than that. She's suggesting that sharing information about lowballers in this highly fragmented, largely solo operated business is illegal, or potentially subject to antitrust measures. That is IMO a terribly misinformed opinion (sorry Lindsay).

Price fixing pertains to competitors who have clear control a market (major airlines, large energy companies, major retailers, etc.) who conspire to set prices in their primary markets.

Sharing non-protected, non-proprietary information through the U.S. Postal Service or even via email is not protected unless specifically noted in the document or documents sent by the soliciting party. Even then, it may not be protected unless you have given consent through non-disclosure (signature, etc.)

Sharing that information on a loosely organized, voluntary forum of like-minded individuals is perfectly reasonable, unless you live in Russia.
I am confused, too, Lorrie. We are discussing rates, not fixing rates, correct? Is that not allowed on this board? I am new so I am not too sure. But I know it is too all of our benefit to know what the industry standard is (or is not).

If we are in touch with the industry, we all know what the acceptable rates are, and we recognize when someone is lowballing us. I'm just saying it's naive to accept a job from an agency without getting that information up front. If you are forced to taken an agency to small claims court for underpayment, showing the judge a printout of their email to you quoting rates and then your paycheck will go a long way!
Lindsay is just saying to get…tag:csrnation.ning.com,2017-01-12:1736041:Comment:13489452017-01-12T23:20:25.229ZKelli Combs (admin)http://csrnation.ning.com/profile/Kellicombsadmin

I'm sure we all agree that a contract is a contract, and must be honored, and that breaking a contract is subject to penalties imposed by law. No one here has proposed anything of the sort to my knowledge.

To be perfectly clear, a business document or correspondence that contains a simple price sheet may or may not have contract restrictions. Read it carefully. In many cases a business document inviting services at stated prices can be shared with impunity.

No one is suggesting that laws should be broken, or that contracts or NDAs be violated. If you prefer, put your head in the sand at your risk, but in my view there's no reason to be afraid of bonding as a community with similar interests. Our profession is already under daily assault by the commercial sector, and being divided and in the dark makes it that much easier to destroy our livelihood.

Again, please correct me if you believe these statements to be unfair or legally questionable.
