I do some proofing when I can't get editing work. I charge .30/pg, so it's not a lot but it should be good to familiarize yourself with everything again. Eclipse probably has a trainer that you can get to come out I'm thinking. (Of course you would have to pay them.) Good luck to you!

Nanci, thank you for your response. My friend sent me 75 pages of a trial to proof, just for me to practice, and then she'll check it. She is willing to help me get going and will have work for me once I'm working, but I worry about imposing on her since she has her official position AND has her own agency. I went with her to the CCRA convention last Saturday to check out the vendors, and I was impressed that Eclipse has 24/7 tech support.

Jean,
I was wrong about where to send the audio. It's www.yousendit.com.

I have Case Cataylst but Eclipse is a really good one. I honestly wish I had gone with Eclipse. The softwares are very similar. I'm not that computer-savy & I do the basics. I'm sure the on-line class would work but if your friend can help you, you can probably do it without. I charge 1.00 for editing a page with no audio & 1.30 with audio jobs (more work). I am
reporting a little & editing & proofing now.
Maybe your friend can give you an unedited job to practice on, (even if she wants to give it to someone else to edit). Maybe she can let you know how you're doing. To dump and receive the audio file you can use www.yousendthisfile.com. Good luck.

I was a California CSR in the late seventies to early eighties , when I quit to raise my family. I'm now interested in becoming a scopist, and possibly a reporter again (not sure about this!), and have been spending time brushing up on my English, vocab, medical terminology, etc., and researching how to learn scoping, since I never used computers when I was reporting. I'm still able to read notes, and write, but am confused on which route to take.

Should I invest in an online scoping school? A reporter friend tells me I don't need it, but I'd like the opinion from scopists. I'm leaning towards an online school so I learn all aspects of the job, including how much to charge, billing, files to practice with, and getting feedback on those practice files.

Also, how do you decide which software to learn/purchase? Do most scopists have more than one software? My CSR friend will give me work, and she uses Eclipse, but isn't CaseCATalyst the most widely used? I assume I should buy the latest version, but please give me any input you can.

Thank you!

I heard that importing a PDF from Eclipse into Case Cat the latest version that the first few caption pages are a nightmare. Does anyone know about this? Also, I would imagine that when the PDF is brought into Case Cat that the audio doesn't sync up. I was hoping to be able to listen and stop check when the work comes back from the Eclipse scopist. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sue

Hi, I am a recently retired court reporter after 30 years of service. I was an official for 20 years, and had my own freelance business for 10 years. I am very confident that I can produce very accurate transcripts with a great turnaround time. I am on Case Catalyst 10 with audiosync. Please contact me at jvfalo@comcast.net.

I have been reporting for 10 years. Due to some health issues, I have been limited to PI & workers' comp for years. At the moment I'm not able to take any depos. I am trying to break into the editing field. Since I have edited my transcripts, this should work. Please contact me at nnrep@hotmail.com

Hi. I am a Case Catalyst gal looking for scopists. I'm in need of a scopist that can pick up the slack and help me put out a quality transcript. I appreciate teamwork. Please send contact info and a transcript. You can take out the caption, change speaker ID's.

Thank you in advance!

Hello,
I am a former California CSR living in North Texas with 10+ years in the industry. I use CaseCATalyst software for scoping and proofing services.
I always use Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Gregg Reference Manual, English Guide for Court Reporters, The Merck Manual, Stedman’s Medical Dictionary, Black’s Law Dictionary, Martindale-Hubbell, and One Word, Two Words, Hyphenated for reference materials. I also research company names, products, doctors' names, and hard-to-find terminology for correct spelling and usage by way of the Internet.

I can supply two names for references, if you'd like. I'd love for you to contact me and use me for your next job (and hopefully lots more to follow)!
