Feast or Famine

Sittin' by that phone, twiddling your thumbs as the crickets are loudly chirping away?  Maybe it was the shower you decided to skip to take that last-minute emergency depo blast that went out on CSR Nation. Is it the bad haircut you just got? Or maybe your breath stinks. If you're wondering if anyone else is in the same boat, join this group and just ask! :D

If you're getting pale and starting to forget what the sunshine looks like, share the good news!

I was scheduled for four days last week - none actually went.  Tuesday job settled when I got there, then rest of days didn't confirm.   Very slow for me in San Francisco/San Jose, CA.  I have two days scheduled for the next two weeks.

Slow in GA, Kerry.

Just checking to see how it is around the US.  Slower than normal April for me so far.  An attorney told me he expected this year to be slower for depos all over.  Hope that's not the case!

If any of you busy reporters need a proofreader, I can help you out there, and I can provide references.  I've been doing that for a year now, and have been a reporter for almost 30 years, so I have lots of experience and am very anal retentive about errors/typos.  :)

I wish you ladies would send some of that work to the southern Illinois/St. Louis, MO area.   Everyone is dead here.  I was in a (10 page) depo today where three attorneys said around here that everything is going to mediation b/c there's been so many judges retire and all became mediators, and the remaining judges are all sending their cases to mediation to help out their retired buddies and b/c they don't want to hear the trials.   Oh, dear......     Also, there's a LOT of law firms disbanding in the St. Louis area, too, due to no business.  It's very sad around here.   If anyone close to southern IL or St. Louis, MO needs any help, let me know.  :)

This is the busiest I've been in a couple of years here in SC.

I've been super busy in KC.  Now I am getting backlog of pages out.  It is quiet this week.  It is spring break.  Next weekend is Easter and looks to be quiet.

Just wondered how work is around the country.  I have a one busy week and then two slow weeks.  Colorado has had a lot of local tort reforms and pilot projects limiting depositions that doesn't help!

Anita, very well said.  I never thought about the issues you brought up.  Makes sense.  Very sad state of affairs.

here has never been an easy way to determine why some months are slow and some are busy in our field. But if one were to read recent events closely, one could very well see a pattern taking place. For example, when the American Bar Association has made recommendations shortening law school education from three years to two because of declining law school enrollment and the lack of legal jobs, one might be able to forsee how that translates into a diminution of legal service providers which obviously includes us. The economy has changed our field forever. When we are rightfully expected to increase our skills like realtime, but are being asked to give it away for free, when reporting agencies are vying for clients and paying rates to reporters that more resemble those of twenty years ago, when agencies are not respecting guidelines to only use certified reporters in some states, one can see how the interplay of ethics and economics play a major role in creating both instability and unpredictibilty in or field.
