Winery in Destin, Florida

Hello everyone! I figured I'd post about a great little place I frequent whenever I'm in Destin. It's called Emerald Coast Wine Cellars, and it's in Miramar Beach, FL (which is essentially Destin).…Continue

Anyone have a recommendation for a great merlot that might be available at Trader Joe's? I've noticed lately they are carrying a lot of wines from various vineyards not only in the Pacific NW and California but South American and Africa, Spain, Portugual and many many others.

Yes, Roger, very true. The bacteria was called phylloxera. Funny, I was just reading about that in Charlie Trotter's wine book. That is an interesting tidbit.

Little known fact about cabernet wines is that the French vineyards were decimated by a bateria that wiped out all their in-country vines. However, before that happened, as luck would have it some entrepenurial folks had shipped some of those famous vines to South America and Australia for their own wine production aspirations. Now those vines have wound their way back to France...an interesting tidbit of wine history as told me by another wine connoisseur who has a tasting room in Washington State.

Nothing like a good Pinot Noir. Firestone has a good one, and we just had a German one that wasn't too expensive. I went to look for the bottle to post the name, but Ted finished and tossed it into the recycling.

Love the Four Graces pinot blanc!

Melissa Thueme posted a comment about a wine called Kitchen Sink. It's a CA red blend. Anyone else tried it? I'm putting it on my list for this week.

I tried a new one. I don't remember the year, but it was called Kitchen Sink. It's a California Red Table Wine that has a mixture of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Sirah. It is the best red that I've tried. It has the smoothest finish that I've ever found. It's great with pastas, and well, just for drinking in my opinion.

Haven't heard much from this group lately. What are you drinking? I uncorked a 2006 Merryvale Napa Valley Merlot to go with my pasta today. It's lovely. Fruity, smooth, yet held up well to the tomato basil sauce. Cheers!

Kelli - what a wonderful reason to break open the bubbly! I'll have to remember that one at the weekend :)

In case you've just joined us, we are holding a virtual wine tasting over this site on Thursday, Oct. 22, 9 pm Eastern and 6 pm Pacific. Everyone is welcome to join in. You need to buy a bottle of Segura Viudas Brut Reserva sparkling wine and be ready to pop the top by Thursday. Should be a hoot!

Kelli,
Try "travicello" from Italy, technically a white, but orange in color, it has the amazing flavor of some reds (chevalier de bayard, for instance) with about half the cals,,,,makes 50+ guys like me only have to bike 6 miles instead of 12 like the old days,,,lol, capische?
enjoy
