There is a new law going on the ballot in November as to whether genetically-modified food should be labeled as such.  Everyone needs to vote that it should be labeled.  I think it's important that food be labeled properly so we are all informed.

Vote, vote, vote!!

I used to go weekly to this produce shop on 25th Street in San Mateo.  It's run by Mexicans, which is fine.  I've been going there every week for the past year because their produce is amazing.  Well, last week I went in and asked two people working there where their produce comes from; is it grown locally or is it shipped in from another country or what??

They could not answer me.  They looked at me like I was nuts?  Are you kidding me?  You would think they are asked this question a lot.  I'm very disappointed.  My husband goes to the gym every morning at 5:00 a.m. and talked to one of these older ladies that I think has a crush on him - anyways, she said to shop at Tragg's Market about 10 minutes from me and it's all organic foods and fish and great prices.

I may have to check that out because even the richest person can't manage spending that kind of money at Whole Foods every week.  No wonder it's called "Whole Paycheck" by so many!

Whole Foods is expensive!  We have a place over here called Frazier Farms.  I like to go there because of the wonderful vegetables, cheese, and fruits, but my husband loves their fresh bread and fish.  For $100 we can get a whole lot more at Frazier Farms than we can at Whole Foods (and the quality of their vegetables is comparable, and I'm picky about the quality of my vegetables).

We also have a place over here that used to be called Boney's.  They recently underwent a name change and their produce section has suffered, but they have a wonderful assortment of what I'll call "bin food" (items in a bin that you use a scoop, things like nuts or dried beans or chocolate covered peanuts).  It really is a great place to shop for certain things.  Plus, it's the only place I'll buy sliced meats.

I have at least five markets that I go to for my shopping.  Some places excel where others fail.

So, Kelli, keep looking at some of the "odd" supermarkets around you.  You might find a "Frazier Farms" there that you never knew existed.

Animal, Vegetable, Mineral by Barbara Kingsolver is a really good book that is based on her family's farm and their desire to eat only locally grown food.  Also gives a lot of background on the industrial food chain and the history of food.  She is one of my favorite writers.

Yeah, that's a good idea.  I went to Whole Foods yesterday and bought some soup, few salads and mostly fresh vegetables.  My bill was $173.00.  I thought that was super expensive.  Oh, yeah, I had some salmon and sea bass too.  Still, very pricey.

I just made a juice drink for lunch.  I have this high-powered blender.  I put frozen blueberries, peaches, kale, carrots, radishes, celery, tomato, avocado, apple with some flax seed oil and mix it all up.  It is so tasty; the fruit makes the veggies tast really good.  Also, I think you need the roughage so I just blend it all together.  I'm having one a day.  Oh yeah, forgot there is two cloves of garlic in there too.  Supposed to be really good for you.

I'll check out some of the movies.

Kelli, there are organic produce delivery services around. We had Farm Fresh To You. I just ended it because there are so many farmers markets around here, so I figured I'll just pick out what I like, but getting the big box of produce was fun!  There are also the same types of services for meat, but we just don't eat enough meat for that.

I just looked online and Whole Foods Market has organic everything.  I may just have to start shopping there I guess.  Sort of out of the way, but......

I understood from my videographer yesterday that a lot of people have problems with gluten and that's because years ago they genetically modified wheat and now people are allergic to it and have to eat "gluten free" foods, including her.

I tell you, I'm not even sure where to shop anymore.  Very scary what's being done to our food and we don't really have a lot of say.

Patricia, do you ever get on Netflix and watch their documentaries?  There is one or two on genetically modified foods, especially corn and wheat.

There is a big uproar here in Sonoma County over genetically modified foods. I would love to learn more about it if anyone knows of a neutral source that is not too scientific for a layperson to understand.
