STARTING AN AGENCY

I am seeking advice from anyone with experience running a deposition agency on how I would go about starting my own. I was a Los Angeles Superior Court Reporter for 15 years, so I don't have actual hands-on experience with depositions. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

URGENT REQUEST TO ALL COURT REPORTERS READ NOW

There is a Bill before the Judicial-Media Committe, Sub Committe Audio Recording of Court Proceedings in the State of Connecticut allowing for audio recording of proceedings. This Bill, if passed, could have potentially dire consequences for freelancers as well as officials. Please send an email to choward@goodwin.com with a copy to support@ctreporting.org to voice your opposition to the Bill.

NCRA

okay:) One last question for tonight... lol.

I wanted opinions on how important or valuable it is to be a member of NCRA, if it is at all. I have not done it only because of the amount of money everything costs; the dues and then to take the RPR and everything like that. I have an AAS in Court Reporting and graduated with a 3.76. Isn't that enough? I was told I was not going to make more money either if I am certified, but yet they do want me to take the RPR. And now I've got the… Continue

Identifying Exhibits

Hello, everyone! I just for some reason am having a problem remembering the exact procedure for identifying exhibits. Is it when the exhibit is first mentioned (i.e., I'll have this marked as Exhibit Number 1) or is it when they actually talk about what the exhibit is? I appreciate all of the help!!!

Feelin' like a hamster spinning her wheel

Lately, I've been feelin' like a hamster on a wheel. I'm trying to work more so I can take up some slack in our financial situation. But the more I make, the more I have to pay out. It's craziness.

I pay quarterly, and yet I still owe taxes. And then on top of it, I'm trying to make more than I did last year because I need to make the ends meet, but then I think I'll end up owing more taxes. Wah!!

The economy is not my friend at the moment.

Well, just venting.… Continue

COVERING DEPOS

Has anyone noticed that often you get an email regarding very enticing international work or heavy realtime work and the individual doesn't reach out to you when you have called?

Stentura8000LX versus any other machine that would be compatiable with a Vista desk top.

Hi,

I have had nothing but problems with this machine. Can anybody help. I think I got a bum machine or something and unfortunately I rushed into it without looking at what else is available. I have already invested a lot of money and right now I am stuck at a stand still. Extremely frustrated.

Even the battery(s) won't hold a charge. Can anybody recommend a reputable company that will take a trade-in for something more reliable and give me some tips and some names of machines that… Continue

Would you use sic???

During the depo the hearing reprensentative referred to me on the record "I'm just showing the transcriptionist...." Normally I would not even consider putting (sic) behind the word transcriptionist, but this is the same hearing rep that pulled a fast one a few months back where he was instructed by his law firm and also the applicant's law firm to send me the doctor's report so I could get all the spellings, which he was upset about having to copying, so he called my firm the next day and… Continue

Has this ever happened to you?

I was in a depo last week (Vol III of who knows how many) when the witness started having a panic attack. She didn't have one or two, but three attacks throughout the day. Not only that, she dumped/spilled her water on the opposing attorney. I'm pretty sure she did this on purpose, bc she told him she hated him right before the water went all over his papers and his lap. Am I supposed to put anything in the transcript regarding this? He didn't say anything about wanting it in there.

Where do you edit?

I have been working from my living room and my couch for quite some time now because we have beenrevamping our house completely. Finally, yesterday, I went and bought a new office chair and all that fun stuff. My husband doesn't think I'll use it all though. lol.

So this brings me to my question that I was just wondering where a lot of reporters work when they're not in a depo? Do you work on the couch, at your kitchen table, or in a home office?

I am just hoping I will… Continue

SCREAM/FIGHT

SCREAM/FIGHT

Imagine you are on a New York street in the wee hours of the morning. As you walk by an alley, you see a man stabbing a woman and grabbing the purse she's clutching. She's near death from the many blows he's delivered. Do you scream, "Stop"? Do you yell for others to help? Do you attempt to fight off the attacker to save the woman before it's too late? Do you walk by and do nothing? Surely you would offer some kind of aid.

Why when you see people causing the… Continue

What do Kansas, Central America and South America have in common??? Me!

Lori and Toto have returned to Kansas from Costa Rica!  I'm so thankful for all the time I spent on the organic farm - but I'm divorced now, and back to my maiden name - Lori Byrd ... and happy to run back and forth between the States and Latin America for work.

I'd love to find more work in Central and South America. My Spanish-speaking is a valuable asset, I believe, for running around Latin America and communicating with all involved in doing depositions.

There are several…
