I love this site, I just found a group of students who are meeting twice a week under the tutelege of a retired court reporter in this area that I can join. I may just be a court reporter someday after all!

Apparently, I can't even cut and paste correctly on Word! I've done it before on the really old version of Microsft Word, but this fancy new system is weird and it just gives me a a little clipboard symbol after I highlight the area I want copied and I haven't been able to drag it over to the new document. I'm probably missing one simple step! But I would like your opinion on the formatting, since you said that Courier New 13 is unusual. Can I email you the sample page setup?

Thanks so much for your help, I will try out this PC Shorthand, it looks like it has a free month trial, and I'm sure it will help save time. I mostly have had just the issues of making the document look like a proper transcript, the firm did send me examples of various documents and they told me what spacing, font, line numbers, etc that they require. But the trouble is that they want font Courier New 13, and Microsoft doesn't have 13, the spacing on the left and right margins has to be 1.25", but I can only get it to do 1.2 or 1.3, and there's no way I can make every page have 22 lines with 56 characters per line. I guess I thought that there was some download that would let me have a nice, empty page, where I could tell it exactly what I needed to start a document from scratch! You know, the way Microsoft should be!
But I really just wanted to do this while practicing for the RPR to gain as much knowledge as possible about how to set up transcripts and to get used to the way they need to look for DC and Va, and after this frustration for the last few weeks, I may change my mind and just wait til I have my Eclipse Professional software!
But thanks again for your advice, it's so nice to get in touch with people in the same business, especially when we're in the same area, and to know that there are nice people willing to help!

I just relocated to the DC area from Texas, where I attended court reporting school for three years. I am now going it alone, trying to someday pass the RPR so I can start reporting in Washington. I have a job offer to type transcripts from home in the meantime, but I have had massive amounts of trouble typing these with Microsoft Word (Vista!) and I was wondering if you know of a transcript format download or something similar. Surely transcriptionists don't type every line, spacing, dashes and colons, etc from scratch? Especially on the opening/ending pages?
My school didn't give us a class on this because we had computer aided transcription classes instead, which of course set up all the lines and page numbers provided, along with the proper opening pages worded in the format necessary for the state of Texas. Other than purchasing the Eclipse professional version (4 grand!) or finding a good old fashioned typewriter, I'm at a loss. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Jennie, sports undeniably play a big role in you and your BF's life, and that's terrific. I guess it's important that couples have a thing or two that they both love and enjoy doing. I wish you both the best!

I wouldn't say billiards is such a big sport in the Philippines. It’s a game that’s played by certain sectors of the population: those who are aficionados, those who frequent bars, and the lower-end enthusiasts who engage in it kind of in a communal manner (there’s a pool hub in the village or neighborhood where people can play for very low rates). I guess it just became a sport that Filipinos became very much familiar with, thanks to our billiards champions and heroes. And since it is a sport that we excel in, it has conquered the people's consciousness. That's our mentality, I guess. As a developing country (others would say "Third World") with not so much to be proud of, we magnify the little successes that we achieve. Every little achievement in any field or arena bloats our ego. So no wonder that Pacman's success is such a big deal to us. It's a cause for national/nationwide jubilation and celebration. Don't get me wrong. I’m proud to be Filipino; I’m just offering my perceptions.

One thing is for sure, though: the most popular sport here is basketball, notwithstanding the fact that we haven't been excelling in it. It’s played by people who come from all walks of life. By the way, am I correct that billiards is a slightly different sport from pool?

You seem to have many Filipino friends. I don't know your friend, though, but I hope she does well. I assume she's Filipino-American. You're, obviously, very into sports. I wonder how you manage being a transcriptionist and at the same time engaging in sports.

Hi, Jennie. You're right. Manny commands such loyal following in the country. When he's fighting, the entire nation stands still. Criminality also takes a hiatus. On his last fight, only 1 misdemeanor in Manila was recorded, just a petty theft. I'm not usually a fan of boxing, since I view it as akin to cockfighting and duels between animals. But his last fight made me proud of him. Many are wishing he would make a good judgment and not enter politics.

Thanks for the invite to your network and your comment on transcription rates and, of course, your appreciation of the Filipinos' supremacy in the world of pool. You did not mention that we also have Manny Pacquiao for boxing and Paeng Nepomuceno for bowling. But of course, America is still the greatest, the best in most arenas. Now that I've read your entire "My Page," when you're transcribing do you type with a regular keyboard, or do you steno?

And, by the way, as slow as it's been for some parts of the country as far as depos, I'd bet if you put an ad up stating what you need, expect, and pay, you'd probably get some help.
