Hi, Marla,

Just read your thread on Eclipse punc. I'm on Procat. Just like you, I use no number conversion and write EXACTLY what I want it to look like on paper. If it's a number, I hit a number; if it's a word, I hit a word.

I hit DLA*RZ after my # stroke, and it puts it through the numbers to the beginning. I think you can probably do it in Eclipse, too, without having number conversion on. I really would be shocked if it is not a feature. You could obviously do it in Stenocat and I can do it on Procat. If you can't on Eclipse, I sure would suggest it to them to get that as an added feature.

I plan to switch over to Eclipse in the future, so I'm glad you posted the thread.

Hi Marla! If you can make the next outing in OC on the 2nd or 3rd weekend of March, I can help by arriving early, set-up, whatever. I'll just be out of town the 1st and last weekend of the month. The 4th weekend is Easter weekend...

Hey,

Thanks for setting up the SushiDan meeting. It was great to see you. You had a terrific turnout considering the weather. I can't wait for the next one, especially since it might be closer to my neck of the woods.:))

The Italy-Greece cruise will be my second for continuing education. Did one to Mexico last September. Had 26 reporters and about 80 of their friends and family members. In addition to the Italy cruise, we'll be doing one to the eastern Caribbean in March of '09. Let me know if you or any of your friends are interested.

Feel free to pummel away with questions. I may not always be able to get back to you by your deadline, but I'll do my best. In return, I'd like your permission to use your questions in my seminars as real-world examples of problems reporters encounter. I won't mention your name, of course, and I'll change any names in the sentences, if you haven't already, to protect the guilty.

I agree completely about both Santorini and Venice. So different, yet each perfect in its own way. I'll definitely post photos. Wish you could come.

You can't hate Eclipse!!! No. No. We'll have to have a serious discussion over drinks. ;)

Hi Marla,

Did you get my e-mail? I sent you an e-mail saying that I can help you out as far as proofreading.

I'm thinking if the SoCal social is during the NCRA convention, we should just have it at Downtown Disney somewhere like the Uva Bar.

If you it's just a general OC Social, then maybe Irvine Spectrum. They've got a ton of places. I know they have a Yardhouse for the alcoholics. There's a Dave & Busters. There's PF Chang's. There's CPK. So whatever.

Which version of Eclipse are you on?

Have you taken on training with a trainer?

The only tip I have for you is to go out and do it. That's the only way to learn the software. I think it is fairly intuitive especially if you are somewhat computer savvy, which I think you are. You'll find that many of the shortcuts that you use in Word or Excel you can use in Eclipse, things like CTRL-X to cut and CTRL-V to paste.

Remember you have support. And for $600/yr, feel free to call them up for any questions on how to format or anything. They will help you. Also, feel free to give me a call at any time.

I'm looking forward to the NCRA convention in Anaheim this year. Eclipse usually has a couple of training sessions the first day or so. I plan on signing up for one of those.

We should have a little SoCal social on one of the free nights during the convention.

Marla,
I want to thank you for the invitations you have extended to me to join in on the socal reporter outings. I would definitely take you up on that, but I live in Florida now. My heart will always be in California.

Like what kind of improvements? What are your favorites? I actually use a scopist 90% of the time. As long as it's not shutting down in Realtime, I guess it would be worth the try.

Marla,

Wow, that is really scary about the latest download. I will definitely not be doing that. I've been on StenoCat for 15 years now, and the thing that bugs me the most is going to Windows, I lost so much of my number conversion.

Can you continue to use StenoCat on the job and then just import your non-expedited jobs into Eclipse until you've got the bugs worked out?

Quite the daunting task, but I'm sure converting will be worth it. Good luck to you, and thanks again for responding!

Marla,

Thanks so much for your response on the briefs. Really a great concept. I'm going to give it my best shot at tomorrow's depo. Was wondering, why the switch from StenoCat? That's what I use now. And how great to have those get-togethers! How many people attend? I'd love to attend something like that in Northern California. I'd like to add you as a friend if you don't mind. Thanks again!

Hi Marla,
Thanks for writing.
Most of the freelancers I know have their
own clients (but I'm old.) The rest are
independent contractors. Actually I've never heard of anyone being an employee
in MN, but I live under a rock, so it could happen I guess.

HI Marla! It was not hard at all. There was one word that came up over and over, crotchet, or something like that. If you didn't have that in your dictionary, then you had trouble... But the speed is very doable. I love your SoCal CSR group! That is great. I"ll try to find you at the DRA convention in February... and good luck!!

Marla,
Good luck on switching to Eclipise.
An associate of mine switched from
StenoCAT to Eclipse and it took her
over a year to get everything set up
correctly. I hope you don't have as
much trouble. I am on StenoCAT and plan
to stay on StenoCAT. I have learned
the software through and through and
changing just seems to be more trouble
than it is worth at this point. But when the day comes that I decide to go
into captioning, I may have to change
softwares if StenoCAT hasn't updated
their software to accommodate captioning.
Good Luck!!
