Hello again...I hate to be a nag, but I would like to buy the LS from you as soon as possible because of the Canadian dollar being at such a good exchange rate right now, and also so that my uncle can bring it to me here in Canada so I can avoid a $200-300 customs fee. He is coming the 26th of June, so please respond asap...again, I'm sorry if I'm pestering you! lol
Thank you! :)

Hi again! Can I call you so we can discuss details of shipping/payment and some other questions I had about your LS?
If so, please let me know your phone number and what day and time I can call you. I think California time is 4 hours behind northeast time, right?
Anyway, here's my email if you want to email me the phone number privately: elisadeangelis@hotmail.com
Thanks a bunch!

They might throw in a test...

Hey, Christina...

Even if you're not able to visit Atlanta, I can get you e-mails of some reporters so you can get some questions answered to help you with your decision. Our school, during the day, tests three times per week. Tuesday through Thursday, I believe. They might through in a test on Monday, and we don't have school on Friday. I wish it could be more, cause I love having the option to test or not to test. Thanks for the nice comment about the pictures. I'll have more to post when I come back from Jamaica at the end of this month. I'm so excited. I'm ready for a vacation. Hey, I know you mentioned that you were almost finished. Congratulations!!! Whew! We all know it ain't easy, but that's why, I think, we like court reporting; it's a challenge like none other. Got any tips you would like to share? I'd be glad to receive them. Right now, I'm just trying to broaden my vocabulary by doing harder lit.s like congressionals, legal opinions, some medical, etc. so I won't get thrown off when I'm flowing. LOL. I'm also listening to very high speeds and practicing below for accuracy and above my speed, so then when I test, it's a breeze. I always feel like I should do more. What dictation material would you suggest purchasing or using to get me to graduation?

Hey, Christina...

When I return back to school, because I'm an on-line student right now, due to the fact that I just had a baby, I will be testing out of my 160 Q&A and Lit. I may even get one or more of my 180 J.C.s. I'm very anxious to go back to in-house and take some live tests. Now for your question on when I expect to finish, you should know better. I planned to be finished by, no later than, the end of this year, but it will have to be sometime next year. I have some academics to get caught up on, and, of course, my speed. With my husband in Afghanistan and me left at home with six kids that include a four-month old and a terrible two-year old, I'd say I have my hands full. If you're really considering working as a court reporter in Atlanta, I meet with a group of reporters each month for dinner, and maybe I can get you together with some of them to learn more about working here. They're all from different counties, some doing freelance and others either working for agencies or for themselves. Let me know if you're interested. E-mail me at: SexyStenoMom@yahoo.com

Hi Christina,
LOL! I am somewhat on the fence about the LS too, but I am on the fence about BUYING it. However, I think it's one of those things that I have to at least try, or else I will always wonder or regret not having given a shot. I practice with an LS that belongs to my school, but I don't like it much because of the pads they put on the keys. First, the keys are sticky. Second, the keys are too far apart from each other, but there is a way to fix that by sticking the pads on the keys so that it somewhat resembles the closeness of the keys of the elan cybra, which I am used to writing with. Two other students got the LS, and they placed the pads closer to each other to close up the gaps between the * and F... basically, the keys on the right side all shifted a bit towards the asterick key, and the STPH and FPLT were shifted down towards the lower keys so that the gap closes between those keys.
So I guess what I'm getting at is if I buy your LS, can I remove the pads you put and put my own pads? (do the pads come off, do you think?)
Please let me know asap if you do or don't want to sell it. I live in Canada, and I would like to avoid paying customs fees, so if I were to buy it, my uncle in Georgia could bring it for me on June 27 when he comes here. So I would need it to be shipped to GA (across the country) and I don't know how long that would take...

Thanks a bunch.

Hey, Christina...

That's a very good question you asked about the average pay for an Atlanta court reporter. I still am a student, but my understanding is that the average salary for a court reporter is around 70-90k. The job postings that I see start at aroun 50k, but when you consider experience and speed, realtime capabilities, full- or part-time hours, freelance or salaried, etc... You can make upwards of about 100k+ per year. Of course you know that you get your appearance fee, payment to do the job, plus the copies of the transcript you'll get paid to make, etc. It all adds up. I hope that helps you, even though I need to look into that further myself. I'll let you know when I get more information. Are you considering becoming a court reporter?

Congrats on being in the 200s! What an accomplishment. I will keep the Light Speed in mind over the next month or two, as I re-enter the field, and if it's still available, I may contact you. Best of luck in finishing school!

Work is slow, but picks up here and there and at least it's sort of steady now.
I have to laugh at your "forgetting to breathe." I remember those days well. You'll get it!

Maybe you won't want to do this, but I am on CaseCatalyst. I'm not too sharp on this, but does that eliminate you as a scopist for me because I'm not Digital Cat???? Thank you. YOu sell yourself well...good luck. OH, & P.S.: If you can't, can you recommend to me personally somebody who shares the same passion as you? Again, Thanks.

Hi Christina. I'll be glad to give you some insight into the market down here. It may be a culture shock from California. We're getting inundated (sp) with people moving here from CA. Anyway, it's not that busy here. I personally have been steady. I have a firm that I work for, but I have had to go outside and have my old firms and fellow reporters help me out with overflow. I think it was in '94 our legislation passed a tort reform law that really hurt us, especially the San Antonio area. It had to do with medmal. Proposition 12. That was 98% of my work, and I had one client that kept me plenty busy, and I did overflow for fill-in. The cases started running out about 2 years ago and we've been really hurting. Dallas and Houston are a bit more diversified. Back in '88 when workers' comp changed, it killed Dallas, and I had to move to Houston. I believe we will recover, but it'll take some time. When you get to town and are talking to firms about a job, don't hestitate to ask me about how they're known to treat their reporters. There are some to stay away from.
Don't go into shock, just remember the cost of living here is probably about 1/3 of CA. In SA our 0&1 rate is anywhere from 3.90 to 4.45 plus a per diem of $25 to $35/hr. And copies are 1/3 of that. Dallas and Houston do not offer per diems. There are some firms in SA that do not charge per diems, but will have a higher page rate. Also, be prepared to travel...a lot. Our border cities only have official reporters and so SA reporters are relied upon to go to places like Laredo, Eagle Pass, Del Rio, and everywhere in between, and Corpus Christi sometimes. Corpus has several reporting firms, but sometimes our SA clients would like us to drive down there. And also up to Austin, which isn't too bad if you live in SA. It's only 90 miles. It's a little farther for me because I actually live 50 miles NW of SA. So I'm a commuter. If I have failed to answer any of your questions, please email me or give me a call. I'll be glad to help you in any way I can with firm suggestions or places to go, which side of town you may want to stay on. I don't know if you're familiar with SA or not, but I'm here to help. My email is shannonlynncsr@aol.com, and feel free to call me also at 210/363-8951.
