Naola, I just read the answer to your CR-Net scopist color request. I meant to check on that myself yesterday, but never got to it. Never got to it along with many other items on my list!

I have an editing macro I created a few months ago that will scan directly to any edit made by a scopist so you don't have to page down and look for a color change. It is a two-step macro, but once you do the first two steps, you just have to Ctrl l to find the next. If you email me at jenlug@pacbell.net, I'll attach it for you. If you want it, that is!

Naola,
Would you mind sending me a sample invoice for your clients. I would like to start getting my own clients, and I have no idea what an invoice would look like. I do send my own invoices to my agency for myself.
I would really appreciate it.
Also, do you think it is too soon to get my own clients? I have only been reporting for six months.
Thank you,
Susan

Naola,

There is someone selling a LS right now for $2,200. Would I be better off buying a used one?
Also, have you had any issues with lawyers using your digital recorder or mic to record. I have heard of some reporters who have.
Can I set my keys on the LS for a harder touch?

Susan

Naola,

You have given me a great deal of information. Thank you so much. You are absolutely correct. I would have to give myself time to learn on the Mira or the LS, either way, I have to get use to a new writer. I also have a very bad habit of pounding on my student writer, which is causing me pain. I know for sure since the LS has such a light touch it will take me quite some time to get use to it, but you can adjust each key, correct?
As you have mentioned, the LS has no audio, no paper, no screen , -- I hook up to my laptop so that is not an issue for me -- and only two backups, but I just love the fact you are not having any pain in your hands. I think it might be worth the 15% restocking fee if I don't like it.
Also, do you have a mic hooked up to your laptop, since the LS does not have audio sync?

Thank you Naola.

Hi Naola,

I recently graduated from Long Island business Institute for Court Reporting, and I am really stuck on which professional writer to get. I have narrowed it down to the LS or the Mira. I need to make a decision right away. I have been on forums for months trying to learn all I can about the LS. You seem to really like it. How long did it take for you to get use to it? Are all the kinks out of the latest version? I just don't need any frustrations right now having just graduated.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Susan

It sounds like you have no reason to be scared off, Naola. You are one of the few who are happy right now. I just wanted to make sure I posted you to let you know a bad update might be part of a lot of people's problems.

That's why when I get my software working without any glitches I refuse to load a new update for years at a time. Same theory. If it ain't broke, I don't want it fixed. :)

I really want this writer to work. I just absolutely love the touch.

Naola,

Thanks for taking the time to post me.

The combo strokes you were having sound identical to what's happening to me, just not the same keys you were having problems with. It happens very uniformly.

If my advice means anything to you, I'd advise you against loading the last update. Many reporters who seemed happy before the last update seem to be having issues now.

I have an extremely light touch, so I think the LS is just incredible. Just don't know if I have the time and patience to work through all the major hurdles. Like you, I write RT every day, so having an ugly tran rate doesn't work for me either.

Thanks for letting me know about the Stylus. If I send back the LS, I might just hold on to my Mira until the perfect writer becomes available. I know you said there's not one out there, which I agree with, but I think I remember you having a Smartwriter, too.

Am I right about that??

Now that was the perfect writer for its day.

Thanks again for your time. I really do value your opinion.

I know I'll love the touch of the writer. I already do. I'm dying to be able to write on air. If you remember, I have a lot of the same ailments you do.

I have an extremely light touch anyway. Now with this writer I just seem to be petting it. Just don't know if I have the time and patience to work through major hurdles. Like you, I write RT every day, so having an ugly tran rate doesn't work for me either.

Has your LS ever combined two distinctly separate strokes??

I'm not talking about stacking.

Did you load the last software update??

Naola,

Would you post me on how you're doing with your Lightspeed??

Bought it this summer at the convention, and everybody seems so dissatisfied as of late. I'm thinking I should return it before I get attached. It's looking pretty in its box right now. :)

Thanks!

I guess I'm going to have to set up my equipment and play around with it. The thing is, I actually have DigitalCat software, so you would think I would have the least problems using THEIR software. I'll give it a shot. When you say, "use a different serial port," you do mean USB, right? That is what we use to connect the machine to our laptop, USB port? I've used it so little, and hadn't thought much about it till I realized I might actually have to go on a job here soon...as an aside, we have been a bit preoccupied here in northern California with fires. We are in the "state of emergency area" where we have been on "precautionary evacuation" notice for the past few weeks off and on. So everything else has been put on hold. Now I'm trying to get back to business. Thanks for your help.

Hi, Naola,
New questions about the LightSpeed. I used it on one job. Things have been oh, so slow here in California, but a friend of mine has been quite busy, so looks like I'm going to be working. So here goes. I remember when I used the machine on my one job, I had some problems. First off, I got all set up and it didn't recognize the port. I had to reboot just to get it to recognize the port. I didn't have it in the wrong port and I didn't have the wrong setting, but I had to reboot to get it to work. Have you run into that? Also, when you take a break, what do you do? Do you shut down your job on your laptop and restart it? I know with my other machines I could just leave everything open, take a break, come back and start writing, but I find that doesn't work with the LightSpeed. What's the magic trick so that I can do things flawlessly in a job and not have to reboot and have problems in a depo? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I am going to make this thing work. Thanks so much.

Hi, Naola,
Yes, I have had quite a bit of acupuncture, and love it. The only thing with acupuncture is, whenever I have it, whether it be for my neck, migraines, whatever, I'm only good for a few days, then I have to go back for me. I ran out and got a brace for my elbow, so we'll see how that works. Hopefully, switching machines will help, too. Thanks.

Okay.So I had just set them all at default, which I believe is 300? Something like that if I remember. I'm not in front of my machine. I'll take your suggestion, though, and start playing around with it. And while I have your attention, since you seem to be a world of knowledge (bless your heart), I have tennis elbow (OUCH!!!). I have not had pain in my elbow since school when I was studying like crazy, but I am now studying for captioning, so studying hard again. Any recommendations for tennis elbow? I'm about to head out the door to go get a brace right now.

Hi,Naola,
Problem solved. To answer your question, I am on DigitalCat software, so one would think I would have the least problems. The problem ended up being that it froze. I had to go to the LightSpeed Icon in the System Tray and "End Processes" and restart it. I'm not thrilled with that problem. Also, I must be resting my hands somewhere where I shouldn't be, because I see all kinds of strokes on my screen...and I don't think I'm resting my hands on the keys. So I guess I've got a lot to get used to. We'll just have to see how it goes. Any tips you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help.
