Bummer.  You'd think a few key words could be put in to filter out that type of blast.  Like hearing, motion, superior court.  No?

Hey Kelli, Can you add to our preference page whether we want to receive court-related hearing/trial/motions?

I don't work in court and would rather not fill my inbox with all these SOS e-mails for motions, etc.

Thanks.

Hi, Kelli.  I'm involved with my state association, and we have some steno-related items in our store.  Is it all right if I post about it and add a link?  If no, I understand.

Thanks!
Elsa

Kelli, I'm looking for the 'join' button for the OC and LA job postings.  I assume there is a different word or location I need to go to.  Please help.

Hi - Is there any way you can request that agencies put their name on their posts instead of just first names and phone numbers?  You never know who it is asking for help, and as you know, some people we just shouldn't work for ;0)

Thanks!

After the holidays sounds great!  I will be in touch about this then.  I'd really like to do it!

That's a wonderful offer, and it may work out.  Would a Saturday or a Sunday be out of the question?  Freelancers have such tricky schedules, yet I know you've got your husband to consider, and he may want his peace on the weekends.

Kelli, I've been trying all year to do a group training with a few other reporters, and it just hasn't worked out.  It wouldn't be out of the question for me to come to your place if we can work it out, but I do lots of training using the free Teamviewer program.

All you need to do is have a computer with Internet, your writer hooked up, and be either on a speakerphone or a phone with a headset so your hands are free.  I am able to control your computer.  Sometimes it's best to train that way, because then we can do one and a half hours on one day, take a break, and do another one and a half hours - or do the second hour and a half on another day, depending on how full your brain gets and how much time you have.   I am suggesting a full three hours if you want to learn new realtime macros, but the amount of time is totally up to you.

I charge $50 an hour teaching this way, and always get great results from my students.  It's amazing the things reporters don't know about their software - and completely understandable.  There's just so much to learn!  If you have some time this week, I'm pretty available.  Just email me directly at jenlug@pacbell.net.

Hi Kelly,

I am a Videographer and have recently expanded my business. I now have more jobs than I can do myself. How can I get a list of Vids in my area that I can contact and hire?

Thanks,

Matt

I'm unsure as to why I can't post on Transcription.  The page is blank.  I will fiddle with it more!  Thank you for your advice!

Hi Kelly:

I am a member of CSRNation.  I'm interested in international depos and am curious whether that is a separate group or subgroup from CSRNation, or is it one and the same?

Thanks,

I saw the post by the supposed reporter moving to Colorado and laughed.  Surely this is not a reporter.  More likely it's a foreign typist who wants to get into our field and wants to know what the Colorado transcript format looks like.  Maybe she got a nibble from a Colorado reporter.

On the opposite side of the street, picture the poor scopist (a friend of mine) who was contacted by a reporter, new to her, who had a 200-page transcript that needed rush scoping.  It was written in 5, which my friend doesn't have yet, so she sent it to me in the hope I could scope it.

No way, no how...the transcript was hopeless: abysmal tran rate, poor audio, no speaker IDs and no word list.  My guess is it's a new reporter who was sent a recording to work from; she wrote it in Eclipse while listening to the audio, at the same time having Eclipse make a .wav file so the text would sync.  I converted the file to 4 and sent it back to my friend so she could see what it looked like.  I told her it wasn't scopable.

Scopists are in a better position than reporters when it comes to people who are "harmful to your career."  We can simply send a job like this back to the reporter and tell her it's not workable.  Reporters have to try out a scopist first and be burned to know you don't ever want to use that person again.

We need to find a way clone the good reporters and scopists.  I know five reporters I would rank a 10 (you and Darcy among them).  I know there are more out there.  They're the seasoned, intelligent, diligent reporters who work at their craft and have high expectations of themselves.  I fear the newcomers lack the ambition and fortitude to become good reporters.  We live in a world of instant gratification, nothing like when you and I were learning the business and expected to work hard and long to build our skills and knowledge base.

Sigh.  I fear for trial and appellate courts.  My nightmare is an ER world (supposedly saving money for the court systems) churning out transcripts that are littered with (unintelligible) and the like that wind up being useless to the appellate courts.  By the time reality sets in, it will be too late to resurrect the field of court reporting.

Hi Kelli - I would like to make a post, but I'm not sure where to post it.  I am a reporter in Philadelphia, and we have a deposition scheduled in Los Angeles.  I don't know the going page rates there and want to be sure that I bill and pay the reporter fairly.  Any idea where I can post that?

You see the phantom owner syndrome everywhere, Kelli.  I think some people have good intentions, but then some other aspect in their life changes and they don't have the time they did.  Others buy a horse just to say "I have a horse,"  because it's a well-known fact that owning a horse is associated with having money (although that's so often not the case).  Yet other people buy too much horse, get scared of him/her, and leave the care up to the experience people at the stable.

Everything above aside, I don't know how a person can pay out board every month (and I'm sure it's much higher over on your side of the country) and not get anything out of it.  Having mine at home is time-consuming and back-breaking work sometimes, but there's nothing better than the smell of a warm horse on a cold morning.  By being able to share in your friend's horse, you're getting to enjoy and indulge in horses on your time -- a great arrangement to have.
