I have two computers. One of my computers is my go-to-depos computer. That computer is in a bag with its power cable and all the other equipment I take to my depos. I also have a Verizon MiFi in that bag and a digital recorder. I use the Marantz PMI 660 digital recorder. The audio is fabulous. I record audio on the digital record, on my computer and on my writer. You never know when you will have a failure so I have three backups.

Also, the day I buy a new computer I buy and extra power cord for that computer. You never know when those power cords will go out, so I keep the spare in my car.

At home I have another laptop computer. That computer can go to depos if my designated go-to-depos computer has to go in the shop. This way I never have to miss a job because of a broken computer.

My at-home/editing computer is connected to a full-size monitor. It is also connected to a full-size mouse and full-size keyboard.

My exhibits are scanned and searchable. I store them in dropbox and keep an iPad at my desk. I pull the exhibits up as needed and look at them on the iPad. Some folks use a separate monitor for this. It is much faster to look at the exhibits this way and search for words instead of going through paper documents, plus if the print is really small, you can expand and hopefully make out what the document says.

I do work at a desk. That is my preference. I like to be ergonomically correctly positioned.

Hope this helps someone.

Have you ever thought you lost a signed attorney order form? I have. So far I have always found them. This is my current practice I have so I do not have a panic moment.

Step 1) When I get home from the depo I scan the signed forms.

Step 2) I name the forms the date of the depo. 01.01.2019 AOF (AOF is atty order form).

Setp 3) I place the copy of the AOF in a folder on Dropbox that is only for these forms.

Janiece
Previously Marked Exhibitstag:csrnation.ning.com,2017-07-02:1736041:Topic:13567972017-07-02T18:24:02.523ZLindsay Pinkhamhttps://csrnation.ning.com/profile/LindsayPinkham582

It used to be that when attys would bring out a previously marked exh. (with the photocopied sticker or stamp bearing the previous witness's name and exh. number) and discuss it with the witness, at the end of the depo I would ask counsel if he wanted it attached for reference, along with the exhs marked in the current depo. And if he said yes, I would send it in to the agency requesting that they attach it, and in my index above the exh. descriptions I would just have a parenthetical, (The…

And if he said yes, I would send it in to the agency requesting that they attach it, and in my index above the exh. descriptions I would just have a parenthetical, (The following previously marked exhibits are attached hereto for reference: Exhibits 3, 15, 21, and 25.) Simple.

But lately I've noticed attys are not only bringing them out, but having me re-mark them (with the same number) as an exhibit to the current depo. So if I'm told to start with Exh. 25 in my depo, then they'll bring out Exhibit 5 and have me re-mark that one as Exhibit 5 to my current depo.

That's fine if there are just a few. But what if it's the case that you mark 30 new exhibits to your current depo, and they at one time or another touch on 30 other previously marked exhibits? That automatically doubles the time you spend on your index, because now you have to list and describe 60 documents instead of 30. And of course your descriptions may not be similar to the description the previous reporter created for her index. And there's the time copying out all the Bates numbers in each document.

I want to spend my time on the words in the transcript, not re-marking and re-describing exhibits that they already have in previous depos. Have any of you run into this disturbing trend? I'm thinking of tracking my time and billing agencies for it if I have to do this extra work that I consider above and beyond what I used to do.

This practice has also caused confusion at law firms. My agency recently got a call from opposing counsel wondering why there were gaps in the exhibit numbers - at first they accused me of losing them!

Today I discovered a new use that I really love. I am sitting here editing and I am going to have to make a run to the FedEx box later. My FedEx driver is prompt. I need to make sure I don't lose track of time and miss him/her. I thought, I wonder if I can ask Siri to remind me to go to the FedEx box at a certain time. I tried it and it works. Loving it!!! I am kind of new to smart phones so this may be an obvious one, but I liked it so much I thought I would share.
FedEx and UPS and courier servicetag:csrnation.ning.com,2016-04-01:1736041:Topic:13354782016-04-01T17:52:56.734ZJaniece Younghttps://csrnation.ning.com/profile/JanieceYYoung

I have recently set up my own accounts with UPS and FedEx. I had been taking packages to FedEx and UPS locations to have them shipped. That was a real time waster. I finally took the time to set up my own accounts. Now I can print my labels on the computer and simply drop the packages in the UPS or FedEx boxes. I don't know why I did not do this a long time ago.

I use the notebook to write the date of the deposition, the day of the week, the name of the witness, seating chart and spellings. I put my spelling questions down as I can or scan for them on breaks. I put them down how I think they are spelled and once I confirm the spelling I put a check mark.

I also write down their transcript and exhibit orders on this page.
