Hello, I have a small problem, As I was editing a job the file shut down and now when I try to open the file I get a message "The File's Extended Header is Invalid - Layout Stream Address"  This never happened before and I would hate to edit the job over as I was almost finished.  Has anyone experienced this problem and what to do to get into the job?  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks

  • Janiece Young

    What version are you on?

  • Roberta Caiola

I am running 13 in boot camp on a Mac for more than a year doing realtime and everything and not one problem until now.

  • Roberta Caiola

I opened the file in auto archive and it's there, at least I don't have to edit it over again, but I still can't open it in the case file.

  • Janiece Young

I went online to search for that error message.  I couldn't find anything.  I also searched help on my computer and didn't find anything.  If you have support you might check with them on Monday.  I have never heard of this error.  Now I am curious.

  • Roberta Caiola

Janiece, I did all of the same searching all morning and nothing.  I went on Facebook to the CC group and all I had to do was go to archive and the job is there, refreshed with all my edits, whew, what a relief and now I don't have to re-edit the job.  In my panic I didn't even think of the obvious.

  • Janiece Young

Oh, Roberta, we've all been there.  I better make sure I have auto-archive up and running.  Again, I want to know what this error is.  Strange.

  • Roberta Caiola

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I was cleaning the hard drive in the background, which I do once a week, but this has never happened before.  All I know is I have about 90 pages left and once I get this job done then I can play more with the file.  I have to say that after about 24 years of reporting, with all the changes from Xscribe to Premier Power and on and on I have never really had any glitches.  That's why I back up my jobs on two flash drives and another computer.  When all else fails at least I have the job to re-edit.

  • Janiece Young

Yes, Roberta, I am so glad to hear you say that.  When I first started reporting I had not backed up a job I was editing.  It was 150 pages of an expert, did go well, hard.  I had to edit over the whole thing b/c my hard drive went out.  Never again.  I back everything up on flash drives as I go.  I have mine on two computers too.

Glad this worked out okay for you.  :-)

  • Roberta Caiola

Thanks and have a great day!!

  • Janiece Young

    You too.

  • Roberta Caiola

I have a question.  I am switching to a new laptop Lenovo X230, I backed up and restored my dictionary and all includes, etc., that went well.  I backed up a case and when I tried to restore it on my X230 I got the message cannot open file, much be backed up in original CC software.  Just wondering if anyone experienced this, as I had no problems restoring my other files, this only happens when I try to restore a job or case file from my thumb drive and/or larger backup drive.  Any insight would help.  Thanks.

  • Cindy Clark

You have to restore it to your Case CATalyst user file, so "browse" to where you have stored Case, find the usr file, double click on it, and decide from there where you want to restore the files to.

  • Roberta Caiola

ok.  so I cannot just open CC and go to where my jobs and cases are and then hit restore.  That's how I always restored.  Thanks.  When I get home later I will try that.  I wanted to start using it but I need to transfer cases over.  Thank you so much and this site is such an invaluable tool for court reporters.

  • Cindy Clark

No, you should be able to do that too, as long as you're restoring to CC.

  • Roberta Caiola

Cindy, I am restoring to CC.  Whenever I buy new laptops I backup and restore, never a problem.  I didn't have a problem restoring my dictionary and all the basics, only when I backed up a case it gave me that message, it's very strange.  When I get home later I'll try what you suggested.  I restored my includes and system files directly in CC with no problem and I tried different means, a usb drive, my larger backup drive, to no avail.  Thanks.

  • Cindy Clark

Try your drive designation.  If CC is using, say, drive D, but your other computer was using drive C, that could be where the problem is.  I'm just guessing here, though.  When you open CC, in Manage jobs, click on File, then User Root Folders, and check to see what drive you are telling it to go to to find your user files.  Like I said, this is just a guess.

  • Roberta Caiola

    Okay.  Thanks.

  • Jill Moyle

You might try the CaseCatalyst Reporters and Users group on facebook.  There are certified trainers there that answer questions pretty quickly.

  • Cindy Clark

I agree, Jill.  I go to that group quite often to get answers!

I use serial cables for realtime, a multiline block for more than one attorney. I am finding with CC 12 that when I make edits from my writer during realtime the corrections are winding up in funny locations. If I replace steno with a word, it does not replace the steno. It may insert right after the steno. This is happening on the attorney's computer. On my computer everything works perfect. Anyone had this problem???

I just went keyless.  It's so nice not to worry about my key.  I wish I would have done it sooner.

  • Janiece Young

How do you get the seating chart to appear?

  • Janiece Young

I have a Stentura as my backup machine.  It does not make timestamps when I write to disk.  My normal practice will be to cable the information into my computer.  Will it make timestamps on the file on the computer?

  • Janiece Young

If I changed my Compression to 6, would that give me better quality sound? Also, my setting for Audio Input is set to default. Should it be "Microphone (Realtek High Def)? I use a high definition microphone that plugs into the mic jack.
    Thanks,
    Janiece

  • Janiece Young

I'm upgrading from serial cables to wireless connection with CC. I have my own router but am paying them for the Rapid Refresh so I can have wireless realtime. Anything I need to know?

  • Janet

Does anyone know if you can change the spacing of your steno notes in Manage Notes?  Thank you!

  • Janiece Young

Hi, Janet, if you expand the pane they are in, the notes get bigger.  Does that help?

  • Janet

Hi Janiece - How do I expand the pane?

  • Janiece Young

Open the file.  Hit Control N.  You will see the notes come up probably on the right side of the screen.  You hover your curser over the line and your it will give you the option to expand the pane.  I will try to take a screen shot.

  • Janiece Young

Sorry, for some reason it is not showing how your cursor changes to something different.  When you hover, your cursor changes to an arrow pointing left, two vertical lines, and an arrow pointing to the right.  You can then either make the notes bigger or smaller by left clicking and holding down your mouse.

  • Janet

I couldn't get the arrows.  I'm on version 14 if that helps.  Also, I just noticed when I went into Help and clicked on About Case Catalyst, I see a note there that says: the License file will expire in 83 days.  Do you know what that means?

  • Janiece Young

Are you opening the file with the transcript or just the file with the notes?

You might call Stengraph tomorrow to check about your license.  My understanding is that should update automatically if you are connected to the internet with your computer.

  • Janet

I went into Managed Notes and opened it from there.  I tried using CTRL N but that only opened a window saying Create New Document.  It's really not critical to change the spacing, I was just wondering if it could be done.  I just wanted to increase the spacing between the strokes so when I read back my practice takes I can write the word in English under my steno notes.  That's all I wanted it for.

  • Janet

I'm sure you're right on the auto renewal, but I'm going to contact Stenograph just to be sure.  I've only been on Case for 10 months and still in learning mode.

  • Janiece Young

Janet, you need to open an actual file that you wrote.  Then hit control N and you will see the notes come up.

I am a newbie using ICVnet.  I really like it.  There is one law firm I go to that I cannot use their internet system to route to my iPads.  Yesterday I tested using my cell phone at this particular law firm as a hotspot and it worked like a charm.  I think I will continue to take my router but hopefully when I can't get a law firm's internet to let me send to my iPads, I will just use my cell as my hot spot.  It's easy.

  • Tori Schafer

I have the CC edit version running on a 2009ish MacBook Pro.  I use Boot Camp with Windows 7.

PM me if you have any questions.

  • Cynthia Brostrom

I was spellchecking my job really fast and hit a key by mistake.  Now the word "that" has a red squiggly line under it throughout my whole transcript!!!  Does anyone know how to fix this?  I've already tried "undo" but that didn't fix it.  Thanks.

  • Janiece Young

    Hey, Cynthia,

Somehow you made your dictionary think that you are spelling that wrong.  Try d defining "that" and see if that fixes it.

  • Janiece Young

I am considering buying an HP Stream to use as a throw-down computer for RT.  I am using iCVnet for my RT and I could load CaseView on the HP Streams.  I have 2 iPads and one netbook.  The streams only cost $200 and I could get two of them for less than what it costs to buy one iPad.  I need to check with SG to make sure that the Windows operating system on the Streams would be sufficient.

  • Janiece Young

How do you use CC to put dropbox work units back together?

  • Janiece Young

I called Stenograph.  This is how you have CC software put your file back together for you.  Open the first work unit.  Go up to the File dropdown menu.  Look for multi-file append.  That is how you have the computer put your work units back together.

  • Tori Schafer

Does it keep the audio, Janiece?

  • Janiece Young

Yes.  You can associate the audio if need be.  It is much easier than putting it together manually

  • Tori Schafer

Nice.  I'll have to remember that.
