Hi, I just joined. I have been a reporter for over 20 years, the past 13 as an official in the Wisconsin state court system and I worked as a freelance reporter before that in Milwaukee. I began my career using BaronData as my computer system, which was later purchased by Stenograph. I am now on Case CATalyst 9.

Hello CaseCat users. Just joined this group and am really enjoying the info. I have an EZ Speaker question that was not able to be solved by tech support. Maybe some of you have a work-around. The problem come when I've defined an EZ Speaker using the Q. and A. symbols at the same time -- or the "THE COURT," sometimes I'll not catch every single letter. For example, I left out the initial W. It then came up as an untran. CaseCat stated "The software looks for every possible misstroke" -- as I have that option checked. Well, it missed this one! Their solution was to job define it. Yes, but there are others that come up too. On another stroke left out the final G -- UNTRAN! I really expect the software to do all the hard work for me on these types of issues. I asked if CaseCat could look at the programming and modify it but was told "It's looking for all the possible misstrokes." Has anyone else run across this problem? Any ideas?

    Hi!
This is probably a silly question and one I should know, but how difficult is for a scopist to scope for an Eclipse reporter on CaseCatalyst? I know there may be a few formatting issues, but what about audio? Does Eclipse have the same type of thing as audiosync on Case CAT? and if so, would the audio and text on the Eclipse file that is brought into CaseCAT work correctly?? I don't mean using MP3's, I mean would it stay linked together when the file is put into CaseCAT for editing?? Just curious.
    Thanks, Joan
  • Christi

Here's just a few answers to random comments:

1.) Case to Eclipse conversion is so much more work and mess than it is worth it. I would not even attempt. I'm not sure about audiosync, but formatting and other issues like that are a nightmare.

2.) EZ Keys are VERY old and outdated. They are NOT supported, nor do they work, on Vista AT ALL. Sorry! You'll need to learn to use macros instead.

3.) Although you've probably found the answer, word index is also known as concordance index. You'll create one, and then be able to print it.

Did I miss anything other than the untrans question? LOL
  • Julie Geraty

I have Case and just did an Eclipse file. It was my first time. The only issue we had was conflicts didn't show in my software. But the reporter called Eclipse support and they told her something to do to make it show in a different color for me in Case and that fixed it! It was over 300 pages, was an expidite and was on tapes! The reporter was very happy with my work and is sending me more files on a regular basis. She just added audiosync and we've got it worked out to send that separate. SO glad not to have to use tapes again, that sucked.

For sharing of audio files trying using a service like whale mail or swap drive to up load audio files to and for the scopist to download them. That makes the process so much easier.
  • Julie Geraty

I use Whalemail for the audio files. Very simple.

    I CAN'T GIVE UP MY SPACEBAR COMMANDS...I CAN'T, I CAN'T, I CAN'T :(
I'm holding onto them for dear life!!! I'll be upgrading my CC this week from Version 4!!! Hey, it works just fine for me! But they do have some pretty nifty upgrades, so I'm taking the plunge.

Now, I was told if I get a laptop with XP on it, I can still use my spacebar commands with version 9. True???

The alternative is get Vista and use keyboard maps, so I'll still use my spacebar commands but just without holding the spacebar down. Then when I want to type, I press back slash, start typing, then press back slash again and go back to my non-spacebar spacebar commands. True???
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Actually, Wendy, you can create macros to replace your EZ Keys/Spacebar commands. Macros won't interfere with the User Account Control in Vista which looks at EZ Keys as a keystroke recorder which is what hackers use to break into computers. On the Version 9 CD there are what's called Exceptional Extras and there is an Exceptional Extras Keyboard Map which has a whole bunch of the most commonly used macros submitted by reporters and trainers to Stenograph. You can break that EZ Keys habit, I know you can.

If you want, I have a handout on transitioning from EZ Keys to Macros. Just send me an e-mail addresss and I'll send it to you.
  • Wendy Moore

Does anyone have an include file for the caption pages? I've just upgraded from version 4 to version 10 and my include files aren't working with the fill-in fields.

I need some explanation on the Brief It feature in Catalyst. I did a long job last week, the words "municipal court" kept coming up, so I decided to brief M*K for it. Well, when I did, it translated the very first time. I've checked all my dictionaries and it's not there. Brief It is checked in options. Someone please explain this to my simple mind. This has happened a lot since the first of the year! I was blaming some of it on my scopist, now I think I need to apologize to her!
  • Christi

When you use Brief It, those briefs that you use go into your job dictionary. They are not carried over to other jobs, unless when you go to start a new job, you select the job dictionary for the previous job where you used Brief It. If you find briefs you want to use on a consistent basis, copy them over to your personal dictionary from that day's job dictionary. Or just plain enter them in your personal dictionary using the insert, CRTL-I. :) HTH!
  • Gina R. Gruben

Therein lies my confusion. Don't I have to define 'em at least once? And they're not in that job dictionary.
  • Gina R. Gruben

Okay, I did find it in the next day's dictionary, but I swear I didn't define it!
  • Christi

Once you use a suggested stroke from it, it automatically defines it in that job, thus making an entry go to the job dictionary. These are NOT put in your personal dictionary. :)
  • Gina R. Gruben

    thanks.
  • Roxanne

Hi everyone. I haven't been on CSr nation for months! Just had my first baby and scrambling to take the Nevada Exam May 9. Anyway, can anyone walk me through how to install my security key on my new laptop that has Vista? I can't figure it out anywhere and neither can my BFF who is a stenograph independent trainer and reporter, but she doesn't have vista and I'd REALLy like to avoid the $60 fee for a helpdesk call as my software free help has expired. Thanks anyone!!
  • Holly

Hi. Just joined the group and looking forward to learning from your collective wisdom. I loaded version 10.03 a week or two ago. The handout is a little thick but I'll look it over this weekend. I have to say the Brief It feature is nice.
  • Christine Kirley

Welcome, Holly. Yes, the Brief It feature is nice. I have used it a lot on jobs, and it's a stroke-saver for sure.
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Welcom to our new members of the Case CATalyst forum.
  • Michels Court Reporters

We just updated Catalyst after a long, long time of not using it...and let me just say, "what support???" (deep sigh)

If there's anyone in the So. Cal. area that can help us a little, can you give us a call at 818.346.1808. Thanks very much!!!
  • Rosalie DeLeonardis

Melissa, I've had to upload my notes from my machine, and if I remember correctly, it will not upload your actual timestamp. I think what you have to do is turn on your timestamps in your job and then set the time when you started your job. Hopefully somebody else will have more knowledge about this.
  • Shirley Riga

I've been watching the postings while I've been out of state and now that I'm back in CA, here's what I have to share. I used to be a Cast Cat trainer back in Massachusetts about three years ago, and I stopped training on Version 7. Melissa, if you want to share your email with me, I am willing to problem solve with you the timestamps, as I taught court reporters all this about 3 years ago, and I'm willing to brainstorm with you. Then if we get it right, you can post the solution on CSRnation. How about that? I'll be watching CSRnation for your reply.
  • Karl Immel

Hello, I'm brand new to this site and am not even close to being a court reporter, but I do enjoy my scoping business and if I can be of assistance to anyone, as far as editing, please let me know. Can't say I'll have the answer, but I will try to help. Besides, I'll probably need some help sometime, too.

Looking for some help with translation of numbers -- and I am certain
the CaseCat trainers will have some sage advice in this area. How can I cause numbers to tran correctly? I do not use the number bar. All written out. I have just been fixing all mistrans when editing (a huge waste of time, I know) but with LiveNote jobs that is not an option.

When writing large numbers, if the exact stroke is not in my dictionary it will tran like this: $5,002405 for $5,245. I have heard I should remove all numbers above 99. Is this the fix? If so, do I need to stoke an even number, i.e., $5,000, differently than when it is used in a number such as $5,245?

Any help from those of you who have mastered your numbers would be GREATLY appreciated.
