Christine, first of all the only things you should have in your dictionary are words for hundred, thousand, million, billion, trillion. Then, get rid of any defined number e.g. 5/HUPB = 500. And any numbers written via the keyboard should be numbers or words and none of them should be defined as conflicts. Now, to write a larde numbe such as $5,245 it should look like five/thou/two/hun/for/teu/faoeufrb/dlars. It's a lot of writing out, but your numbers will look fantastic. Finally, on your Case CATAlyst 9/10 CD you'll find the number conversion self-study guide which is a huge eye opener and will help you straighten out your number situation. If you can't find it, tell me what version you're on and I'll send it out to you via email.

    Anthony,
Thanks for your response. Am I uderstanding you correctly; do I delete defined numbers even for 1-100? Or delete just the numbers that are higher numbers?
And I have CaseCat version 10.04. I will check out the tutorial you suggested. Thanks.

    Jeanese,
The settings I have checked for real time are : squish defined numbers, automatic number conversion, and display 10 and under as words.

I really appreciate both of you taking time to respond to this issue. I have been wanting to resolve this for soooo long but not knowing how to go about it. Thanks a ton!!!
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

No, don't delete all of your numbers. If you have 1 - 100 defined separately e.g. wupb = one; two = two, etc. That's fine, that will work. I'm talking about where you have numbers like 5/hun = 500, 3/thou = 3,000. Those will interefere with the number conversion features in Case. So, if your write 3/thou/1hun, you would get 3,0001000 instead of 3,100.

Automatic number conversion converts numbers based on keywords and their associated rule. For example, eu/was/thr/on/maeu/two/#2ou7/apbd/waoe/phet, would translate to I was there on May 2, 2007, and we met...
or upbd/sefm/two/-f/-t/tpraouls would translate to: Under Section 2 of the Federal Rules...

That's how automatic number conversion works, you have a keyword, a rule, and an option.

Now, if there are entries in the automatic number conversion (ANC) file you don't want to use, then highlight the keyword, a dialog box opens, and in the first box type /// to make that keyword and associated rule inactive. I love the ANC in Case, it really makes life easy when writing numbers.

Also, your number conversion settings that are checked off in your translation options are good for both realtime and if you do a "normal" translation by reading on a file and translating it.

Also, if I didn't mention it earlier, create a new user to test your settings before you go "live" with them just to make sure you're comfortable with those settings and like the way they're converting your numbers. And back up your system files case.

    Anthony
Thanks for your explanation. I an setting up a test user and will begin deleting thousands of entries in a copy I have created of my personal dictionary. I will keep you posted....
    Thanks SO much!!

Blue Screen of Death. I was starting up realtime when I put in my RT cable into my USB and after a pause received the BSD telling me I had to shut off my computer and that my BIOS disks are full. I tried it again without incident. My techie says that Windows can be fluky and is running diagnostic tests. Any court reporting ideas?
    Thanks, Jeremy

    Anthony and Jeanese,
Just spent two hours with Sandy Starbuck (awesome CaseCatalyst trainer) and now have cleaned up my number translation!! I am so excited to see the numbers coming up as they should. A little refining is still necessary, but I'm ready for LiveNote accountant testimony this week. Woo-hoo!! Thanks for your help.

Now for some Number Conversion file refining: Question: Do you have a list of words that you assign "digit after" to? I.e., page, line, column? I am really looking forward to having the software do all the work instead me editing it later. Or any other great tricks regarding that file. I just modified the "Roman Numeral" rule so that it translates "Roman Numeral II." This is great stuff!! Why didn't I do this sooner? I feel like a newbie!!

Looking forward to some great translations.....
  • Jeremy Frank

Christine, thanks for your response. I'm new to CSRNation, I know to next time start a new thread.
One question, I'm assuming your advice regarding choosing one's user is if one is already in Catalyst. In my case I was on the main desktop. So the larger question is, should this happen while in a job, is there a way to back it up within Catalyst after choosing the user.
    Thanks, Jeremy

    Christine, et al,

In my Automatic Number Conversion file I have the following:
For these, I use digit after cap with number

    Section
    Rule
    Precinct
    Highway
    Interstate
    Route
    County route
    Rural route
    Town route

    Plaintiff’s exhibit
    Plaintiff’s exhibit No.
    Plaintiff’s exhibit number
    Plaintiffs’ exhibit
    Plaintiffs’ exhibit No.
    Plaintiff’s exhibit number
    Defendant’s exhibit
    Defendant’s exhibit No.
    Defendant’s exhibit number
    Defendants’ exhibit
    Defendants’ exhibit No.
    Defendants’ exhibit number
    Deposition exhibit
    Deposition exhibit No.
    Deposition exhibit number
    Government’s exhibit
    Government’s exhibit No.
    Government’s exhibit number
    State’s exhibit
    State’s exhibit No.
    State’s exhibit No.

    The rule for the above entries is {DIGITAFTER}{CAPWITHNUM}
(All of these entries should be entered as lower case.)

    Letters with Numbers
    Example A-19, B-12, C-13

Enter into number conversion file as
    A-, B-, et cetera

The rule for letters and numbers is {DIGITAFTER}{NO_SPACE}{CAPWITHNUM

Best of luck to you! Glad things worked out.
  • Christine Kirley

    Anthony,
Thanks SO MUCH. Really appreciate your help :)
  • Christine Kirley

    Jeremy,
To back something up in CaseCat, you highlight the file, hit Ctrl B and choose where you want to back it up to. You can back up to a flash drive every time you edit or finish working. Not sure if this answers the question.

When dealing with a "crash" though, by choosing "user," I was referring to when you are not in CaseCat. It's the screen that pops up after you have chosen "Safe Mode with Networking" and the bios files finish loading. The screen will say on the left side "Administrator" and on the right will be your name and designated icon . This is the screen I was referring to. Many times the mouse is frozen at this point and you just need to power off and start up again.

When you have a crash or problem, take a picture of it. This has helped me. I will take a picture with my iPhone and send it to my computer tech. He can direct me from there.
The error codes and information displayed will help in trouble-shooting.

    Hope this helps...
  • Jeremy Frank

    Thanks again, Christine.
My techie advised me to e-mail him the .dmp file that Windows creates.
    Jeremy
  • Christine Kirley

    Jeremy,
    Perfect.
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Hi Jeanese, put you CATalyst CD in your computer, and you should see on the left side the CaseView II icon to load it onto your computer or the attorney's computer. You can also copy the contents of your CD to a jump drive and load it onto an attorney's computer from there.

I do it all the time, when an attorney needs it.
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Virginia, make sure you have your Case CATalyst 4 Realtime Commands Job Dictionary selected. Sometimes when you upgrade your software, these things can have a habit of unchecking themselves.
  • Laura Boyd

    Anthony,

Would that explain a text file I was scoping where the * for "delete previous stroke" was visible in reporter's steno column, but in the translated text all strokes intended to be deleted were still there? (This was fairly soon after v.10 was released. )

If so, do you know of anything I could have done after the fact, in Edit, to accomplish that Realtime Translate function, i.e., activate the * ?

    Thanks for your thoughts,
    Laura
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Laura, it could be that the * (asterisk) is not defined in the reporter's dictionary for "delete previous stroke." What they need to do is define that stoke in their dictionary - personal and Case CATalyst 4 Realtime Commands Dictionary.

There's also in the reporter's read settings where the * is set for deleting the previous stroke. The only thing you could have done is retranslate the reporter's notes.

    Hope this answers your question.
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Actually, yes, there's a * defined the Case CATalyst 4 Realtime Commands Dictionary.
  • Laura Boyd

    Anthony,

Thanks for clarifying for me. I'm fairly sure the reporter didn't have * defined within her own dictionary bur would have been using the Realtime Commands dict. May I ask, from Edit, and without having access to the reporter's dict, but with making many J-defines and other globals, how might I have re-translated the reporter's file rather than "Apply Globals" process?

    Thanks,
    Laura
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

You would have to go to tran and edit and retranslate the job that way. Unless I'm reading what you just posted incorrectly, that's the course of action I would take.
  • Laura Boyd

    Anthony,

Yes, that's what I was asking. You confirmed it. In the scoping version of CC I'm not allowed to Tran & Edit, only Edit. In my Student software I could do what you described, only it's limited to 50 pages and not to be used commercially in any case.

I can use globals to effect a "search and replace" type of function of a textfile. But the function where a dictionary is applied to the written steno to read/tran, that's only allowed in Student or Reporter versions.

Oh, well, it was just a wish! Thanks for your helpful explanations. I really appreciate it.

    Laura
  • Saniya C. Youngblood

Hello Anthony, I attend long Island Business Institue. I went to your excellent seminar you hosted in Brooklyn, back in November. My sister who is a working reporter came along with me.
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Hey Saniya, great to hear from you. How's everything going?
  • Saniya C. Youngblood

Hi Anthony, everthing is going great, I am finishing up the last speed class, I just passed my 200 Q and A. I need nine more test I cannot wait to finish.
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Go into your layout, heather. And on the right side of the screen you'll see where you can click the blue arrows. Click the arrows twice to the second page of layout options and at the bottom of that second page you'll see where you can make a box around all of your transcript pages including for your include files.
  • Kathleen O'Connor

Thanks. I will try that next time.
  • Susan A. Zielie, RMR, FCRR

Is anyone having trouble with CC recognizing their button? My key fob is fairly new. I've switched computers recently, but was having the same problem on my last cmptr. The button is driving me absolutely crazy!!! Hasn't happened yet, but I'm afraid one of these days I'm not going to be able to hook up RT. But not being able to access edit is bad enough. What the heck is going on? Any ideas?
  • Kathleen O'Connor

Lately, when I double click on CC it gets hosed sometimes. Is that what you are experiencing?
  • Penny Pabitzky

I know what you mean. I have that scary feeling that one day I'm going to set up for a job and it won't work! Mine does that randomly on both of my computers with both the full key and the edit key. Never know when or why.
  • Kathleen O'Connor

I haven't updated case catalyst recently. I keep clicking on remind me later. I am wondering if that is the reason.
  • Christine Kirley

In the past when I had this happen, the button holder failed, and you need to purchase a new one. You can always call support and they can give you access codes to open your file. If you have support, let them know what is going on.
  • Allan Dyer

The Blue button holder is in two parts. The button holder and the three inch long extension cable. If the problem is the extension cable then remove the three inch long extension cable and just use the button holder. Or buy a new button holder from Stenograph.
  • Vesna Walter

    F4, then Ctrl f5
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Try F4 then F6. That will uncap the next word. Oh an
d I hope you mean capital when referring to an upper case letter. :)
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Oops. Wrong number. F4 then F5.
  • Vesna Walter

You create an ASCII and then attach that in the email. I don't know about the Error 3 -- that's weird!
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

I'd contact Stenograph about the Exception 3 error. Also, you can made a PDF of your transcript and e-mail it that way. PDFs are also safer and more secure than the traditional ASCII file. Just go to Print and select Stenograph PDF printer.
  • Christine Kirley

    Jeanese,
Go into your personal dictionary and find the first letter you want to modify. Click into the definition field. Hit Alt F and choose Glue. That should be right before each letter. It will look like {Glue}A for the letter A. Change the rest of your N
    alphabet this same way.
  • Christine Kirley

Correction: ignore that N (texting in a phone -- argh)

also for your date you can set up a few different things. I have a macro stroke that I launch after I have written the date that puts the forward slashes in. You can also usesome number trigger commands as well
  • Christine Kirley

Yes, I write DA*IT anytime up to six lines after the numbers for the date are written. it doesn't have to be immediately after. I'm not sure what commands are attached to it, cuz Sandy Starbuck programmed it for me. Tech support would most likely know. Sorry I can't help on that one. I have one for time figures too : TAO*EUM.

    Anthony may know -- Anthony???
  • Janiece Young

    Jeanese,
I have a macro that puts the dashes inbetween the letters when they spell it out when you're in Realtime mode. I also have one that will put dashes at the end of a Question/Answer and at the beginning of a Question/Answer when they interrupt. I have one that will delete a word also.
If you want them, just let me know.
    Janiece
  • Janiece Young

    Jeanese,
I don't know how to send you the files?
    I have them ready.
    Janiece

  • Ashley

    Hey everyone-
Someone made the following suggestion to me: For QA, add a * to the symbol to invert the previous symbol. That is, Question* puts a ? on the answer before it and starts a Q, and *Answer puts a period on the question before it and starts an A.

He is using Eclipse. Having used Eclipse at school for a few months, I know how to create such a dictionary define but am not sure how to do it in Case. Does anyone know how to do it? Is it as simple as just defining . and ?? I know that CaseCat gets a little funky with their format symbols so I wasnt sure.
  • Debra Flamer

Ashley: I sent a friend request because I wanted to see if anyone commented on how to use the Q and A bank and asterisk for inverted previous symbol...how to Case-Catalyst format it, that is. Thanks.
  • Keith Rowan II

Ashley, that is a darn good suggestion (all the way back on Oct. 17 - I just read it now, haha). I think I am going to try that! I love those sneaky time-savers!

I am assuming you got the how-to part resolved?
  • Heidi J. Ryder

I need a consistently reliable way of hooking up attys to realtime. Anybody having any luck? I can hook up at one job, next job doesn't work. I use cables.
  • Trudi O'Brien

Hi, My name is Trudi and I am here in Morro Bay, California. I just bought a new Diamante and got CaseCAT to go with it. I am having major issues with the writer communicating with my software. If anyone has a Diamante and has had similar problems I would love the help. I have been on the phone with technical support for several hours now. And it is Friday. Thank you in advance.
  • Janiece Young

    TIMESTAMP QUESTION:
I am covering a job tomorrow for an agency and it is a videotape. They want timestamps only when the question begins and when the answer begins. I don't show that as an option in my "modify format" screen. is this even possible?
    Thanks,
    Janiece
  • Shirley Riga

I'm still pissed about yesterday's encounter with plaintiff's attorney and I wanted to see if anyone has had this experience. I am a case cat user and I write directly to my laptop with my writer. I have audio sync and I was doing a doctor's depo so I always use it. it was defendant's depo and once we got on the record the plaintiff's atty interrupted and asked the other atty if she noticed a recording of the depo. she said no, so he turned to me and said please turn off the audio? I said what?? He said again please turn off the audio. I explained to him it's part of my software and it's used in the production of the transcript. He said that's fine and turn it off. I have the capability of turning it off through my writer, so I did and told him so. I was so mad. After the arguments started, little did he know I turned it on again. My God! I'm responsible for this freakin' record! Plus it was a contentious doc depo! Has this every happened to anyone???
  • Vesna Walter

I had an attorney tell me once that he doesn't like it when reporters record audio. Other than that, no. If he specifically told me to turn it off, I would. I don't think you're allowed to record people without their permission. But I do agree that it's annoying!
