I actually asked Keith about this one because I hadn't encountered it before, but what I think he's basically saying is that most of our defines are with brackets, but the _ is basically a command that's embedded within our system -- probably the metadictionary. So with that said, I think the way it should be defined would be {^}__{^}. I'm not sure if you can tell or not, but the line that's between the two bracket commands is actually two underscores. The carrots surrounded by brackets is saying to delete a space on the left and the right. Try this out and see if that works.
