Hey Kim, nice to meet you!!! Looks like you are close to being done in school! Congratulations!!! I've been in and out of school for about 10 years. Took some loooooooooooooong breaks in there, but I'm back and hoping to wrap it up soon! :)

How long has it taken you to get to where you are in speed?
  • Rich Germosen

    Hi, Kim.

    Glad you like the website.

I'm in North Brunswick. Where did you used to live in Jersey?
  • Gretchen

Funny you were just in New Olreans. I went to Philadelphia and Delaware after Xmas and am going back in a couple weeks. It's cold enough here though so I hope it warms up some when I get there.
  • S. Arielle

Congrats on passing your tests.....ahhhh the pressure!!! It's a good feeling though when you pass those tests. I love court reporting. I think you have to love it. it's not an easy field, but it's very rewarding.

I'm breeding my female in 6 months, so if your husband is interested I'll let you know.....so in about 8-9 months puppies will be available. They are awesome.

Whitehall is right here. it's so nice to know there's reporters close by.....maybe we can hang out for coffee and chitchat
  • Michele Kohar

Congratulations on passing your tests. Keep up the good work and I'm sure you'll do well in May

    Thanks so much!

You can email and talk with them. They don't pay much, but the 'experience' has really helped me now that I am doing CR work. My dictionary is bigger; I understand mumbling people better and accents better; working with Case easier than students right out of school. I was gettting 80 cents per audio minute. Peanuts, but I am happy I did it. rho
  • S. Arielle

LOL LOL No, they don't drool...I know a lot of people think that, but no. They do shed but the hairs are short. One dog you wouldn't notice as much but since we have 4, it's noticeable, but they are only on the main floor. The bad part is we have mahogony wood floors all throughout the main floor except the kitchen so you notice it. So we have to vacuum every day.On light floors you wouldn't notice it.
They are very easy to train. They are the most lovable dogs around.

Hi! Is your family going crazy with all that traffic in Baton Rouge now? It's insane there. We were glad to get away...not that I don't love the southern part of the state, but still!
I can't wait to get started with Simply Steno. I'm hoping to start in March/April. Where were you wpm-wise when you started, if you don't mind my asking? I'd love some first hand student knowledge of how you like the program!

    Robin
  • Robin L.

Hi! I'm very familiar with Satsuma. We lived in Denham Springs. In fact, we still own our house there, against our will, lol. Is your brother a developer?
I'm working on the Realtime/Realwrite theory thru Penn Foster, which is basically working completely on your own. They just supply the materials. I've heard great things about Klingsbury. I may get his book after I finish my theory for some shorter writing help. I just need to get this theory done period!

It sounds like you're going to be in great shape in May. Have you already taken the written portion?

    Robin
  • Carol Holmes

Hey Kim.... I never answered your question from forever ago, but yes, I too am in Simply Steno...and I love !!!!

I have heard of Mark's theory, but haven't checked it out. I've heard a lot of good things about it though!!
  • Robin L.

Congrats on your pass! You're almost there. I can't wait to be where you are. The theory I'm taking is basically the same foundation as Marc's, as far as I know. He's just more thorough in the "write short" techniques. My theory is just the basics. It's up to me to develop it from there. There are quite a few briefs, but then again they have you 3 stroking some pretty common words, which is why I was considering supplementing with Marc's book. Did you just purchase the book and CD's and do it on your own?
  • Tracie Donnell

Hi Kim! I'm really excited about starting with Simply Steno, but I'm very nervous, too. I'd love to hear from you about the pros and cons you found once you got going in the program. I'm supposed to start Monday:)
  • Breck Record

    Kim,
I've been on Eclipse since '91 and really like what it's done for me. I don't want to get into commenting on other programs. Eclipse has done what I've needed it to do for me in all areas of what I use it for.
I would suggest that you contact Candis Bradshaw or Cindi Hartman for comments on Case and see about what others have to say about their programs.
    Hope that helps,
  • Tracie Donnell

I'm fresh out of theory and starting at 60 wpm. I'm lucky because I'm doing this full-time and don't have to hold down a job, plus my kids are grown and gone so I don't have to deal with all that. I'm really hoping to be ready for the RPR in May of '09. Yes, Marc is changing his program. Since I haven't taken any of his tests, I'm not going to be able to compare. But you are right--some tests are easy, some are hard. You just have to slog through and get 'er done.
  • Sue @ The Brief Zone

Hey Kim ! It's so nice to match the name to the face...so glad you were happy with your order ! We have RPR Prep drills that are geared specifically to get you ready for the RPR speed tests, and we also have U.S. States, Capitals & Major U.S. Cities in Brief Drill format, but at this time the site is unfortunately under construction. We're very excited to let you know we are implementing a new download delivery method to enable you to receive your drilling material instantly ! plus no more shipping charges ! As soon as the site is up and running, I will definitely drop you a line...our estimate is March 10 for the new site....sorry for this delay, but I really think it will be worth the wait !
  • Sue @ The Brief Zone

Great, Kim. Talk again soon, Sue.
  • Veronica

Hey Kim! Yes! I did join, but haven't started yet...Marc is probably wondering what I am waiting for. I am in my current school, but haven't gone for the past few days. It is too much! Feeling discouraged at the moment. Anyway thanks for taking the time to message me! I appreciate it.
  • Breck Record

    Kim,
I would suggest calling Eclipse Support and see what they say. You should be able to print up to about 40 or 50 pages with no problems with the Student version. They do have a limit on the file sizes so that reporters can trick the system. I don't know why else it would be causing you this problem. The only other thing I could think of is that maybe your printer drivers might need to be installed again????
    Hope that helps,
  • Dale

    Hi Kim:
I just use my StenturaSRT200 with a laptop, and supply a serial port OUT of the laptop, and the audio video guy does the rest, so, I really don't know what his set up is,, kind of like a record (or CD) recording studio, those geeks have their own geekware!
So, where are you from, and how long have you been doing this steno gig ?
    stay in touch
    Dale
  • Dale

Hi Kim:Happy Saturday morning to you!
When I am doing the church/captioning, only those that are within "eyeshot" of the large-screen TV can see it,, I suppose someone with eagle vision across the auditorium could see it and read it,, but that would be a bit disruptive to the good Pastor speaking the speak, so to speak (LOL).
Anyway, you are a few years ahead of me in the steno world, and I want to pass the state requirements soon, and then the RPR next.
I may ask you some questions from time to time if you don't mind.
    thanks again
    Dale
  • Dale

    Kim:
question: You passed one leg of your state exam, yes? Does Pennsylvania use 225 wpm as a standard,, as most of the other states? We have JC, Lit, and Q & A, at 225, 5 mins each, for our state exam. You can pass one at a time, and you can take a year to pass the ones you don't get right away.
    Just wondering,,,,thanks
    Dale Lardie
  • Dale

    Kim:
So, you're doing the federal version of a state exam ( rpr). I wasn't aware that PA didn't have a certification process, like Florida does not. Michigan has 3 segments, at 225 wpm. I'm not sure what Ohio and some of the other states have. I think CA has ONE 20 minute Q & A at 180 wpm.
Anyway, thanks, and good luck getting those last few speed traps....I need some luck also...take care
    Dale
  • Sue @ The Brief Zone

Hi Kim ! I know, I'm sooo sorry, but the new site is taking forever it seems....what type of hardcopy are you interested in? I'd be happy to e-mail you....Sue.
  • Debbie Watson

Hi, Kim! Good luck with your schooling -- sounds like a lot of fun! Thank you for your compliments. I have not been able to devote much time to music just in the last little bit, and now I'm sick :( but plan on getting back to it hopefully next week as soon as this congestion goes away. Singing makes me happier than anything else! I have been reporting 20 years -- Yikes! Where does the time go. Anyway, good luck with everything. Take care and keep in touch. Oh, by the way, where is Whitehall in relation to Philly? My sister lives in Cherry Hill NJ and sometimes works in Philly as well.
    Blessings, debbie watson
  • Dale

    Hi Kim:
Hey, I just got new puter speakers, and wanted to hear your music selections here that you put on.. I love the second one a lot! Who is the artist?
Hey, have a great weekend and God Bless YOU!

Your boys are beautiful! They look like triplets!

I certainly need to get some pictures up. Hahahaha, no, I'm not in any of the ballet pictures, just in my fantasies!
  • Dale

    Hi Kimmy!
Hey, on my way out the door, 9 a.m. Sunday. I take down the good Pastor's message (one hour, twenty mins) as part of my practice with steno. He starts out over 200, for about 15 mins, then calms down to around 140 or so, where I feel more comfortable. Words like Nebuchadnezzar require more strokes, etc. or I use my special briefs for those, lol.. Our language is something else, isn't it? But we have better tools than in the past, with better theory and short-stroke combinations.
Have a wonderful sunday with your family. It will be 67 degrees here in southeastern Michigan today, going to enjoy it BIGTIME.
    bye bye
    Dale and company
  • Dale

    Hi Kimmz:
Well, I do this: When the answer appears to be worded correctly, which takes a moment, because they could say "Um, . . ." first, but if they don't, I steno/type "same" (in steno), meaning to me, that the answer is the reverse of the question. Sometimes, I have steno/typed "ditto" to designate the same thing. Its tricky, though, because they could say "Um" or "Well", then you insert that word first, then "ditto". Its important to get something in advance, so you just do it automatically, and then, conversely, be able to read it back as such. I have a list of phrases that I have developed that took three months to remand to memory.
    I hope this helps.
    take care
    Dale
  • Dale

    Hi Kim:
Hey, just so you know, I am not at the faster rates that you established stenos are used to operating at, but most of the way there.
At our school, and using their theory, which I have had to modify to get to the speed that I'm at now (150 or so), they have not stressed the software, unlike another school nearby that DOES. So, my software refinements and choices have not all been made. Steno seems to be a truly chameleon-like business in the constant improving and sharing of knowledge and technique. I can see from the more-experienced stenos out there that the theory of the l970s, for example, has gone the largest overhaul of all, leading to the "leaner" theories, and short-stroke theories of today.
Anyway, glad to see your message on here, and keep up the good work.
take care and God Bless you
    Dale

    Hell0 Kim-
I see where u used to be in Louisiana many yrs ago. I recently moved to Bossier City. Anywho, just wanted to say hi...its nice to meet others on here. You have a nice-looking family.

I've used StenoCAT for eight years now. I've been on six different CATs during the last 28 years. I've always looking for perfection and cost.

Yes, StenoCAT will compete with the best of them and the initial get-in price is quite inexpensive. The annual renewal includes all updates and support at the same price, 649 per year. You can't go wrong. Have your good times as a new reporter. I remember those times vividly. Don't get discouraged as you're learning in your first couple of years. There is still a lot to learn. I'm in my 49th year and still love it.... and still learning.

    Hi,
How goes life after PCRA? I am planning on attending Anita's seminar in Chicago and am so looking forward to it. Did you take the RPR this month? What is WKT?
    Hope your doing well.

    Hi,
Good news about the interning, how do you like it so far? I am willing to wager you passed the lit though I am sure waiting for the results is murder, at least it would be for me since I tend to not be patient when I want to know something. What material did you use for studing for the WKT? I have been thinking about taking it this coming fall if I can afford it. I am fairly certain I have enough material but now I need to make myself study it. I think I am going to have to come up with a daily planner and made myself stick to it. I have not had many problems with DigitalCat, though I am far from a expert and would like to go to one of their seminars on how to use it better. I need to make myself get more comfortable with it since I am going to Anita's seminar. I know I have the CD from SimplySteno on using it but sometimes having a person there showing you how to use it makes a big difference. I do have the workbook for CaseCatlyst (sp) wonder if I should try to do the exercises in there using DigitalCat; guess it couldn't hurt!
    Have a good day.
  • jayne

I thought I would try and add some photos of the munchkins. I personally perfer to take the pictures rather than being in them! Right now the youngest one is being a royal B****, she is graduation the 6th of this month and then going back to stay with her father and so she is in her I don't have to listen to you mood.
I haven't finished the vocab or English from StimplySteno and I haven't received the medical or legal terminology material yet. I do have Monette Benoit's books for the written knowledge test, a series of four books and also a couple books from NCRA for the written test. I am in Pittsburgh so I am almost positive they should have a testing site here.
DigitalCat is only 35.00 for students and I believe that includes six months after you get out of school. I know Marc has a cd for it which you can get and SimplySteno qualifies for the student rate. I believe it is a full program, not a student version. You might want to speak to Marc about it.
How did you find a firm to intern with? Did Marc help you with it?

    have a good evening
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

Hey, Kim. First off, having boys is a blessing and a day-to-day test of my patience. But, they're great kids and my life has been made fuller with them here.

I'm chair of the New York State CRA mentoring program. Having a mentor is an important part of any student's life -- too bad there aren't enough people willing to be a mentor. Let me just get something straight. You graduated court reporting school and are going for your RPR? Well, it's great that you're going for the RPR right out of school. I did the same thing and having it really sets yourself apart from someone without it. As far as Eclipse goes, I'm a Case CATalyst user, but it is a very useful program and I would say to stick with it and get in touch with an Eclipse trainer. Perhaps he/she can explain things to you or show you an easier way to do things within the program that will make life easier. I know an Elipse rep by the name of Mike Starkman who is based out of Philadelphia. He runs online training and telephone training. You can contact him at mrstark@comcast.net. Good luck on your future work as a court reporter and I'll look for your name in the JCR when you pass the RPR. Good luck!!!
  • Anthony D. Frisolone

It's me again. As far as switching from Eclipse to Digitalcat -- a program I don't know anything about -- you'd have to find out from yourself. But everyone I know loves Eclipse and loves all the features it has. For realtime especially it makes a mediocre writer an excellent one with its conflict resolution abilities. Eclipse also has the ability to translate words that are not even in your dictionary. I would be patient and stick with Eclipse personally.
