Like what kind of improvements? What are your favorites? I actually use a scopist 90% of the time. As long as it's not shutting down in Realtime, I guess it would be worth the try.
Marla,
I want to thank you for the invitations you have extended to me to join in on the socal reporter outings. I would definitely take you up on that, but I live in Florida now. My heart will always be in California.
The only tip I have for you is to go out and do it. That's the only way to learn the software. I think it is fairly intuitive especially if you are somewhat computer savvy, which I think you are. You'll find that many of the shortcuts that you use in Word or Excel you can use in Eclipse, things like CTRL-X to cut and CTRL-V to paste.
Remember you have support. And for $600/yr, feel free to call them up for any questions on how to format or anything. They will help you. Also, feel free to give me a call at any time.
I'm looking forward to the NCRA convention in Anaheim this year. Eclipse usually has a couple of training sessions the first day or so. I plan on signing up for one of those.
We should have a little SoCal social on one of the free nights during the convention.
I'm thinking if the SoCal social is during the NCRA convention, we should just have it at Downtown Disney somewhere like the Uva Bar.
If you it's just a general OC Social, then maybe Irvine Spectrum. They've got a ton of places. I know they have a Yardhouse for the alcoholics. There's a Dave & Busters. There's PF Chang's. There's CPK. So whatever.
The Italy-Greece cruise will be my second for continuing education. Did one to Mexico last September. Had 26 reporters and about 80 of their friends and family members. In addition to the Italy cruise, we'll be doing one to the eastern Caribbean in March of '09. Let me know if you or any of your friends are interested.
Feel free to pummel away with questions. I may not always be able to get back to you by your deadline, but I'll do my best. In return, I'd like your permission to use your questions in my seminars as real-world examples of problems reporters encounter. I won't mention your name, of course, and I'll change any names in the sentences, if you haven't already, to protect the guilty.
Thanks for setting up the SushiDan meeting. It was great to see you. You had a terrific turnout considering the weather. I can't wait for the next one, especially since it might be closer to my neck of the woods.:))
Hi Marla! If you can make the next outing in OC on the 2nd or 3rd weekend of March, I can help by arriving early, set-up, whatever. I'll just be out of town the 1st and last weekend of the month. The 4th weekend is Easter weekend...
Just read your thread on Eclipse punc. I'm on Procat. Just like you, I use no number conversion and write EXACTLY what I want it to look like on paper. If it's a number, I hit a number; if it's a word, I hit a word.
I hit DLA*RZ after my # stroke, and it puts it through the numbers to the beginning. I think you can probably do it in Eclipse, too, without having number conversion on. I really would be shocked if it is not a feature. You could obviously do it in Stenocat and I can do it on Procat. If you can't on Eclipse, I sure would suggest it to them to get that as an added feature.
I plan to switch over to Eclipse in the future, so I'm glad you posted the thread.
Marla, would it be okay to share your brief sheet from Excel that you posted to a national court reporter students group I moderate? I think they would love them and the layout of the sheet.
By the way I just love your photos! I didn't know you knew the Geico gecko, LOL that one is too funny! Rho
Thanks Marla,
You have some great compositions yourself! No 'formal' training...small seminars and LOTS of books over the years. Started in '84 w/my DS's birth, lol. I 'dabble' publicly....www.rhodagraphs.com but CR takes most of my time. The next two weeks are slow at our firm, so hope to have a chance to get out. I have a shoot the 8th and 9th at a pregancy crisis center for teens/young women and will be doing babies/etc. They will use them for their marketing campaigns if they like them! That Monday I also go to a seminar...so will be home late and then have to get up to do the 1st day of shooting, lol. I am SO excited about it tho! Is a nice place that I like what they do/etc. Plus, I was in that 'situation' when I was 17, so know how hard the choices are for these girls.
Actually I've missed the Long Beach one. Doh!!! You had it in Long Beach right after I moved out. Timing is everything. I won't hold my breath for Taipei.
Hello, I wanted to stop by and thank you for adding me as a friend. I need positive people around me that understand me so I got on this site to surround myself by people in the court reporting, captioning fields etc.
oh, thank you. That's my wife Joy and my daugher Kayley.
I don't know of NCRA testings being provided at any of their seminars. I registered for the May exam Online, and I did not see the options for taking their exams during seminars, only options for the scheduled exam dates at the sites listed -- none related to seminars though.
Thank you, they keep me busy, that's why I need this Court Reporting so we can do much more. I am at 180 QandA, but I feel like I am losing speed. I just turned in a 160 Jury I hope like heck that I get it.
Aayding is a trip he does sooo many things that at the time when you are mad or sad he can always make you laugh.
I live in Fairfield, Ohio in the Butler County area. To sit in with a reporter would be great and that is something I need to get on. Because at the beginning of our classes for the semester they asked that we get a mentor from somewhere in the OCRA so I do need to get to know some reporters. I have never even been to a convention yet. You guys look like you have so much fun.
Do you ever misstroke being a reporter or get nervous are you like an RMR, or RPR or anything? Do you like the court room or do you like doing only freelance? Would you ever consider doing the congressional hearings? Because I don't know what I want to put my hands in yet, but I know it does have to do with court reporting. I love it, it is soooo challenging therefore I feel it is something that I need to master.
Man everything sounds so wonderful. Thank you for elaborating, it isn't a problem to take up half a screen; Court Reporting entails a lot, but it is much needed information. Hopefully one of these days I will get to come to Columbus and check out your reporters. I don't have a job right now, and I have been looking for one. After I get a job I will be able to go to Columbus and sit in with. I will keep you posted.
Hey there, I am starting to pass the tests again. Iguess I just hit a dry spell with them for a while and now I am passing. The 160 Jury that I told you about, I passed it, and I have test marathon this week and so we get a test every ten minutes. So I am going to take advantage of that. Everything is starting to sound slow that I thought was sooo fast.
I'm taking votes now for where the next one should be. Downtown LA at The Standard Hotel again? Maybe somewhere in the Valley? I want to have one down in San Diego sometime this spring. Maybe a Palm Springs spa weekend this fall?? Let me know!
Aww, thanks for the compliment on Miss Sophie. It's always a delicate balance, how much personal information to post online. She's actually seven years old now, but I do love that old puppy pic. And the problem is, she's so friendly, she would probably willingly go with anyone who tried to snatch her. I think she'd miss us eventually, but there's no such thing as a stranger--only friends she hasn't met yet. :P
Anyway, our dog is rarely left unattended, so everybody else will just have to get their *own* Border Terrier. ;)
Well-well, Ms. Marla:
Hi! How are you? You're very popular on this site. I usually ask first and then click to request friendship. This time I clicked first...now, I ask. I'm helping a lot of students over the country calm their nerves and raise their egos and confidence about themselves and I love it. Now, I'm quite interested in the SoCal CSR outings. Come to my site and read all about me; click at the bottom to read more or visit my friends and see all the advice I've given them. I write long diatribes so I hate to re-do anything. I see your CSR number and realize you're just a baby (smile); but I'd like to get to know more of my colleagues. I'm gonna be at the Anaheim Convention, the national NCRA one. I've never been. I'm just going for the comraderie and free booths, etc. I have reservations for all 4 days and am gonna work from there at the time. Before I go on, I'll wait to see if you've accepted me first; because I might be wasting your time, huh? (Smile) Until I hear from you, Peace out.
Hi Marla,
Yes I am a student working on my 180s and I would like to be on your brief list. My email address is jayne_187@yahoo.com.
I was reading your bio,I live in Pittsburgh and have visited Columbus a few times, in fact I found a neat antique store there where I felt in love with one of their couches. I also will be heading to LA on the 26th of this month for eight days of fun and pleasure. Is there anything besides Disney which is a must to see? I will be attending a library conference with friends who are librarians.
Have a good day,
jayne
Thanks, Paulina. I'm so glad you not only came but had a good time. These SoCal CSR Outings wouldn't exist if people didn't come, so thanks for coming. Hope to see you at the next one. Not sure if I mentioned it, but I was thinking of a Palm Springs spa weekend getaway. Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions at all for future outings.
Hi, Marla! That was sure a lot of fun at Ruth's Chris! These photos were taken early on -- it got much more crowded as the hours passed. I stayed till 9:30 or so, and the hours in between I could barely step away from the bar -- really! I wasn't even drinking! (LOL) I remember not being able to even SEE through all the people standing around me. It was nice to meet those of you who were "first-timers" to this event, and always great to see those familiar faces too! I was thrilled to see everyone come up from San Diego. THAT's who held me hostage at the bar, I swear!
So glad you had fun, Audrey. I did too. I couldn't believe people were still there at 10:00 p.m.! It's just plain ol' fun hanging out with other reporters, isn't it? I hope you can make it to the next one. You're always such a lovely addition to these outings.
