Actually that was the day an owner of a court reporting school here in KS and OK came out to the courthouse and took pictures of me to use in her commercials, so I put one up. I had taken a boot camp there to pass my RPR and she kept in touch.
Maybe you should take pictures of yourself at all your depos. Maybe it'll be motivation to look better.
I completely agree with you and you are opening my eyes to a cool idea to implement on this site (sorta like digg.com, stumbleupon.com.. etc)
We need a social way to "digg" or mark threads we like, the more we "digg" the more it climbs up.
I am sadly working on lunching my new site so I dont have time available for a serious upgrade like this one.
I seriously would love to implement it though.
thanks for the comments on reporting, Kyung. I didn't know that people left reporting because they thought they'd have more interaction! I work for a district court judge and am his paralegal, but I also hold a certificate in electronic monitoring, so I do know that you spend a lot of time "behind the scenes". People think because I work for a judge, I get to see all the action and that everyday in the courtroom is like Boston Legal - nothing could be further from the truth! LOL! In fact, as you know, it's either feast or famine - we've spent the last three weeks with everything settling and every trial went off - so I took 2 weeks vacation -- I'll go back and be up to my ears in work - for a week or so -- then, I'll be back to transcribing, research or doing my tape logs!
thanks for all your help - I always look for your posts - you always bring a smile to my face because you are so grounded! Happy New Year, by the way!
Hi Kyung! Merry Christmas!
I got stuck with that nasty cold bug for a week and a half and am now burning the midnight oil trying to catch up. Take your Vit. C!
How's your holidays going?
Yes, my hoildays were wonderful! Visiting my niece and "great niece" in Las Vegas. I'm sure I'll have new photos to post in a few days. I am now getting ready to dog-sit a friend's 90-pound Boxer until Jan 4th! Wish me luck! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas! Start the countdown for the New Year!
I forgot to comment -- I LOVE your new emotes! I found the "Asian" ones on another site (Boxer related .. go figure), and I just think they're so cute! Wish they had one showing half-Asian emotes! ha ha Is your daughter "hapa"? I'm starting up a hapa blog in the coming weeks for the half-Asians in the world! I'll let ya know when that's up and running (in all my spare time)! ha!
Yes, the Boxer, Stanley, will be staying at my house till Sunday. I will let you know when my "hapa" blog is moving forward. Maybe the time your daughter is old enough to be on the internet, I'll have it up and ready for viewing! HA!
Hey, Happy New Year! I haven't been on here in a while. I have lots going on and haven't been able to get on here. It's a boy! I go for my next u/s on Thursday, so we're excited to see the little one again. How are you doing? How's work out there? Slow for me out here. I went to CA for two weeks just get some work.
Hi, Kyung. Is your name pronounced Kye- (as in dye) Yung, or is it Kye-Yoong? Even though I'm not speaking with your audibly, I'd just like to know. Hope that's okay.
Thank you for your kind comment about my niece Ada. She's a honey - and so hyperactive and intelligent.
Mira and Eclipse. Kyung, I'm 54 years old and started court reporting back before computers. I learnt Pitman at school and only got up to 120 wpm. I then ran away from home at 16, lived with a lovely Canadian guy for two years and of course got pregnant and had my one and only daughter, the beautiful Rachel (will post a picture of her later). She's now 34 years old and not a day goes by that I don't thank God for her. She's wonderful. After Rachel was born, mum and dad asked me whether I'd like to come home with her so that I could 'study' or 'get educated' to enable me to support Rachel as well as I possibly could. That's when I went back to business college, polished up my typing - 80 wpm on manual typewriter - and got my shorthand back up to 120. Managed to get a job in the South Australian public service as a steno secretary and within 12 months was tested for and accepted as trainee court reporter. With 12 others, I had to learn the steno machine in six months, after which I was thrown in, sink or swim, to report the South Australian Supreme Court, Local and District - oh poop, this is going to go on forever, and you just asked about the Mira and Eclipse re sound conventions. I'll send you my reporting history, if you'd like to see it.
I've got the facility to record on my Mira but I've never used it. I prefer to adiosync the videographer's audio via cable into my Eclipse (with deposition work). When I'm reporting seminars and small (audience of 500 or so) conventions, I use my Olympus to record audio and later, for checking purposes, play it back through Express Scribe software, using my footpedal and headphones.
Federal Parliament of Australia is the equivalent of your Congress. I must have loved it to have stayed there for 20 years. Did many wonderful jobs there - one for Koffi Anan when he addressed our Foreign Affairs Committee. Another CAT writer/editor and I wrote and scoped for each other and transcribed and lightly edited his one-hour address and returned it to him within 35 minutes, while he was having tea/coffee with the members. He asked us whether we'd like a job with him, as he'd never had such service before (he was probably joking, but that meant a lot to me). I finally left Federal Hansard and went freelance four months ago because I was the last high-speed CAT reporter/editor left; Hansard now employs twice as many editors as when I joined them 20 years ago. They are all (without shorthand and use voice recognition and are recruited from our universities. I was told I was no longer allowed to work differently, even if it was more efficient. It's a long sad story, and it now looks as though the future is very limited for Federal Hansard editors, as the huge majority of their committee work has now been outsourced due to the inefficiency and costliness of doing it in house. I've actually been doing some of that work on a freelance basis since I've left. If you find all this interesting, I'll write more. Deb
Happy New Year. Hope all is well. No, I'm not working in court this week. I know e-mails went out on Wednesday for help today, but I wasn't available for today. I've been out of town and just got back yesterday. I've only taken that one job. The transcript turned out ok, but I had problems sending it in. But eventually I turned it in. Are you working this week? I know depos are slow.
Happy New Years! Yes, we did have a great holidays, and I hope you all did too! I wish you and your family lots of love, peace and prosperity for this new year. Change is in the air! ;o)
:) Thanks. My two at home are 20 and 17. 17 yo has special needs, but he's darned independent these days! I vividly remember the days of having two in grade school, a toddler, and an infant while still working -- taking more work than I do now, probably, because I wasn't dependent on my clients only!
Dang! I'm too old to even think about that anymore! LOL
Thanks for inviting me. Great idea. I definitely could use tips on the juggling act. I get so caught up in getting those transcripts out, I forget about having fun with Jay. I try to do "movie night" on Fridays, but that hasn't happened in a while. Weekdays take care of themselves because she has so much homework, there's no time for fun. I look forward to reading the mommie tips. Thanks again.
Unfortunately, no :( I've been getting crumbs. Why? Know of someone needing help?? I worked in court last Monday and had 2 depos but nothing this week.
Hey, Kyung. Thanks for the reminder to do an invitation on here for the SoCal CSR Outing. Forgot all about that. Tell me how the invite looks once you get it.
I agree about the commute. One other thing, though. What happens at the end of March since it is only a temporary assignment? I can't take a chance giving up my spot with the agencies that I'm already barely getting work from.
I'm doing greattt! You might know that you do not have to be certified to work in Florida at allll! I just wanna do it so I have opportunities nationwide.
Some ppl don't even graduate.... and find a job.
=\
did u find the csr test hard?
what do most ppl do after 200, do they stay in school until they get their csr?
Hi Kyung! It's been a couple weeks since I've been out here. I actually have been staying busy this month. I was actually looking forward to having a little down time to do taxes, office admin stuff, but I'm still just working -- working a lot! (Not complaining!) Glad to have it! (haha) How 'bout you? Staying busy? I always enjoyt your photos!
The Boxer day care was a blast! I miss having three around; it's a little too quiet with just two. Really! And, yes, the background on my page is from a photo I took in Whistler of the snow on the branches. I need to think of one for the month of February. Have no clue where to begin. My creativity is at a standstill. :-[
I may try to make it for the CSR Outing. I have a full week, so I may opt to not drive to LA on Saturday. I'll see how things go. I'll check in with you if I decide to go. I'm happy to swing by and pick you up on the way if I end up deciding to make the drive. I joined a photography group last weekend, and we shot photos at the Salton Sea and Salvation Mountain. Maybe something in those shots will make my February background (??) hmmm.
I'm working! I have been working all this week. Thankfully nothing has ordered! Hopefully it gets better =\.
I sat in for a few months with different reporters. It is mandatory for graduation.
The certification chase... well the schedule has changed for school. I can go to class once a week. I think I'm better off staying home and practicing on my own. You know what I mean? I need to be disciplined!!!
Oh wow. I'm so sorry. I didn't see your comment till now! I am going to South Coast in Orange. I finally passed a 130Q and my 140Lit so I'm finally on a roll. Have to see a new goal!!
I did have a good time and got a great pep talk from Grace, got on with a few more agencies; so hopefully things will pick up. I'm pumped and ready to work 5 days if need be and what happens? Power cord dies on computer and battery is dead. This is my back up. Next day delivery for new cord is "on or b/4 2/12," crazy. I'm trying Fryes to see if I can get one while waiting.
That's ok about the form. I had the right one just didn't know who was supposed to get it. They offer no help, don't know if I'll do anymore jobs in federal, too much of a hassle for $35.70.
