Keith, I'm going to use most of your city briefs as I'm in Boulder Creek. Are you going to West Valley? You're so wise to be learning some of Mark K's theory. I'm adding bits of it myself.
This is a great site with tons of info for student and experienced reporter. For "experienced" feel free to substitute "old!"
West Valley is a great school. I took my RPR and CRR exams there. My sister and brother attended for a while. They are merit reporters too. We've had a tiny, tiny firm together for the last ... I guess John got his CSR and Certificate of Merit in 1983! So that's a lot of years. My sister is April Floyd on this site. Linda Lawson is a wonderful woman!
I've been trying to free up some time to go down to WV to give a little talk. My friend Elise Nock - also on this site - spoke a few weeks ago. Were you there??? She does CART work as well as depos.
So have you been incorporating your endings on the same stroke? VOET, VOETS, VOETD, VOERT, VOEGT??? That's the way I do it. Luckily for me, that's how I was taught in school way back when! And if you can't read that, let me know!
Keith, I'm just sitting here at my Mom's in Fremont, reading the Enquirer. Really! You're around the same speed Monica Gerard from this site is at. She's been pushing herself like you wouldn't believe, and really making progress. She has several posts if you do a search and also good advice from other reporters on her page. She's an older student, and has excellent work habits. She's also a musician - so she knows what practice is all about.
And it's not spying or anything to pop around to people's pages. We're all here to learn from one another. If someone doesn't want strangers looking at their page, they have the option to make it private.
It's good to mix up your regular practice routine by trying some techniques out that have worked for others. You can always go back to your old ways - or you may not want to!
Elise is so busy - I've been trying to get in touch with her for weeks!!!
I think I'll go bug her again now!
Hello Keith,
I am the administrator of the site, i randomly feature members sometimes.
getting featured doesn't really mean much, I can un-feature you you if it bothers you.
Thanks.
Yes, it's unfortunately closed. It truly was a remarkable program -- especially when I was there, '78-'80. When they lost the director of directors, Louise Gurich, the doors kind of fell off, but it was still a good program until close to its end, which I think was somewhere in the 90s.
West Valley is public, right?? Sounds like it's a good one, too.
My son went to Cypress, a J.C. in Orange County, and it puts out some incredible reporters. When my son took the CA CSR in the fall of '08, there were two students who took it from the school. One had five errors and the other six. (I really think they passed one and two in the State, but my son hates to hear me say that.)
Coincidentally, the director of Cypress, Carolee Freer, was mentored by Louise Gurich.
Anyway, I do feel so lucky.
I just read Monti's post about you being featured. I think that's really cool. I didn't even know he did that.
Thanks for the add, Keith! And thanks for allowing me to post your brief info on my blog, Steno Nerd! I'll post it sometime this week!
That's so awesome that your significant other is an official court reporter! Man, you got lucky! Hehehe. My boyfriend jokes with me and tells me that once I'm certified, he's going to go into court reporting school so he too can MAKE THE BIG BUCKS!!! Hehehe. But he's not -- he's a great web developer and budding computer programmer already. We're going to have a great life together (like we do right now) once we get married... which is AFTER CERTIFICATION!!! Gotta finish ASAP!!! :D
Did you always want to be a court reporter? Or did your lady inspire you to be a court reporter, too? I'd love to know your steno nerd story.
Yeah, I think there's something definitely wrong with my page that won't allow music to play. I've tried several other songs besides Joss Stone's, and I just don't know what's wrong. Any suggestions?
How's school BTW? I just found out I passed my 160 Lit! WOO HOO! The error limit is 12, I marked 10 wrong, but my teacher only found 8! I'm so excited! I think I may have passed my Jury Charge too. I'll most likely find out tomorrow. If I did pass my JC, then I'm 2 for 3, and I only need to get rid of my Testimony! Which I hate! Hehehe. It's my bane! :p Therefore, I'm devoting the last 2 weeks of school to learning and putting into lifetime memory new Q&A briefs. Would you happen to have any good ones? :)
Seriously, Keith! Such great info! And I like your little snide remarks in your Excel sheets... hahaha! Too funny! Man, I'm so going to use study your briefs like crazy! Seriously, thanks for being so nice to share all that info! May all the blessings come right back to you!
Thanks also for the tip on the music for my page. I'll try and fix it later, though. Not too big on my priority list. But when I do get around to it, could you suggest a website where I can get free MP3 downloads of songs, so it'll work for me?
Wow! Your school is stricter 'cause you guys have 4-voice. I think we start 4-voice at 180 or 200 WPM. It must take a longer time to pass through speed levels at your school 'cause of the 4-voice, but at least you know you all are REALLY READY for the real world! No pain no gain, right?
BTW, I found out that I DID pass my 160 Jury Charge! So I just gotta work on my Testimony now... which I will with your briefs!
Thanks for the congrats on my passed Jury Charge! :) I wouldn't mind being the glad recipient of your Jury Charge briefs, though... I wouldn't mind at all! ;)
You're gonna for sure get out of 180 soon, I know it! We just gotta be diligent over our summer break too. I'm planning on studying HARD EVERY DAY... plus I'm going to sit-out with a handful of different court reporters! :) It'll be fun. I need 5 hours total, but I'm going to go beyond that just to see all the different kind of work out there... just waiting for us! :)
Thanks for the info on the music thing... gotta do that still...
Keith, bad news! I didn't pass it this time. I was over by 27 errors. I'm going to work my tail off and get it October 16th, the next test opportunity.
Thanks for thinking of me.
I've been sitting in in court this week. I LOVE it! The day goes by so quickly.
I will be back to the office this monday. Give me a call(713-837-6595) at your earliest convenience and I will look into your problem. Hopefully we will ge to the bottom of it and see why the videos are not working.
1. Sharing your Jury Charge briefs
2. Creating "Keith's Flash Cards" on flashcardmachine.com.
Isn't that site wonderful? It's a really great resource!
I'm sorry you didn't see my blog post about flashcardmachine.com earlier. I'm gonna work on my blog right now to somehow include the "Top Posts," so the frequented blog posts are easy to see and access.

That's the great thing about this site. You can search for stuff, and find diamonds!

I'm so glad I did because I love your mantra. It made my day!
Maybe that's why I never want to retire. I know I'll never have it perfect. :)
