Hey Chicky Mama! Got your message. I am moving on to speed. Actually can't wait. Ready to be done with the whole thing! You up to 80 yet? I've been playing catch up all quarter since I got put back in late and still struggling with speed. Be glad to just have that to focus on next quarter. I'm ready for it!
hey! I'm like hunkering down - we only have one week left of this semester - so you know how that goes! How's your life and school?! I don't know about you, but I'm ready for a few days off!
Hey Jill! Yep - I'm enjoying the week!! Woo hooo! No bein up at 4:30 to do steno and living in my cave of a bedroom in the evenings - my friends all know I'm alive now.
Trip was good. Not much to do on that little island, I must say, but relax & get tan, which is Exactly what we did. It was cool though cause my GF & I got to catch up, since we don't see each other enough...and eat good food. Hope your summer is going well
Bonjour, mon ami! How are classes going? There are two 80/100 classes and you have been exiled to our class and your friends are in the other class! (I think! Some of my friends wound up there, too!) Oh, well, we will make it fun!
Hey, Jill. It was nice chatting with you. I'm not sure if you got my last response, but I'm heading out to make dinner and didn't want you to think I was being unfriendly :) See you around the board!
Haven't talked to my friend in a while, so thought I'd stop by to show you some love :) How's school going? I am STILL not on a good practice schedule yet...haven't been for umm...2 months though, so what's new?! ha ha I really need to apply myself more and I'd be doing much better! UGHHH. Hope you're doing well and had a good weekend.
And a Smiling friend at that! That was the osterich park in Aruba. My girlfriend Swears he stopped, looked at the camera & smiled. We laughed So Hard! Having a good summer?
Well, Jill, what makes a good reporter? I guess some days we are "gooder" than others. I think attitude is everything in life. Every day as a reporter is like walking into a dark closet. You just don't know what to expect. Will the attorneys be friendly or will they treat me like a piece of furniture? Mostly they are nice and friendly. So a positive attitude really does help to make a good reporter. Not to mention, practice, practice, practice! Good Luck in school. Ihope you get out very soon! Linda
That is really good that you do everything from home! Can I ask what speed you are up too? Just trying to get a feel for where I should be at once I get started and down the line. Thanks Jill!
Yep, I actually start on the 25th of August. Pretty exciting!!!!!! I have the books and my steno writer so I started by myself already since I took court reporting about 15 years ago, or so. I think I am aging myself now, he he!
Hi, Jill,
I haven't been a student for 25 years so I am not sure about how the job situation and being a student works these days. It would be great if you could do something court reporting related, though. Some of the large agencies used to get students to proof their reporters' work. Sometimes the students were paid and sometimes it was for the benefit of the students to get experience in proofing.
Good luck with your training. After 25 years, I can't think of anything else I would rather make a living doing. The flexibility of freelancing is awesome. I raised my two daughters as a single mom for 15 years and this was the perfect job for that. Now that they are grown, I have the flexibility of traveling and enjoying life with my new husband! Hang in there!!
wHeRE iN The wORld IS JiLL? You aren't in our class - did you get in another class with Brittany or, HEAVENS TO MERGATROID - did you promote! I sure hope you did!!!!! You'd better still be in school - holler at me! and let me know how the job thing is going! Miss ya!
Jill!! What's up?! I saw your mssg to Jeannie while I was writing to her and I just wanted to see how you are doing! Are you still at CRID? I love your page!! Write back when you can, okay? Have a happy Thanksgiving!!
That's cool. I think voice-writing is the way to go, Jill. With this economy and all that's going on in our state courthouses, all the guvna's are looking for a way to cut costs. And it looks like cutting the machine stenographers out of the budget is the way they're gonna do it!! Stay in touch OK? It was great to hear from you!!
HEY GIRL! I finally, finally logged in- what a nasty semester this was for me! How oare you! Did you go to stenomask? I saw Sharon's comment and wondered - holler back and let me know! Did you have a great Christmas?! Aww....you're probably in the Gulf with a margarita if I know you! BTW, will you be going to midyear in NOLA - my favorite city on earth (and I've been to a few) - I'm thinking on it.....
Hey, so I saw on someone else's page that you are going to go stenomask - is that true? Are you going to leave CRID anyway - did you take a job doing that at the courthouse? Inquiring minds want to know!
Well, what do you know! Good luck to you with that voice writing. You'll have to let me know about it - I'm completely unfamiliar. And what in the heck is an independent court researcher? What do you do? It's probably something that one of our clerks do - we have one who is dedicated to making copies, and looking through older tapes/cd's for what the attorneys want. Let me know and I'm happy for you.
Jill what's up?! Good to see ya!! How's everything goin?? Where ru going to be next month? I'm still pluggin away at CRID ==just passed my first 120 this week! Yay! Only took me two quarters to do it! LOL
Stay in touch, okay?
Way-to-go Jill!~ Heard lots of good things about voicewriting..good security, good income! I hope it brings all the best for you and your family.
I can't wait to start working too!!! I'm starting my search now..so far so good!
How's that cute little doggie of yours doing?
How in the world are you?! How's school? What's that like? Are you enjoying your new job? I haven't been on the baord in such a long time -- sorry I didn't reply sooner -- I'm still at CRID, still writing -- eventually, I'll get out of school - still love it!
Wow, Jill! That was quick -- you'll be working in no time! So, do voicewriters have a lot of work in Louisiana? NM doesn't allow them as officials -- and I don't know what Texas does!
Oh, I'm still working on my 100's -- Frankly, so much has been going on in my personal life and I had a few months of a school crisis - was really upset with CRID about some things, but, with help from an awful lot of people on this board, I was able to work through a lot of it and I'm going to stay (especially since, if I don't get cold feet, I'm moving to Dallas this summer). I still really like school and just need to get over that hump --
Sorry that job didn't work out - you know, a few years ago I left the legal field and determined that no matter what, I never want to work in another field if I don't have to -- so, I really hope you find a firm to work for!
Jill, there's a lot of court reporting agencies in D.C., and if you ever decide to make the move up here, I would be happy to provide you some names of good companies, where you might be able to get your foot in the door.
I think I gained the best experience working in-house for a busy court reporting company, learning from seasoned veterans in the industry. Being in the trenches with others helped me gain the skills set I needed to be a proficient transcriptionist. It was exactly what I needed to move forward.
Hi, Jill. When I was producing transcripts from stenomask reporters, I was transcribing two-channel standard cassette audiotapes, actually typing the transcript word for word on a computer with a QWERTY keyboard.
Today, the stenomask industry has advanced to using CAT voice recognition software, and then their transcripts are scoped. I don't do that, but I have a few friends who have invested in the voice recognition software. Years ago, it cost almost $10,000. I'm sure it's come down in price today. You have to develop your own dictionary to make it effective.
Check out this website for speech recognition software that some stenotypists use: Speechtek
There will be an upcoming Stenomask Convention in August at Opryland in Nashville, August 26-29, 2009. You should go and network with other stenomaskers. I think you may really enjoy it. Also, check out the stenomask forum: NVRA Forum
We are EXTREMELY busy here in Lafayette. I guess you're in the New Orleans area?? Yes, they are mostly machine.
Around here most are mask writers. I started out on the machine (school) and didn't want to stay in school 7 years (like the norm).
Actually, I've only lived here a few months, and I haven't done any work in the Plano area. I am starting to get some work but none so close to home yet!
Well, you look tan, happy and relaxed in your photo! You always have a good time!
Congratulations for you - what specialty is your attorney? Where you living? When's your exam?
I changed schools to College of Court Reporting and I'm happy as a clam and doing really well - much better! Quit my job, sold my house, sending my son to university - moving to Lubbock, Texas tomorrow - I'm the happiest I've been in 11 years - no kidding! Can you see me doing my Snoopy dance?!!!!!
hey girl. what's up in your world? you done with the voice class yet? i haven't done a thing in forever, but i'm dipping my toe back in the pool. just trying to decide if i want to start on the machine again or do the voice. say hello when you get a chance. talk at you later. p.s. i may steal your haircut!
