Hi, Keith. My sister actually lives in Buckhannon!! I am a certified court reporter currently practicing in WV. I'm a mask reporter now. I'm taking Huntington Junior College's online steno classes to learn steno because I think it'll help me in the long run. It'll make transcript preparation time less, and it'll allow me to become realtime also. I use Stenoscribe now with voice recognition, but it is so unpredictable and I don't think I'd ever be able to do realtime this way. I think eventually everyone will need to be realtime to stay competitive. I have a friend who lives in Elkins who is also a mask reporter and taking Huntington Junior College's steno classes. I guess we just like to torture ourselves! LOL.
Hi, Keith. I hadn't used my machine for the better part of a decade; so I am currently rebuilding speed. The concept of writing short was not one I had heard of until a few weeks ago. I decided now is the logical time for me to be tweaking my theory. I have noticed that you are a large presence in the brief discussions. Any interest in mentoring?
I am going to begin with a handful of the word endings that were not in my original theory (-SK/-MP/-RCH/-NCH). I am a little concerned about -NJ because there are quite a few conflicts. How do you handle that ending? The resulting conflicts?
Thank you, Keith. It doesn't matter to me that you are a student. Most teachers didn't make it to 180, and many people who write faster don't know as much about writing short. You seem to be a student/tutor of short writing, and that is what I need.
I picked up -FK, -FRP, and -FRPBLG from one of your earlier discussions. These are going well.
In school I was taught -NJ as "_ _ _ _ n" and back for final "j." Do not try to figure this one out, Keith, as your head may explode. I will now write -ng and -nj the same.
My -rf and -rve were handled by my theory. I just adopted FRPB for both -rch and -rsh with very few conflicts.
Your reference to "straining" indicates you add your -ing onto words ending in "n." What rules do you apply there?
I went back and looked at your briefing manifesto, and noticed you use YO/YA/YI (without the R). I can't imagine why I learned them with an "R" except that I only learned ~remember/~recall/~know as endings, and remember and recall have naturally occuring "R"s; so it may have been added for consistency. Again, this may cause one's head to explode. I also noticed the AO for "I do." I would still appreciate a couple examples of "do" and "do nots."
I guess this didn't turn out to be such a quick question after all.
Thanks, Keith. It's a lot to process. Right now I am documenting, evaluating, and prioritizing the changes I intend to make. Then I will add them in little chunks. I would really appreciate a list. I just want to make sure everything I do now will be in synch with the final plan. I'm not using -TD or -SZ combinations; so I have had to alter some of the phrase endings you and others are using, but I have come up with comfortable forms that work for me.
LOL. Thanks for the comment/s.Theodore says hello back to you as well! (: That is so awesome to hear about Tami. I met her at the NCRA conference with another student who absolutely loves her advice as well. Looks like you will be right up there with her at 280 soon, the rate you're going! That's great!
Thanks again for the flash card link. I had both old theory briefs and new phrases in Excel, and it was so easy to upload them. When my new software arrives next week, I will use the flash cards to write all my new phrases into my dictionary. I have my daughter on it now reviewing addition/subtraction/multiplication tables. She starts third grade in nine days. These are so much better than the Barbie flash cards that the dog chewed up!
Keith,
I really like your flsh crds for objections,
I use SKW for objection. and then the grounds
on the right side.
Objection. Asked and answered.
would be: SKW - AEPBD
Also, I write relevancy = RELZ
relevance = RELS
on the ground= OEUG
on the grounds = OEUGS
have you checked out Marla Williams' briefs?
she's got tons!!!
I love to share briefs and "I've got a million of 'em"!!
thanks for sharing the flash cards! great
practice medium!

Hey Keith! How are things going with our WV/CSRNation busy bee? Can't believe school starts again in a couple of weeks. Can't wait! Hopefully by then I'll have added some music to my page...
Thanks Keith for the birthday wishes. I had a great day ~ even though most of it was at school and in the evening at puppy training class.
I'm curious. You said your girlfriend is from Stockton. Born and raised? Still living here or in Bay Area? Did she go to school at Humphreys? I started at Humphreys until I ran out of loan money...and now i'm in qualifiers. My son is going to the test in October.
Sorry about loading you down with questions. Have a great day!
Keith, my mentor, do you have a way to add an "L" to a word when your ring finger is occupied, ie, "freckle"? Thanks. I just ordered some phrase CD's so I can speed build all these new gems. Love the flash cards, but I think I need to attack this from both directions.
Thanks, Keith. I just accidentally came up with that one on my own. I was going to check with you to see if it was total nonsense because I am new at this. Anyway, here goes: I came up with BLG for -LK and -KL endings. It is also the ~bling ending. It is working really well for me, but there are a couple of conflicts: buckle/bulk/bubbling and cicle/silk/sibling. Would you abandon the concept for these conflicts or forge on and resolve them? Maybe an asterisk in the -LK one?
I don't write silent -L's; so that won't be a factor.
I'm going to commit to the -BLG for ~lk and ~ckle. I checked out all the conflicts, most of which, fortunately, are noun and verb; so I can rely on software. The major conflict was "silk" and "sibling." I am going to use your suggested method and brief "sibling," SLIB (and BLULK for "bulk").
You asked if there were any other words in that family. Do you use "Word Finder" to check word families for potential conflicts? or to create a quick list to practice from? The one I use is called "Word Finder," but there are many. (They are designed for people who do crossword puzzles and feel the need to look up word parts . . . Nevermind. Tangent.)
Anyway, you can search for partials with an asterisk and generate these lists. This would also be a great resource for generating specific lists, adding the steno, and exporting them to flash cards.
Oh, one more . . . Does your theory distinguish between SL- and SHR-? In my theory, SHR- is SHA/R; for example SHA/RAED, "shread." That just isn't going to do. I must be hooked now.
I was wondering if sometime I could discuss with you a little bit about scoping? I have a friend that has asked me to scope for her several times and although I hate to say "no" to anything, I felt I need to look into what is involved in scoping. Not sure how it all works. Do you use "sendthisfile.com"? Uh-oh...i'm rushing off now. class is starting. talk to you later...
Keith,
Court reporting school -- "It's like Survivor." Thanks. I am now cleaning merlot off of my countertop, floor, and face. Merlot that has been through my nasopharynx! I follow your comments for advice, not housework.
LAFRT. I loved the analogy. It was worth the clean-up. I'll admit to slight jealousy that I didn't think of it. I was in qualifiers during Survivor's first season.
She said to dress fun/silly/crazy! I'm searching high and low in my closet. I'm a pretty boring dresser! We'll see how creative I can get. Hope you do the same! lol. See you tomorrow.
I took a short steno break. I am back now with a new computer, new software, and a drastically altered writer (shimmed to perfection, wide keys, and built-up vowels).
I just read your updated briefing manifesto. I find something new every time I read it. It is infinitely more practical for me now that I have wide keys.
I am undertaking my last step in writing overhaul now -- small phrases. It is amazing to see it build; it just snowballs.
How are you? What test are you working on now? (Just thought I'd try that again to see if it worked!)
Just when I think I'm through shortening my writing and all I need to do is speedbuild a little more, I come up with something else to shorten. You never told me how addictive this can be.
My current project is uploading flashcards for all prepositions with a built in "the." It must follow 70% of the time.
Before I began with San Mateo County I was a pro tem for Santa Clara but was mostly in the Palo Alto branch so I don't think I met Lily. I saw the lunch invite but I'm going to have to decline this one. My son has a football game that conflicts. But for sure the next one. Also please keep me in the loop regarding retirement activities for Linda.
Yep, that's me!!! Practicing for the online JC this morning and will be watching some MV VHS tapes this afternoon. I'm getting plenty of dictation so hopefully I can pass that test tomorrow!
Keith, it was a very nice test. I feel really good about it, even three days later. I get my results November 25th. i know the time will fly this time because I'm so busy. Thanks for asking.
WAY TOOOO MUCH TO DO, but everything is OK. I go for a job interview this afternoon and that is why I cannot get to school (boohoo--I hate to miss school!)
Hey Keith, but of course!! I am doing a depo tom at 2, a workers' comp, very easy, although the noticing atty speaks pretty fast. But you are more than welcome to join me. it's dntwn SJ, so it would be convenient if you live in this area. If not, tell me what kind of schedule you have and we'll see what we can do! that would be wonderful!!!
let me know!! Elise ps give my best to Linda and Sue -- just love those ladies!!
I 'll tell you what. I will see what kind of jobs I have this week and next, and then we'll make some kind of date as to what you can do and what kind of jobs I end up with. For some reason, it's been kind of slow the last two weeks, so not sure what it will be for the next week or so, but I'm sure we can work something out, okay. why don't you shoot me an email at elise-captioner@comcast. net and then we'll communicate that way to expedite things, okay. Does that sound okay to you? Elise let me know what you think of that idea, okay!
actually it ended up being a no-show, so it was a good thing you didn't come. but we'll get it together for the week to come. I am so happy for you, congratulations!!!! what a wonderful feeling. relish it, it goes so fast, as you know, so really pat yourself on the back for that!!! I'll wait to hear from you, Keith. Again, congrats!!!
Oh, and by the way, there's no such thing as a small envelope versus a large envelope. It was a regular legal-sized envelope and I won't be getting my license until I've paid my $100 and filled out the included application. Of course I got those items sent out in the mail yesterday! WooHoo!
Hey, Keith, way to go. I know you're going to be the BEST court reporter you can be. I enjoy reading all of your contributions to this forum. You're a man on a mission, and you have accomlished your goals. Keep it going. Be all that you can be. It will reward you later in life, more than you can imagine. I'm so happy for you! :-)
Did you get my list of agencies I sent you? I sent you a list of eight or nine agencies with contact person. Never heard back from you so wasn't sure you got it.

Could I please link to your flashcards on flashcardmachine.com? I'd like to make it as one of my "Top Posts" or "Top Links" on my blog.
Please let me know! Thank you! :)

I have a quick question for you: I am using the YOR/YAR/YIR components for "I don't __," "I can't __," and "I didn't __."
How do you phrase the positive responses, such as "I do __," "I can __," and "I did __"?
And what if the response is in the form of "I do not __," "I cannot __," or "I did not __"?
Thanks
