My daughter has been dreaming of getting a Mustang. She knows every body style of the Mustang from 1965 until now. She's getting her license next week, and I've been searching for a used car for her for a month. I kept trying to steer her away from Mustangs since they're more expensive. I kept showing her car after car, and she didn't like any of them. She finally got to the point where she was ready to get a Hyundai. We saw one yesterday, but the lot was closed. I planned to go there today to buy it.

I went home and looked on Craigslist one more time, for the heck of it. I typed in Mustang, and up popped a new listing, a reasonably-priced used 1998 Mustang with no picture. I e-mailed the owner and asked for pictures. I was pretty shocked to open his return e-mail and see a beautiful black Mustang convertible. The best part was it was really close to home, so we jumped in the car to go see it. I talked to her and my younger daughter about keeping a poker face while we're there, not to look too interested.

We took it for a ride with the top down, fell in love with the thing instantly. She did so good keeping her composure while I made the deal with the owner. As soon as we agreed on the price, the owner went inside the house to get the paperwork. My daughter than rushed at me, nearly knocked me down, and gave me a huge, huge hug and started crying, outloud crying, loud outloud crying. I saw the family inside the house looking out the window at us. They watched us, and the daughter in the house said, "I think she's crying." That was one of the best moments I have ever had in my life, watching her dream come true.

I'm taking it to my mechanic Wednesday. He could tell me I made a huge mistake buying it, but I don't care. That moment was worth it, even if it's going to cost me.
I was just looking at Jennie's blog about her HP printer, and it got me thinking how if I never printed another transcript page in my lifetime, I'd be thrilled. I now send in all of my work via e-mail. I have come to take it for granted, I guess, how much better things are today than they used to be.

I can remember working on a transcript on my Baron Oz system. I bought it with another court reporter, because the monthly payments were about the same as a mortgage payment. I would then print the transcript on my dot matrix printer. That thing would shriek shrilly (say that three times fast) as it was slowly, slowly, slowly printing. Then when the printing was done, I'd have to tear off the sides of each page carefully so that they wouldn't tear. I remember the exciting day when my partner and I bought a burster and decollator to improve the manual process of separating the pages.

Before that terrific, new technology, I would dictate my steno notes into a dictaphone, and I would drive about an hour to get to my typist's house to deliver and pick up work.

Okay, I can go further back than that, too. Before dictating, I used to type the transcripts on the newest typewriter on the market, the IBM Selectric -- no, not the correcting one, the one before that. If it was a multiple-copy order, I'd stick the carbon paper in between each page and pray to God that I didn't make a mistake. When I did make a mistake, I'd have to take that white eraser that looked like a pencil with a little blue brush on the end of it, and I'd have to get the carbon all over myself while I went in and erased each copy. Then, of course, I'd touch my face for some reason, and then I'd be blue, literally. Imagine having a date after working on a transcript -- pretty!

Every once in a while, we'd have someone stop in the office that wanted something typed. I had one guy come in. He told me that there could not be one, single typo/correction on the page. He stood behind me as I was typing. First page in, type type type -- oops. Next, oops, oops, oops. Oops oops, oops. I ripped the pieces of paper out of the typewriter one by one, feeling the heat of man's glare burning through me. Wow! I might have a nightmare about that tonight. It was awful.

Today, though, I am a realtime reporter. I love my job. Wow, what technology has done for us!
...that you could create one brief for the entire transcript? Walk in, set up, listen to them talk all day long, as fast as they want, seven hours, then just hit one stroke, pack up your equipment and go home? And have perfect translation, too, 100 percent.
Maybe just two strokes, BHRA BHRA.
...ain't so nifty. No, I usually do not say ain't, but I don't usually turn 50, either. For the past week or so I've felt like Linda Blair. What a gift I got this year, menopause. Today some guy yelled at me hanging out of the window of his truck, telling me to SLOW DOWN! (I was at a stop sign, just starting up again -- not speeding.) Today some guy yelled at me hanging out of the window of his truck, telling me to SLOW DOWN! (I was at a stop sign, just starting up again -- not speeding.) As soon as he did that, the new demons that are occupying my body screamed right back at the guy, BLEEP BLEEP! If he had stopped, I probably would have gotten into a fist fight -- something I never would have entertained the thought of, until now. After my near altercation, I ran right out to WalMart today, bought Black Cohosh, and everything I could get my hands on that had something to do with menopause. I honestly can't stand myself another minute. I sure hope this stuff works. I'm sure my family is hoping the same thing.

If you're a man reading this, sorry. But if you've been around one of us, you probably already know what I'm talking about, unfortunately.
