Tremendous damage to the well being of NCRA members has been done by NCRA board members putting forth often baseless opinions to set the policies of NCRA.
I just got through counting the 1998 and 2009 NCRA Source Book ads.
The NCRA Source Book Court Reporter Listings increased from 613 ads in 1998 to 985 ads in 2009.
That is an increase of 160% over an eleven year period.
Keep in mind the NCRA Source Book is a paper directory of ads.
In 1998 President Prout e-mailed me as follows:
"Staff and I both believe that online reporter search services, such as that found on the Verbatim Reporters Center and elsewhere on the World Wide Web, will eventually replace paper-based directories. In the interim, we will continue to offer advertising in the magazine to members who operate reporting agencies."
You can see that then President Prout and the NCRA staff were totally wrong that a paper directory such as the NCRA Source Book would be replaced by ads on the World Wide Web.
Rather than being replaced by World Wide Web ads, in actuality the Source Book ads increased by 160%.
The NCRA Board of Directors and its apologists rely very, very, very heavily on their opinions.
Those looking for the truth and looking out for the best interests of NCRA members should be very wary of accepting opinions and believing that all opinions have great merit and are of equal weight.
The following is a quote from Leroy Brownlow, a great favorite writer of mine.
Mr. Brownlow says:
"Getting the facts will save us from embarrassing blunders and unnecessary failures, bad business ventures...and many other grievous stupidities.
"'OPINION IS FREE,' they tell us, BUT NOT IF THE OPINION IS FALSE; FOR NOTHING IS AS COSTLY AS ERROR.
"The good life cannot emerge from imperfect knowledge. We cannot go forward if our understanding is backward.
"We can only begin to find fulfillment and prosperity as we deal in realities.
"Whatever future we have is in facts. IF WE BUILD ON THE SANDS OF MISINFORMATION, OUR STRUCTURE IS SURE TO FALL."
"So, my respected colleagues, we MUST NOT RELY ON OPINIONS but we MUST RELY ON FACTS SO WE DON'T BUILD ON THE SANDS OF MISINFORMATION WHERE OUR STRUCTURE IS SURE TO FALL." end of quote
I have cautioned and cautioned and pleaded and pleaded with the NCRA Board of Directors and NCRA staffers not to rely on and put forth their opinions.
Those opinions of NCRA board members and NCRA staffers often have no factual basis and are against logic or common sense.
Those opinions of NCRA board members and NCRA staffers in the past have been setforth as reasons for the continuation of Seniority Listing of the JCR Court Reporter Listings.
I make the same caution regarding the opinions of NCRA officials that the JCR Court Reporting Listing ad prices must be kept at 53% lower than their market value because the freelance agency owner members of NCRA can't afford to pay the going rate for their ads and must be subsidized with special treatment given to NO other members of NCRA.
NCRA officials start off by saying the rates are kept low for the benefit of the freelance agency owner members of NCRA.
Are the owners of multi-million dollar freelance agencies even members of NCRA?
And even if all the owners are members of NCRA, should they be entitled to ad rates over $1,000 per year lower than the market rates?
Wouldn't average members like to pay $260 in dues to receive over a $1,000 bonus in cheaper ad rates, a special perk given no other members of NCRA while the dues of those members have to be raised to cover the expenses of NCRA?
