Compatibility of Hardware, Software, and Operating Systems

My brother is thinking about getting a new laptop. He has an older model Sony, with 1 gig of RAM and Windows Vista operating system.

Today the laptops are offering 4 gigs of RAM and Windows 7 operating system.

On QVC, today only (Sunday, 12/13), the Special Value of the Day is a HP laptop, 4 gigs of RAM, Windows 7 operating system, choice of DVD or Blue-ray, 6-cell lithium battery, 3 years of McAfee, and a lot of other extras for $729 to $799, depending on whether you get the DVD or Blue-ray.

Here's my concern. This HP laptop is a 64-bit, as opposed to a 32-bit. I read on another forum that the 64-bit is not compatible with some software, as well as some printer drivers, requiring folks having to purchase new printers in some cases.

I also wonder if Microsoft Word would operate properly, as well as some transcription software, on a 64-bit computer, and how is the compatibility with Windows 7?

I have not read anything bad -- YET -- about Windows 7, but each time Microsoft comes out with a new operating system, there seems to be compatibility issues.

Can somebody explain the 64-bit, the pros and cons? Also who's running Windows 7 now? How do you like it?

TIA to any and all responders!
