It just dawned on me to try to use the iPhone as a backup recorder. I downloaded a free app called iTalk and it syncs through iTunes and then you can download the file to your PC.  Once on my PC, I convert the file to an mp3.

Just testing it out at home, the iPhone's internal mic works great, but I'll have to see how it works in a larger setting.  I do a lot of public hearings in large rooms, so that will be the true test.  I believe there are external mics that you can buy as well.

Is anyone else using their iPhone in this way?

Very interesting.  Too bad it doesn't sync to your transcript too.  I didn't know there was an app for that.

I've never tried that, but I know other reporters do. I think someone on this board said they do, but I can't remember who. Maye they'll respond.

I've used it for a backup recorder, but I've used the Voice Memos app that already comes with the phone.  The sound quality is amazing.
