Well, I am smarter. I attempted to replace the battery myself - went to worse case scenario. The end result is I messed up the writer. I had a relative (very qualified) replaced the battery. I think Glen mentioned on another forum that he bought a Stenoram II for his niece and it didn't work.
Basically, there is a small motor that makes the thing work; JM Steno said the little motor was burn't to a crisp.Total cost is $250 (including the new battery). There must be a part that registers something - because the guy at JM Steno told me that someone tried to replace the battery twice. The battery I originally took out, I put that into the Stenoram III, total time was ten minutes and it is working great for practice.
Bottom line is, if a writer says not to do it yourself, it probably is more technical that it looks. If a professional messes it up, it's their financial problem.
