Hi!

I am currently a full-time CR student in Dallas, Texas. I am in my 200s. My current part-time job keeps cutting back hours. I'm already limited on my hours as is and have been staying at school later to get more practice in.

Does anyone in my area have a suggestion of what I can do? I'm not comfortable enough to try CART. Actually I'm not comfortable enough in my realtime capabilities for it.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a firm or anything that may be looking for some help in the office for anything?
I plan to check out my local community college's CART services to possibly sit in on classes for extra practice and dictionary building. Which may help me land a PT job there. But if that doesn't work out even some late office hours or Saturday hours.

My husband and I are in a tight situation that may lead to me needing to quit school. I can't do that. I don't want to fall behind. I haven't taken a break in school yet and have avoided it as much as possible.

If anyone has a suggestion and don't want to post it publicly, my email address is phillips.anastasia@gmail.com.

Thanks,

Anastasia

Hi, Anastasia
So sorry you are having to worry with finances and school. My daughter just finished court reporting school here in Dallas and she did it by working at UPS after school. UPS does tuition reimbursement so maybe this would be an option for you to help you stay in school. Good Luck, you are so close!!
Hi, Anatasia.

You might be able to pick up some extra $$ as a note taker.

What you would be doing is using your steno machine to take notes in a class or two, which will then be made available to students for a fee. You would be paid somewhere around $15.00 an hour.

Another option is to check Craig's List for transcription work. In this instance, you would be using your steno skills (or "skillz," as you young whipper-snappers say these days) to transcribe either audio tapes, .mp3 files, or CDs in FTR Gold format.

If you get a tape, you can use the basic instructions in my article, "Different Dictation" and convert the taped audio to .mp3 format, then you can use Express Scribe and a foot pedal to control the audio.

Hope that's of some use ... and good luck!

Thanks everyone. I looked at Craig's List and the list of people looking for transcript work is endless. None of them stated they had any experience relating to CR. I may have a chance with that.
Most of the postings appeared to be businesses though. Not sure I'm credible enough for that.

I student software. I had considered scoping while in school, but when I went to the convention in 2007 many of the CSRs told me it may interfere too much with school.

I have a meeting with the person in charge of CART at the local community college. I'm going to talk to her and see if I may be able to do that after school some. :) I hope so.

I will let you all know. She seemed really excited that I was interested. :)
