Glad I found the officials. We need help in San Diego. We are the second largest court in California and yet we are NOT allowed to go paperless. We have battled this for five years. We are going to try to put more pressure on our Court but we need data. Does anyone have stats on worker's comp injuries pre-paperless v. post-paperless reporting in any courts? The more the better. We need ammo!

Hi Everyone! I just joined this site and then this community. I work in California, in the bay area, and have been a court reporter for about 21 years. I am currently in a criminal jury trial assignment. I've worked all facets of the judicial system at the state level during my career. We were on the brink of losing our jobs because of the economy. Good ole' Arnie (Arnold Schwartzenegger) wanted to get rid of us. We were very happy to hear this week we were saved from the budget crunch... so far! Anyway, just wanted to say hello from California.

Hello!
I work in Oklahoma. We, as officials, are considered at-will employees in this state. I happen to work for a district judge who travels to five counties. Thankfully I rarely have to travel wtih him. As a district judge he hears civil and criminal cases. Of course, I would much rather deal with crimes than divorces and child custody issues! UGH!! Although, I will say that reporters in this state make more $ on civil appeals than criminal.

Hi, I work in Wisconsin as an official in Racine County. We're personal appointees of our judges. Every two years we rotate into a different branch of court. This past August 1 my judge and I moved into a civil court case load. Prior to that, we spent two years working felony cases. Glad to be out of there!

Hi Cassandra. I work in a pool with 17 reporters covering 18 judges and 10 magistrates in my courthouse. I am in Federal Court, by the way, here in Brooklyn, New York. I have, however, worked my way up from the very bottom of the state system to the State Supreme Court which is New York's highest trial level court. I am currently not part of a union because in Federal Court we are considered at-will employees.

In New York, the officials on the state level are represented by seven different unions depending on what part of the state they are located. We have the New York State Court Reporters Association and the Association works along with the unions on professional as well as legislative issues.

First of all, I don't do roughs for anyone. You want it that fast, order it as a daily or an immediate and I'll have it done for you. For state officials, union membership is mandatory. Union membership has benefits such as greater power in contract negotiations, obtaining medical benefits, etc. The cons are that sometimes unions protect workers who shouldn't be protected and they wind up being a disruption on the staff. My personal opinion.

hope this helps you out.
