I am a second year student learning realtime reporting and am very excited about it!
  • Cheree Murphy-Carlson

I recommend the StenoCast Red also! I love it! I just got done with a two-day realtime job and it's so easy to set up and use and no stress! It is worth every penny I spent on it!
  • Debbie

What is the real time kit that Stenograph sells? Is anyone familiar with that? I am thinking that it can only be used with Case Cat.
  • Debra Flamer

I use the wired serial port and usb cables from Stenograph...but I am on Case Catalyst. They can hook up to attorneys computers who are on LiveNote or Case View (Case Catalyst). Their newest version of Case View Net is wireless Internet where you have your own little router with your address...but it is Case Cat-specific. It's nice, though because it refreshes the steno output on the spot. I just haven't made the monetary plunge yet...maybe before the end of the year so I can get a tax writeoff!!!
  • Debra Flamer

There was a seminar at the NCRA convention this year at the National Harbor where four different vendors of realtime products gave out info on each of their products...pros and cons. The audience of reporters, etc., found them all a bit "proprietary" and wished they would try working together towards common ground "getting out the record"...but don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon. All about the Benjamins.
  • Debbie

hope to get the Red before the end of the year. I have been using cables and really want to go wireless!
  • Kellie Zollars

Jeanese, you can go into Brief It and say you don't want it to "require" an asterisk. I just learned that at the STAR convention last weekend. Go to Tools, Options, brief it, options, steno include/exclude, then click on entry, go up to edit and click delete (or modify). Also, If you have words translating wrong because you hit one of Brief It's briefs, you can change the option to set it to click twice to define. then when you want to use one of their briefs, you hit the outline twice the first time to say you want to use it, then only once when it comes up again in depo. I hope that's clear. Let me know if it's not.
  • Kellie Zollars

Oops, didn't realize I was so far back in time on the discussion when I commented about Brief It. I was replying to a September post - sorry.

    • if you use wireless or cables
    • if you have or need extra laptops/netbooks
  • Naola "Sam" Vaughn

Hope you like it.  I had one and could never get the machine to stay accurate.  I spent twice as much time editing as I had with even my Stentura which stacked horribly.  I loved it for the first year because of the portability, but soon grew to hate it because of its inaccuracies and "losing" stuff.

  • Jenny Griffin, RMR CRR CCRR CRC

I also had the Lightspeed and spent at least a hundred hours tweaking it until I got it right.  The Infinity Ergo I now have is wonderful!  Yes, the LS is light, but so is the Infinity Traditiona - and the Ergo is just a bit heavier, but feels so right!

  • Christy Fagan, CRR, RMR, CSR

Hey Jenny, can you send Lisa an invite to the Infinity Users Group on Facebook.  I was telling her about it.  She's from here in Dallas but was up in Colorado working and went and saw Jason and the machine and ordered it.  She played around on mine at the Texas realtime test a few months ago.

  • Jenny Griffin, RMR CRR CCRR CRC

I can't find Lisa on FB!  Lisa, get over there.  Just adjust your privacy stuff.  It's well worth it for a new Infinity user.

  • Monyeen Black

I get to get my hands on the Infinity machines in two weeks at a Realtime Ready seminar. I CANNOT WAIT!

Here's my ergo Infinity without the screen on it.

  • Christy Fagan, CRR, RMR, CSR

I get comments at EVERY deposition.

  • Jenny Griffin, RMR CRR CCRR CRC

Jeff, here's a paste of what I wrote in the closed Infinity Users group on Facebook a while ago, talking about depth and my Infinity Ergo - and remember I had the LS for at least a year:

I am getting perfect results at fast testimony with the depth my pics show and these settings. I experimented with a shallower depth, but what happened is while I was able to achieve perfection on a CRR or even a 225 Q & A, during an actual depo, the shallower settings were just too sensitive, registering my hesitations where I was making contact with the keys without knowing I was. At this longer depth I don't have to be so careful - which was wearing me out!

The moral: Throw out your idea that you need the most shallow stroke ever. You need the stroke that gives you the greatest accuracy with the most ease. My fingers are still totally happy. The force required to press down is still super light!

Jeff, I know you can't see my pics on FB, but I'll tell you that right now, the depth of my -F key is at a tad less than 1/4 of an inch, and that's when pressing it down all the way, which I don't when writing.  The activation point is higher than that.  The amount of effort it takes to press is so minimal.  I wish you could try one out for a while!

  • Ginger H. Brooks, CRR, CSR, CLR

I haven't measured mine, Jeff, but I have a very shallow stroke, and I don't have any problems.

  • Jenny Griffin, RMR CRR CCRR CRC

I also feel compelled to add the fact that we are all realtime reporters.  We want/demand the greatest accuracy and ease from our writers because what we write goes out to others.

Ginger, I wish you would find a little measuring device and let us know.  Make Jeff happy!

  • Ginger H. Brooks, CRR, CSR, CLR

I'll try to do that this afternoon, Jenny.

  • Kathy Fennell

Lisa Gretarsson, I just friended you to see if you're really interested in selling your LightSpeed.  Please send me a message privately.  Thanks!

  • Wynne A. Pauly

    Lisa,

What do you think of the Passport versus the Infinity?

  • Wynne A. Pauly

    Or Jenny, too, or Anybody,

What do you think of the Passport versus the Infinity?

  • Jenny Griffin, RMR CRR CCRR CRC

I've never had the Passport, but I have tried it out briefly at some conventions.  It isn't split!  I love the split Infinity Ergo, and I don't ever want to go back to having my hands together.  The fact that the Infinity now has onboard audio and SD card backups and can be adjusted without an Allen wrench - and reflect my strokes so accurately - is a huge difference from previous split versions.

  • Naola "Sam" Vaughn

I love my Passport for the adjustability and accuracy!  I have my stroke depth adjusted to about 1/8th of an inch and things are VERY accurate.  None of my machines have been this accurate (Stentura 8000LX, Stylus, Lightspeed) except for my old StenoRamIII.  I have tried the Gemini in various iterations in the past, but have not tried the Infinity.  I did LOVE the split keyboard of the Gemini but the depth of stroke really hurt my hands on that machine and the accuracy wasn't as good as I had hoped.  Even when I got it adjusted on the latest version before the Infinity came out (can't remember the name of it), I could not get it shallow enough to not hurt my hands and forearms.  But I would like to try the split Infinity just to see if it compares accuracy-wise with the Passport and whether the tension is the keys would hurt my arms.

  • Wynne A. Pauly

    Thank you Sam and Jenny,

Ah, so the split aspect is the attracting feature.

Sam, I'm using a StenoRamIII....It is super accurate...here's to the way machines used to be made!!!!

I am intrigued by the Passport though.

    Afternoon, everyone!

We've been members of CSRNation for a few years now and are ready for professionals to take a look at our YouTube endeavor, The Closed Captioning Project.

We are playing with new ideas for closed captioning as well as captioning political speeches for the greater good of the Internet.

Any comments, suggestions, subscriptions would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know if a Bridge file can be imported to an attorney's Summation SBF program after depo has concluded?

  • Quyen

The Bridge file could be saved as a .txt file and then imported into Summation. I've never had to do that before, so wild guess on my part, and if I'm incorrect, apologies, if so. :)

  • Anita Worthington

    Thank you, Quyen.

Now...do you know if the attorney's highlights and marks will be on the txt file?

  • Quyen

No special formatting is retained in .txt files, such as highlighting, underlining, etc. The .txt file is exactly like the ASCII .txt files.

  • Anita Worthington

    Again, thank you.

    Appreciate your input.

  • Quyen

The attorney could save it as a Bridge file. Then s/he could install Bridge on his/her home/office computer, open the file in Bridge, and it should retain all markings, which I think would be the easiest solution.

  • Anita Worthington

Good solution, but my sense is they're devoted to Summation :)

  • Quyen

Mm. They're one of THOSE. :)

  • Anita Worthington

    You're getting the picture...

Have you used LiveDeposition?  You can save an rtf file that can be imported to Summation with highlights and marks.  But it's a very basic realtime viewer, so not as impressive as Bridge but it does what most attorneys do in depos, which is mark and search.

  • Quyen

I've used LiveDepo only once, so I don't know anything about it. Just tell the attorney that life would be so much easier if they "upgrade" their old habits. I bet Bride could do everything Summation does.

  • Anita Worthington

    We'll see about that :)

  • Mary Hogan

Can anyone tell me if there's realtime work in DC?

I'm in San Francisco and relocating to DC.  Thanks for

    Heads up, Southern California Freelancers,

James Autrey, Esq.  has been owing me $55 for 12 weeks.  He has promised twice (via email) to send a check for payment.  Latest email says for me to "watch my mail for cashiers check."  His office is in Manhattan Beach, and he appeared before my judge in Orange County Superior Court, so he gets around.   Be sure you get your money before you do ANYTHING for him.  I was 'doing him a favor' by getting an expedite to him, and I'm still waiting for payment!!!  and really, $55?  It was a small transcript that he needed to file his appeal.

Dear Professionals and Friends.   We are in need of court reporters.  Please help bring more students to this wonderful field.  Put the word out and spread it all over that we are in need of reporters nationwide and will be in more need as we have more reporters getting ready to retire.  Send students to your nearby schools, please.

    Your Friend,
