Building a reporter/scopist relationship from the ground up

Reporters, your golden opportunity may have just presented itself.

Read Brytta Fitzgibbon's post.  Brytta is a scopist-to-be, having completed her academic work and now looking for a reporter with whom to intern.  She hasn't bought software yet.

I know you are busy people, but especially for those of you who are dissatisfied with the scopists you've used, here's a lady you can train to do things your way.

I'm willing to mentor Brytta on using Eclipse, if she'd like help…

Nasty Scam from "Microsoft Technical Support"

Several months ago I was forwarded information about a scam where telephone calls from "Microsoft Technical Support" informed you there was a problem with your operating system.  MTS offered to fix your problem.  You had to give the caller access to your computer, naturally.  It gets more interesting (see link below).

I tucked the info into the far recesses of my brain.  This was going on in Europe.

Well...got a phone call the other day from these folks.  Very personalized,…

Texas Attorney General's decision on non-steno methods of taking depositions

Here:  https://www.oag.state.tx.us/opinions/opinions/50abbott/op/2012/htm/ga0928.htm

His decision does not mention whether such deposition testimony can be made a part of a trial record.

Texas reporters and scopists, make your voices heard.  If Judge Abbott neglected the ramifications of his decision when it comes to trial transcripts, perhaps he would like to take a second…

Hi Judy,

Thanks for your nice comments.  I have advertised on CC and Scopists.com as well as CSRnation.  A very nice reporter has responded and I now have my first job.  Yay!

I don't know what CRF is.  Haven't tried Depoman yet, but will.

Yikes, let's hope it doesn't get that bad.  What will I do with myself?  Thanks for the compliment on being a great reporter, but I don't think you've ever edited one of my transcripts.  We may have to get it together one of these days and try it out.

I'm really struggling right now finding scopists that are worth a darn, put lightly.

Thanks, Joyce!  I took the picture of the mountains and lake.  It's my favorite spot in New Hampshire.  It's beautiful and different with every season.

If you have any pictures you'd like featured, send them to me.

Thanks, Joyce.  You should not be thanking me, however.  I let my friend, Janet McHugh do what she wants with the backdrop.  We lately have decided to let people send us pictures where they live and we are posting them as the backdrop so everyone can contribute.  Send us where you live and we'll post yours as well!!

Sorry, Joyce, I'm not much help.  Didn't even know you could do that go begin with.  I would think that's a browser issue.  Not quite sure.  I have always just gone to the page where I see there is a discussion or hit on the "comment" tab in the "Latest Activity" thread to see what someone has said.  That still works.

Hello, Joyce

I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand your last question.  My lead-in post where?  Can you give me a little more detail on what you're talking about?

Hey, Joyce!

Thank you for the very kind and encouraging words!  Maybe I'll take another stab at realtime.  I did several RT jobs when I was living in Dallas; but since I have been out here in east Texas, there has been very little call for realtime (except by agencies I would not work for, for ethical reasons), so I have gotten away from it.  Life's a little slower out here in the Piney Woods.

Got a Diamante last year, and I could never write RT on it because of the words that seem to come up all the time that should not be there, the "approximate," the "the," the "it," the "are," the -- it really drives me crazy, and I know it's my own fault.  It has such a sensitive, soft, cushiony (ugh) touch, and I have not tweaked it.  I am loaning my Mira out to an official in Oklahoma right now; but I get it back next month, and I may start using it again.  I really should sell this Diamante--it (of course, I mean I) creates so much more work, and I would like to get back into the realtime swing.  Even thinking of getting myView, hmmmm.

I just recently got on 5 (glad I waited until some bugs were worked out).  I'd like to hear of the bells and whistles, though.  I don't particularly like the suggestions of what I might want to do next in the file, as it takes too much time to look over there and see if there's something else I could do that I didn't realize was available, although I can see the real benefit for those learning the software.  I have set my scoping .ini so suggestions are turned off.  I still have never gotten my head around auto-indexing--I cut-and-paste every job and fill in the index manually. O_o  I was in heaven with your auto-indexing!!

We are living outside of Longview, Texas, and my main office is in Longview.  My dad is elderly; and when my mother passed in 2006, I slowly started making the full transition here.  It took me quite a while--just gave up my downtown Dallas apartment last year (I still miss proofreading at the Adolphus!).

I don't know if BP will get this far up--and if it did, I imagine the larger agencies that do the contracting, et cetera, will get the lion's share, or, yes, a revolting thought: going by way of ER.  So I will probably be out on that deal, but I am so thankful to have good clients and am staying very busy.

There have been many times I wish we had teamed up.  Just got through with a mountain of pages.  I remember the last time we worked together, you were going to New York, I believe, on vacation.  I am so used to doing A-to-Z and easily fell back into that mode.  I would love to work with you again, assuming you have an opening for another reporter.  My email address is amandaleighcsr@gmail.com, and cell is (903) 806-3294.  Let's! :)

I am doing well.  Since last we spoke, I have completely moved to east Texas area--oh, and something you can relate to: I no longer have my settings for numbers all words (lol), although you can bet your sweet bippy if I ever do realtime, words it is!!

I have often wondered if you were paid--she told me she had paid you, but I had my doubts.  After that "incident," Heather and I didn't really talk much anymore--she dropped out of court reporting a while back and, last I heard, had a commercial cleaning service.

Please look back on your records and tell me what she stiffed you for--or if you have a vague recollection, let's go with that.  I feel responsible, since I recommended you to her (and her to you--I remember how cautious you are not to get yourself in such a pickle).  I would be glad--and thankful, if you'd let me--to get that paid and get it off my conscience.  It's a write-off for me--just a loss for you.

It really bothers me that some court reporters are deadbeats--it surprised me that Heather turned out to be one.  I have heard other horror stories, like getting a scopist to jump through all kinds of hoops just to complain about the invoice and not want to pay.  I, on the other hand, have paid a lot of money for lousy work over the years.  Your work stands alone as being professional.

A :)

Hello Joyce,
that's is an excellent idea and I do agree with you it would be great to have.
Sadly I do this on my free time and I would have to spend lots of time separating them.
I have added it to my list to do.

thanks!
