A few months ago I wrote about a new court reporting school that is opening up in the West Los Angeles area.

Here is a brochure with some pricing.

I think many of you know Jack and were wondering where she was after she got bought out by Gallo.

An official Jack Daniel sighting here.

Taped dictation? You could do that at home.

Early this year I called Jack Daniel at her office number in Los Angeles, after reading online about her New England school. At that time she was offering to personally instruct theory students in her office one-on-one pending opening her new program in Southern California. I thought that was very generous of her. However, on asking about how her school would operate, I was taken aback to hear that: 1. The school would use DigiText as its theory. 2. Speedbuilding classes would be taped dictation, not live teachers. 3. In her opinion, state certification (California CSR, or the RPR in some states) for court reporters is unnecessary, that in Massachusetts certification isn't required and there are excellent reporters working there.

The person I spoke with was warm and courteous and seemed genuinely interested in helping produce good reporters or CART providers. But I have serious doubts about the program and its costs, including required outlay for equipment, if the school is being run as it was described to me.

We are very blessed with our junior college system in California! Even our Cal State system is so much cheaper than other states. Of course, that may be the only thing cheaper here... LOL I can't see spending 20-40k for court reporting school when there are public schools, but that's just me.

I think the private schools probably are about that much. It just seems like so much because I went to public school for practically nothing.

IMHO anything is a lot of money if the quality of the education is not great. When you get a first class education, as Jack provides, the cost or investment is worth every dime, if not more. At least no one would be throwing out a dime by investing in her excellent training.

You know, it's been so long since I've been in school, I can't even remember what I paid. Maybe some students will chime in and let us know if that's expensive or not.

Wow, that is a lot of money.
