I have only shopped Verizon so far and learned that a wireless connection will run about $75/mo. Can anyone recommend a good and more affordable provider?
Tricia, thank you and all who replied to my inquiry respecting internet services away from home. I had an interruption in my court reporting life which obviated the need for a service. I am back to having a need and will shop Verizon again and Clear Wire. I very much appreciate the leads.
Did you decide which way to go re: the wireless and Verizon? Fill us in.

Glen, thank you for the referral to Clear Wire (along with the link). I'll shop them right now.

Janice --
Have you tried ClearWire? I *think* they have service in Huntington Beach.
I have their home service, and it's been pretty good thus far (been about a year). I don't have the card the link goes to, though; it's a PCMCIA card, and my Mac has an Express card slot ... and the coverage in the new apartment is not what it was in the old one!
I recently had to get a Verion wireless card as I was staying at my mother's due to her illness. There are two plans: a 3 gig and a 5 gig. Within five days, I was over the limit with the 3 gig. I called them and up'd it to a 5 gig, the cost being $39.95 for the 3 gig and 59.95 for the 5 gig.
What got me is when they explained the difference. A 3 gig, unlike what it sounds, only allows you 50 MEG of usage. The 5 gig is 5 GIG of usage. Anything over the allotted amount is at $.25/meg. None of this made sense to me. I am under the 30-day recission (sp?) clause and plan to bring it back. Good ole Verizon.
You might want to try AT&T. I think their unlimited usage with an aircard is $60/month. But check it out before taking my $$$$ figure on that one.
You must have opted for the cheaper plan, because I've had a Verizon card for several years and have never been charged an overage fee. I know there's two plans, and I've got the more expensive one.
I had Verizon for about 2 months with the wireless connection card. I was told when I purchased the plan and device that the amount of usage downloaded and uploaded would be more than sufficient for all the audio files I am sent to use when scoping. That was not the case. I had approximately $200 in overages, and that was during a slower time with work. I cancelled the plan imediately. The plan I signed had an early termination fee, but after reviewing my charges and seeing I was THAT far over, Verizon waived out my overages and ETF. I do not know about any other providers or plans, but be careful about any plans that are limited, especially if you send a lot of wave files.
