Has anyone had this?  Ortho wants to do surgery; I am getting a second opinion.

I have arthritis in my thumbs, but am able to keep it at bay with salmon oil supplements and occasional steroid shots from pain management doctor. I also changed my diet to reduce some foods that cause overall inflammation and that has helped, too. My mom did have to have surgery on her thumb because she had what sounds like what you are describing. She has arthritis and the "pad" part was completely deteriorated at the joint. They did surgery and it was very successful with not too bad of a recovery, if I remember correctly. It's been at least 10 years since she did this. Good luck!

I am so sorry for you, Renee.  I have tendonitis and also watch my diet and take fish oil pills, etc. to make it not hurt so much.  I hope it's not so bad that you can't work.
