I've seen a couple threads on this and I was wondering if someone could answer a couple questions on it before I run out and buy one. Are you able to design the sticker however you want? The ones I have now I had printed for me and they have my name, a place for the number, a line for the number of pages, the date, and the witness's name, plus a heavy line all around it. Will I be able to make something like that? And how hard is it to design the sticker? How much do the stickers cost to buy a roll? I literally have enough exhibit stickers to last the next 10 years probably, but right now I've got about 75 exhibits to mark and I'm just tired of writing out all the info. (Well, actually I type it on the stickers in my typewriter except for the number of pages, but still!)

I just got my labels from Doberman. It looks like it's just one long, continuous label. Is that how they are supposed to be? Do you cut each label individually?

Yes, that's the way it's supposed to be. The 570 has an automatic cutter on it. When you hit print, it prints and cuts.

I've been reading this thread and am curious about how many of you actually bring it on a job with you? Also, did I read somewhere that it makes it easy for the attorney to see what the next number is without having to ask? That may have been in the other thread. If that's true, how does that work? I want to buy one too but I just want to understand it before I do.

I have taken mine with me. Used to all the time. I've gotten spoiled with everything in a shoulder bag with the LS.

I don't know how it's any easier for the atty to see the next number than to look at the last exhibit. I mean, on your computer screen, when you're on the labelmaker screen, you see the next number, but you'll have the CAT screen up most often. YOU can see the next number just by flipping to that screen.

Thanks for th einfo. I may have misunderstood the message I was referring to about the attorneys seeing the next number.

I did forget to ask another question. In depos, when they mark an exhibit you don't have a lot of time because they may just write the number on the exhibit and you label it later, which is fine, but say you needed to make a label right then and there, do you actually have to stop writing, and use your computer keyboard to initiate the print of the label, or is there a way to do a macro to initiate it from your writer? I'm just wondering if there's a way to do it on the fly?

You know, people worry about the time. But when I mark exhibits by hand, I write the name of the witness, the number, the date, and usually my initials. If they can't wait the 5 seconds for me to do that, they need therapy.

To use the labelmaker, I Ctrl-Alt to my open labelmaker program, click Print. It spits it out and I put it on. If they can't wait the 3 seconds for that, they REALLY need therapy! I put the witness' name and date in at the beginning of the depo, and it's truly a matter of clicking Print.

I don't feel the least bit bad about taking a few seconds to do my job, and I don't allow anyone to try to make me feel that way.

Try buy.com and Staples online. I've seen them anywhere from $35-50. Don't forget to order the continuous tape labels from Doberman Labels. 1-1/7" wide.

As far as them knowing the next exhibit number, I have small Post-its and I prenumber a few of them (depending on how many I think they'll use), and then put them on the side of my computer so THEY CAN SEE THEM. First time they mark an exhibit, I just rip off the first one and slap it on the exhibit. After that, they're usually the ones to grab the Post-its to (1) see what the next number is and (2) slap it on the exhibit. Then I put a proper exhibit sticker on once I'm home.

Brenda & Judy, thank you both for your comments. That helps a lot. You are right, Brenda, if they can't wait for us to do our job properly, there is a real problem! Luckily, I am in a place where I have great attorneys who are not as uptight as the big city ones. It's usually when I get those that I have a problem.

I am definitely going to buy this little gem. I think it will be a great addition to my other gadgets that I use in my job.

Just reading this thread and wanted to offer my solution: Why not order personalized addy labels? I did and it's such a time saver!!!
I just created a label online (vistaprint.com and plenty of other places provide the service) and for only $1.99 per 140 labels (which, actually, the way I created my labels gives me 280 exhibit stickers)!!!!
I've attached copies of my labels here - you can get very creative with text and colors, too. When I get them I just score the sheets down the middle and VOILA!! Ready to bring the labels to work. No need to buy a machine, create labels on the fly or deal with any of the issues mentioned. Yet another way to make our lives and jobs easier!

Well, I did that years ago. I had a printer make me labels on sheets of Avery labels. I think I had 10,000 labels printed. I have PLENTY left. BUT with those, I have to write in or type in the witness's name and the date on each one, plus the numbering. This machine avoids all that. You just type in the name and date once. And with my witnesses lately and names like Soleimanzadeh and 20 or 30 exhibits in a depo, it saves me a lot of typing!
