Hi, guys. I have the Elan Mira Student. According to the instructions, it says to hold down the far left-hand button (the one that's not quite as tall as the others) to turn the power off. When I do this it turns off for about a second and then turns right back on. Any ideas? Am I reading the directions wrong? Thanks in advance!

Hi, Amy.

Never heard of the Elan Mira Student ... is it new?

That said, I seem to recall something about putting a writer into "student mode," which would make the writer not write to disk/memory card. The idea is to avoid cheating on tests.

I suspect that's what the instructions you're following are trying to do.

That said, you might want to search the Help files over on Stenograph's site. You should be able to find a good phrase or two to search for in the instructions you're following; hopefully that will bring up something appropriate that explains what those instructions are meant to do.

Hope that helps a bit ....

Amy -- I have one also. The power will not turn off if the power charger is connected. Try disconnecting the charger (electrical plug) and the power should turn off with that button. I think the off mode is only to conserve battery. By the way, the help group is pretty good at the manufacturer. Don't be shy about calling. I certainly had to to understand several things when starting up this new course of study.

Enjoy....I love not having paper tape. So much better for the environment. But the limited memory can be frustrating sometimes.
Linda, you are a genius. Thanks!!
