Any tips, tricks, things to watch out for re LiveNote Stream?

I have my first streaming job set up and would like to know what others have encountered so I'll be that much more prepared.

Any info is much appreciated!

If you are using the same computer for Stream Manager (can only be done in XP), you have to set up the Stream Manager session first before starting your file in your CAT system. If you're using a second computer, you don't have to worry about that. I have used Stream Manager with a wireless connection, but it's better to use a wired connection.

Yes, using it from my laptop, but it has Vista. Hmmm. I loaded the software this a.m., but have not done a test session yet. The agency is arranging for the connection now, hoping it's going to be a wired connection all the way around (one less thing to worry about).

Rule 1) Start Stream session, then CAT software.

Hi Judy,

If you are using Vista, you have to have a second laptop. Load the Stream Manager on the second laptop. Then you output to that computer like you would any realtime hookup. You don't have to have the session set up first on the Stream Manager computer. You can start your CAT system file first.

I just e-mailed Jerome at LN and asked this question: Can you run Stream on Vista? And he said yes. I guess my question wasn't specific enough.

Does Stream refresh to the connected computers?

That's great, Judy, that you can now use the same computer with Vista. I hope that we'll be able to do that with Windows 7 soon. I certainly prefer running it on the same computer and not bringing another one if I don't have to.

Stream does not refresh.

I have done the Livenote streaming maybe 10 times and never had a problem. However, I use a separate computer for the Livenote streaming than my main computer. I understand you can use the same computer but I have not tried that yet.

When I used to use it about eight years ago, it was a bit more complicated than it is now. LN has streamlined the process and is super easy to use. Not much to know besides just putting in the case name and password and hit connect, obviously you have to be online. Super easy.

If you do use your CAT-loaded computer, can you still edit the transcript at breaks?

Maybe a better question would be, what's the benefit of streaming from a second computer?

I don't think there is a benefit. I am just an old dog that does not like to learn new tricks. The computer that I have that has the Livenote streaming software on it is not my regular computer that I use to write to.

I think it makes more sense for you to just use one computer; learn the easier way and less equipment to lug to the job.

Since you're using the same computer, select Local Cat System. If you are also outputting to people in the room, select the Com Port number that you're outputting through.

If I'm Streaming, why would I be outputting to the people in the room? Couldn't I just make my life as easy as possible and tell them to jump on in with an Internet connection? I'd really like to manage only one "connection" (makes life a whole lot easier).

And thanks for giving me that screen shot. I tried to get into the program today and they're saying until the agency adds me and the job into their system, I have nothing to log into. I asked, but can't I go in and configure my setups before that happens? I was swatted away like a bug or something. They have no time for such trivial matters of life and hook-ups. I guess they'd rather have me get prepared ten minutes before the job.

Both of you (or anybody else that'd like to answer): Is LN Streaming like Bridge where, if I make a correction on my computer, that it'll refresh the attorneys' screens? I'm just wondering whether (a) if I do work or (b) a scopist does work in the file before we close out for the day, whether that'll go over to the attorneys' screens. And, boy, I sure didn't want to bother those guys over at LN with such a question!

I've done what you are asking, hooked up to LNS and had the attys hook up via the Internet. Much easier than futzing with serial connections, etc. It worked like a charm.

I also agree with Kelli on the testing. LN tech support let me test it before the depo (days before) so I could make sure that all the settings were correct.
