I like the MeritWriter I got.  It's brand new, from under a bed or closet.  I bought one back in '84(?).  (But because of life, I sold the writer almost new and took other work).

Per DigitalCat, the MeritWriter should use IOGear or Dynex.  I know the adapters work because they work with the Stenoram II.

With the MeritWriter, DigitalCat opens up a document, but absolutely no steno is translated.  Should I buy (another) adapter, or is there something wrong with the writer?

(I am not intending to use the MeritWriter as a full time reporter, but it is brand new and I would like to have it for use.).

Mary Jo,

I just noticed that AccuLaw repairs Merit Writers.  You might want to give them a call re: the USB to serial if you haven't already fixed it.  Their number is 1 (800) 251-5529.

Tricia

I took the writer out of its case and looked it over real good.  There is a computer board.  The disk drive has two connections.  There are two sets of wires for the battery connections.  There is the connection for the charger.  There is the serial port connection.  The port connection looked pretty simplistic.

I have no doubt the maker of the MeritWriter they customized it.  At least the Stenoram II was easy to get an adapter for.  After I was done, the battery connection does not work.  Either I did something or I destroyed the batteries.

It's not worth spending any more time on or money on.  I will call Acculaw and see if they will take it for trade ($100 or whatever).  I do need something far better.
