I think FTR has a FREE software that you can use a foot pedal with.  You may want to go to their website and see.

I have a question regarding foot pedals.  I primarily play back audio on Transcription Buddy software and I use the Olympus foot pedal.  I occasionally get a transcription job on FTR software, which isn't compatible with either Transcription Buddy or the Olympus foot pedal.  Any suggestions?

Hi:  How do  you determine rate charged per audio minute and/or per audio hour?

Thanks!

Hi Tina,

I'm in court reporting school and do transcription work.  It's harder than school because the audio quality isn't always good, people talk over each other, and you need to identify voices from sound alone.  I bought a usb pedal for 50 dollars and use it with express scribe (free).

Digicat has a $75/month professional version.  You can catnip into word from the student version, but being able to cut and paste will save you a lot of time.  The first few transcriptions you do might seem really hard, but it gets easier.

Has anyone ever done transcription work as a way to earn extra money during school?  Is it possible to use my student equipment to do transcription work or would I have to upgrade to professional equipment?

Thanks, Jennie. I have been looking on eBay for a Sanyo Memoscriber TR-8080.

Most tapes are standard. I get micro tapes maybe once a year, if that.

There is no transcriber machine that plays both micro and standard.

Micros have the worst audio quality of all. I cringe when I have to transcribe one. Because of the ribbon being so small, they sometimes get buckled, resulting in audio fading in and out the entire tape. It is almost as if you have to do a tap dance on the foot pedal to keep the sound clear. I used to charge 50 cents more per page for microcassette recordings.

Which transcriber to purchase -- micro or standard -- may depend on your client base, I think.

The majority of my work today is digital recordings, though I still do get standard tapes. If I do get a micro recording, it's usuallyh a 5- or 10-minute telephone conversation. Very rarely do I get a large job of micro recordings.
