Hi, Debbie,
I know what you mean about the esteem thing. There was definitely a frustration factor when I started practicing at super-high speeds. It was an awful, nagging feeling that I really can't explain. The key is to keep at it, "every day" just like Mark says, a minimum of five minutes. After a week or two, I was getting more and more. Pretty soon, I was getting a whole sentence, then I was getting two sentences, et cetera. Then I felt GREAT!! Wow, I'm actually getting "something" when taking dictation at 280+. The formula really does work. Just follow the steps. If you want to get enough speed to pass the RMR, or any other test, this is the way to go!

Debbie, thanks for getting back to me. I wanted to know exactly what we are reporting during a CART job. Where do you go to learn what is expected of a CART reporter?

Happy 4th of July, my wandering third daughter ;) I've been meaning to write to you here! Looks like you're VERY happy! Good for you! And congratulations on almost being an RPR! Hope you get the results soon so you don't have to even think about it anymore!
We have sun here today. What a freakin' miracle, trust me! Is the trial over? Did you do anything with the land yet? Are you staying forever? (I think I know the answer to that )
Be safe,
Love ya!

Debbie, I'll keep my eyes open in the JCR they usually advertise overseas jobs. You might just google South Africa Court Reporting jobs, Australian, Bahamas, etc. You could then maybe follow those links. You would be a very good candidate because you've proven that you like living overseas and can do it successfully, not everyone can. Good luck and I'll keep in touch.

Congratulations!!

You have to wait three years now between the RPR and RMR written tests. I think it sucks, and I let them know how I felt when I found out about it.

You can take the machine right away (after RPR), but you will not get the initials (RMR) until you get the written test, which took me three times to get. Passed all the machine legs on the RMR the first time, but I really did blow the written.

Maybe it's changed back since last I checked. That's how it was the summer of '07, so I shouldn't say it's still that way.

Congratulations again!

Writing shorter will help you on your way to more initials, BUT getting to a testing site might be quite an ordeal for you. :)

My son just found out he passed the RPR, so he, too, is looking at getting some more initials behind his name. He writes shorter than I do, so I'm sure he'll be passing me up in no time.

Mark's actual Magnum Steno Club has incredibly challenging dictation and a lot of awesome info. It's cheap and I'm sure would get you on your way to more initials.

Have you tried it out yet??

This is the only thing I can think of, when I am on the job and I know there is a brief, but I ALWAYS type it wrong or I just can't remember, here is what I do:
1) I have a little notebook with me and when I get a sec, I write the phrase or word down to look up brief when I get back to the office.
2) If I ALWAYS type it without the "*" or just wrong all the time I define it as such, assuming it is not already a brief.
3) mark my notes to practice it later. When I'm early for a job, if I have time, I make dictionary defines of stuff I hear a lot. for example, cities, stuff I ALWAYS screw up; proper first names, common last names, hospitals, et cetera.
there are briefs that your fingers love and there are briefs that everytime you realize they're briefs, it's too late. OR, your fingers "throw up" on the keyboard and you just smack some slop. Pay attention to your fingers. If you keep smacking the same slop (in case cat, you can query it and see how many times you do it) define it. Hope that kind of helps.
