I send out invoices every two weeks. I give everyone reasonable time and I usually don't get crazy with not getting paid for a couple of months, but it's a new client and you know what, never again will I do someone a favor by helping them out with a job that they couldn't do. So sorry to all you reporters who do pay on time. Whether you get paid for it or not, I should not have to wait over 7 months to be paid. I think I've waited long enough.
Thank you everyone for your comments.
We do it a bit differently in Detroit. Tires and wheels missing (a grand, maybe) get people's attention ....KIDDING!,,,but, seriously, give one notice in writing with a phone call backup, and CBRB notification. In the future, don't work for people that don't have the integrity to back up their word.
Cheers!
I've had a similar issue recently. It's only about 50 days overdue, I used to work at a collection agency and I know the ropes with that. It's easier for them to collect if it's fairly new. I also figured that after a month and a half of hounding without a single response means that she had no intention of paying to begin with and my efforts were pointless. I've already turned my reporter over and I've washed my hands of it. It's a fairly small amount, but I feel that we need to stand our ground with unethical reporters. I know that there aren't very many and I hope no one takes offense to that, but it does happen. I'm hoping that this will prevent her from doing it to another Scopist in the future.
I'd also like to suggest that you do not publish her name. I have been on another blog and a Scopist did publish the name apparently (I didn't see that part of the blog) and someone said that she could be sued for that. I don't know if that's true or not, but I wouldn't take the chance.
Fyi - make sure if you do file suit in small clams you bring previous invoices and checks issued to show that you had a verbal agreement/working agreement that work was being paid in a reasonable amount of time which in previous invoices was way less than six months. Otherwise, if you don't have anything written on when an agreement was in place for payment, the Court decides on when is a reasonable amount of time.
I doubt Kathy was doing a bad job if the reporter continued using her for 6 months.
that's enough for me to conclude that the reporter is not a good human being.
I would say sue her in small claims court immediately if she says you did a bad job please tell the judge about the six months.
good luck
