I'm a CSR!! Well, not technically until I get the #, blah blah.. but I PASSED!!!! Just got the results today, which was a huge surprise because the test was only 3 weeks ago yesterday.
Therese - I learned StenEd theory because that's what my school teaches. I've never really looked into other theories so I can't say it's the best, but it's worked for me. It's a realtime theory, which is the most important thing to look for in a theory. One thing I like about it is that all of the three softwares that I've tried have come with StenEd dictionaries, so I didn't have to waste time creating the basics of a dictionary.
I went to a regular school. I'm lucky because my school is part of an adult vocational school that's in the city unified school district, so my tuition is only $600 a year, which is insanely cheap. It's been good for me having someplace I have to go for a dedicated amount of time. Not to mention the support of teachers and friends. I don't think I would have done as well if I had done it from home, but that's just me..and my 2-year-old running around.
I did theory using the 400SRTs that the school provided (only for theory) and then bought a Stentura 8000 off craigslist. I liked it because between theory and 160 I didn't have software, and the on-screen translation let me check if I was writing a word correctly. That was another advantage to StenEd. Stenograph (and maybe others?) has a premade dictionary disk you can load on your writer. You can find good deals here http://www.stenosearch.com/_connect/classified.htm or get one refurbished with a warranty at http://www.acculaw.com/ and http://www.stenotrader.com/
Don't worry about the computerized stuff. Just learn your theory and you will be fine.
Good luck to you and all the other students on this thread!
Heather,
Congradualations. I just want to say that I am a returning student. I went to CR school back in 1989, had to quit do to certain issues. So, basically I am a little scared, with all this new computerized technology they have now. I was just wondering what theory you learned on and did you do on-line schooling or attend a regular school. I learned on the Merit theory which basically nobody as heard of. So again good luck and congradulations. Also, what writer did you learn on? By the way this is a great site, I'm fairly new to it too.
