What I knew my first year out - emergencies

One of the most important numbers to get is the after-hours emergency number.

What? What's that?

We've taken those jobs where the attorney says it's only ten more minutes. And yet three hours later you're still going. Or we get a time estimate of three hours. And yet, seven-plus hours later, you're still going. You child is waiting at childcare waiting for someone to pick them up. You're physically wrung out. You're looking at 300-plus pages. Oh, by the way, around hour 5, they tell you we're going to need this by 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. What!!??!!! The agency didn't say anything about expedite.

This is why it is very important to get the after-hours emergency number for the agency. That's the number you can call and say, hey, I need a relief reporter in here. Sometimes the calendar person will have a direct line you can call and leave a message and they're checking it 24/7.

It's also good to have when the attorney decides at 6:57, we're going to go home now, but we want to continue this tomorrow morning, we need a reporter and they look at you. If you can take it great. You still need to call it in. If you're already booked with another agency, or they're expecting you to get a rough draft out tonight and you don't think you'll be able to face another day, call the agency and get in contact with the calendar person and let them know they need to find someone to cover the job.
