I still have the MeritWriter - still brand new.  Never did get it to work with DigitalCat.  I don't think it will work with any software.   The writer really has no monetary value.

I think I  am going to entertain myself and take it apart.  Take out the disk thing. the platen, platen motor - make it a paperless writer.  I want to look for and remove anything that is "manufacturer specific and special" and is keeping it from working.

Anybody ever taken a writer apart and modified it - and was actually successful?

Boy, aren't you brave.  I've never taken anything apart except for a flashlight, that's the extent of it.  Good luck to you.  I guess if it has no value to you at this point, can't hurt anything.  Let us know how it goes!!

Well, I did get it taken apart.  It was surprising how much better the stroking is when I got clutch off.  I took out the batteries.  I removed the CD drive and the several connections.  It now weighs five pounds.

I plugged it in, and yes, it works.  My thinking is if I get the right USB to serial port adapter it will work.

You should try the FTDI USB to serial adaptor, It emulates the rs232 chip 100%.
