Feast or Famine

Sittin' by that phone, twiddling your thumbs as the crickets are loudly chirping away?  Maybe it was the shower you decided to skip to take that last-minute emergency depo blast that went out on CSR Nation. Is it the bad haircut you just got? Or maybe your breath stinks. If you're wondering if anyone else is in the same boat, join this group and just ask! :D

If you're getting pale and starting to forget what the sunshine looks like, share the good news!

Well, it's feast time for me.  As soon as the election was over I got slammed!.  It's wonderful!

I agree with Kellie.  The second week in October I billed out more than my entire monthly $$ goal.  The week of the 15th, supposed to be doing two days on a same case from the week before, but at 4:30 on Monday they settle right in the middle of a depo.  I had taken the rest of the week off to catch up from what didn't expedite in anticipation of the four-day depo for this next week, so ended up not scheduling anything.  Yesterday the four-day for next week settled and so far I only have one day re-booked.  I'm sure I could re-book almost the whole week if I wanted to put just anything on calendar, but I've got to admit, as busy as it's been, I'm getting picky.  And yesterday I actually had enough free time to book a massage at the new place up the street.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Michele.  We missed you here.

Hi.  Due to a big case at one of my regular firms, I've had a good year so far. I have been having many ups and downs the past few weeks though.  Two 250-page expert witness expedites in one week, then 4 all-days booked the next.  This past week only 1 of 4 depos actually confirms. And the one that did go was a neurosurgeon with marbles in his mouth that lasted 5 hours - no lunch break. This next week I had a Tuesday and Wednesday hearing and a Friday insurance job.  This morning the hearing got moved.  Hours later get call for Monday job for out-of-town attorneys.  Then they add Tuesday an hour after that.  Tuesday going until 8 pm.  I can't take Tuesday because of school function I can't miss at 6:30.  Typical freelancer madness.  The good news is now that Wednesday job cancelled I can go to jewelry party a friend is having that night :)   You've got to look for the "silver" lining or you'll go crazy ;)

Hi Michele,

I just read your posting about possibly needing a proofreader.  I have been a freelance reporter for 29 years, plus I proofread for other reporters.  Feel free to contact me at  lindhan at mvn.net.   Thank you!   Linda

The past two weeks have been busy for me. Instead of me calling for work, I have agencies calling me. I'm in SoCal. I'm trying to take advantage all I can before the holidays come knocking...

Hi, Michele,

So sorry to hear about the loss of your mother.  I will keep you in my prayers.

I started my own firm August 16th of this year b/c the firm I had been working for shut down.  I was pretty slow working for them.  I had to go outside the firm for probably 50 percent of my work.

Since I started my own shop I have been going at what I like to think of as a Goldilocks' pace.  I have rarely experienced this in the world of court reporting.  It's usually what you are experiencing, so busy you don't have time to sleep or you are so slow you worry about paying your bills.

Anyway, good to see you back on here.  I've missed you.

Again, so sorry about your mom.

Janiece

I was wondering if things have picked up across the country.  I have been out of the loop on the forum, in general, for several months.  My mother passed away, and events leading up to that were very time consuming, so my frame of reference is a little off as to the rest of the court reporting world.

That being said, this summer was without a doubt the worst one I've seen in my 26 years of reporting.  I was very, very concerned.  One of  my last posts on CSR was around the start of the year after I finished a huge 10 day, daily turn-around job.  Thank God I had that job, because it carried me through the slow spell.  I know others are not so fortunate.

Now that tide has turned and I am slammed.  Again, very thankful, but very tired.  The phone calls for expedite and overnight back orders started last Wednesday and hasn't stopped.  I'm in Florida and they do that type of crazy stuff, like "holds."  What you may not realize is a large percentage of them turn into overnights/expedites.  I've pushed out 620 pages in the past three days and sat in a full day of trial yesterday to cover for a friend.  The entire cross of the plaintiff was ordered for delivery this morning.  As soon as I hit the "send" button,  my office called and someone wanted another transcript today.  It's not due until Tuesday, and I'll email it over the weekend.  I simply could not do an adequate job on a 120 pager on three hours sleep, and I've burned out my proofreader.

In fact, I need a backup proofreader.  Maybe I'll meander over the proofreading section....
