Eclipse Version 5 Users

This group is for Version 5 users to share what aspects of Version 5 they are using and why.....as well as requests for help as problems arise using Version 5.

I just downloaded Version 5 (a year after it came out), and I feel like I'm learning Eclipse all over again.

Would greatly appreciate input from other Version 5 users.

I've been able to get my Eclipse key to work when plugged into a hub.  Maybe you just have to play around with it and see if one of them will let you in.  I've also heard people say that not all of your ports on your laptop are necessarily "powered".  I dont' know how you find out, but if one USB port isn't letting your Eclipse key work in a 4-port hub, then change which port you're using on your laptop and see if that works.  I thought the same thing, too, but just kept switching them around and found one that worked.

I've never worried about what kind of laptop someone recommends for their software.  Any new one on the market will do what you need it to do CAT-wise as long as you don't run every other program you have and use it as your main computer.  I've always had LOTS of stuff on my laptops but do all of my major work on a desktop, meaning invoicing, production, all that stuff.  My laptop is mainly taking a job and editing it sometimes but I don't run a lot of other software on it.

As far as the convention in Vegas, can't wait to meet some of y'all there!  Thanks for the info.

And as for the USB hub, I think if you are having problems with using a hub, it's usually because it's not getting enough "juice" from the laptop when you start splitting it off and you need a powered hub that plugs in with an AC adapter so that it can put out enough power to all of your gadgets.  I, too, had to use a laptop port for my Stenocast when I was using that, but I got rid of that and use that octopus looking hub for my bluetooth that runs my realtime now.

And if you're running out and that doesn't work, all the more reason to go wireless for your realtime connection from your writer to your laptop.  You'll love it and wonder why it took you so long to get rid of that blasted cable dangling between your feet.

Tech support told me the key has to be directly connected to the laptop.  I got the air card twice before and returned it because I couldn't send my audio files through it because the files are too large.  However, now that we're sending just parts of the transcript at a time, it shouldn't be as much of a problem I don't think.

I should have set this up before so I'm not at the mercy of whichever agency I'm at.  Don't know what I was thinking.

Okay.  Job just canceled, so better get on down to the Verizon store today and take care of this.  I like the iPhone idea but don't want to buy a new phone yet.  Decisions, decisions!

Susan, my Verizon aircard costs $50/mo, but I just purchased a smartphone with the hopes of being able to tether that instead, thereby eliminating my $50/mo aircard.  I should get the phone today.  If it works, I'll save $30/mo (I hate giving Verizon as much as I do each month!), plus I'll have a hotspot for, I think, four users. We'll see.

The Boosteroo is an amplification device for my audio files.  It has three output jacks, so technically if somebody was having a hard time hearing, they could also listen to my enhanced audio (and, yes, I actually carry throwaway earbuds in my case, just in case somebody asks.)

Barb, I don't use it to record.  I have a battery-powered mic in my "record" jack (most reliable way I've found to record audio files), and in my "out" jack I have this device http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102975 so I can control the volume, then my Boosteroo, then my earbuds.  As I say, I always monitor the proceedings with one earbud.  With bad acoustics, mumbling/whispering participants, I can increase/decrease my volume as needed.

It's best to install Version 5 from the CD because that way you get the Visualizers.  Then update to the most recent version on the website.

If you install just from the website, you won't get the Visualizers.

Kelli

You can get a mi-fi device from Verizon (not sure of the spelling).  This is what I used to use.  It just has to be in the same room as you, but it doesn't need to be plugged into your laptop.  You can provide wifi for up to 5 devices.  (The attorneys love you when you can provide them internet when they can't get it at the law firm).  I believe the monthly price is the same as with an air card.  I paid $50 a month, I think.

Yes, those were my thoughts, Joyce.  Thanks for the feedback!

Susan...Although I loaded 5 during the brief period it was available on the Eclipse website, when I got my CD, I reloaded it.  If you suspect your current laptop has problems, especially if there's something nasty (virus, etc.) going on, you might want to have it looked at and thoroughly scanned and cleaned before transferring its files to a new laptop.  Having the assurance that the files are clean, load your 5 and you're off and running.  AutoMagic takes some getting used to.  Many of us have turned it off, though I hear it deserves a good trial and will probably give it another chance in the new year.

Good luck.

What does the Verizon aircard cost and what does it do for you?  What is a Boosteroo?  I like the nail color idea, I do that also.
