I am a steno student and need to make some decisions about my next coursework. I am thinking about becoming a scopist, but here are some questions I have about scoping:

    1. Would you be willing to share your thoughts with me on the future of scoping?

2.Do you expect opportunities for scopists to continue?

3.If so, what advice would you give me to prepare myself to become employed as a scopist?

I appreciate whatever insight you can provide.

  • Millie Corbin

I am a new Scopist using Case Catalyst14 looking for a reporter who is willing to give me an opportunity to work with them. Years ago (before everything was computerized) I was taking court reporting classes and worked part-time as a notereader for two reporters.  I typed transcripts on an IBM Selectric typewriter.  When I was offered a job at a very good salary as administative assistant to the Deputy Superintendent of a high school district, my reporters told me to take it.  They said I would have pay raises, sick leave, vacation days, medical, etc., which they did not.  I took the job but no longer had the time to noteread.

I am now retired and have taken a refresher course in legal transcription.   I graduated from the U.S. Career Institute and I am ready to work.  I have the old-fashioned work ethic, which means I don't play until the work is done.  I will make every effort to get your job on time.

My name is Camilla, but everyone calls me Millie.

You can reach me at 928-580-8254 or whereverwepark@yahoo.com

  • Joyce Davis

Good luck to you, Millie.  You sound like a wonderful choice for a court reporter.  You already have worked in the field, you can read notes, you're now on a popular CAT system.

By sure to advertise yourself on CRF and Depoman as well.  CC might have a registry for scopists.  If you belong to NCRA, they have an area where scopists can make themselves known.

  • Judy

    Millie, Were you Wray's notereader?

  • Millie Corbin

Can anyone recommend a good foot pedal to turn the audio off and on when I'm scoping?

  • Linda M. Gallagher

Millie, I have the Express Scribe foot pedal and I love it!!  It seems to make everything easier!  It will slow down the audio without distorting it.  Good luck!!

  • Brytta Fitzgibbons

I am a student about to start my own scoping business, and I have some questions.

    1. What are your thoughts on the future of scoping?

    2. Which software do you use?

    3. Do you know any scopists, and would you be willing to give me their contact information?

    4. Have you ever worked with a scopist?

    Why or why not?

  • Brytta Fitzgibbons

    I really like your page.

I am seeking an Eclipse v6 scopist (or two) ASAP that can handle an expedite.  I was in a job yesterday and no one told me it was expedite.  My regular scopists are all tied up on other expedites.  I have two files - same witness - willing to split.  I'm a realtimer, one of the best writers out there, and I did a rough - so this is VERY clean.  First file is 94 pgs and I need it by this evening.  Second file is 167 pgs and I need by tomorrow evening.  Will pay $1.80/pg.  I just need someone to do a full audio check.  Will pay within 10 days.   Have references if you need them from my other scopists.

  • Leslie Medina

    Hi, Eclipse Repoters!

I've been a scopist since 1988 and have worked on Eclipse for the past 10 years.  I have one wonderful reporter who works infrequently, and I need at least 200-350 pages per week in addition.  I rely on the Gregg Handbook for grammar and punctuation, but a reporter's preferences are my first choice.  I read notes, so I can send you globals.  I do a lot of research on the Internet for corporate names, et cetera.  I use Dropbox, SendThisFile, and other file transfer programs.  Please contact me at lmedina1@optonline.net for rates and turnaround times or any questions you may have!  References upon request.

  • Valerie Shand

Hi,  I've been reporting, scoping, and proofing since graduating from court reporting school in 2000.  Prior to that AA, I've received a BA in French and Russian from Wheaton College.  I live in Massachusetts, near the coast and near Boston.  I pay close attention to your work, meet deadlines, and do the best job I can, just as if it were going to be my name on the transcript.  I have a rates/turnaround sheet, a reporter preference sheet, and references available upon request.  I'm on CaseCATalyst.  Please email me with any questions, vlssscoping@gmail.com or call me 781-428-0979.  Thanks!

  • Brandi Maines

Greetings! My name is Brandi Maines. I have just completed my scoping and proofing training using Case CATalyst. In addition to my training, I hold an associates of arts in business, and am a former legal assistant.  For the past month, I have been under the tutelage, and shadowing of a 20-year scopist.

Since I am just starting out, I am offering to edit, or proof my first job with you (1-40 pages) for free. As of right now, I am only accepting regular turnaround scoping and proofreading jobs for experience purposes, and to build a rapport with you. It is my goal to soon adopt dailies and expedites.

I will go above and beyond to make sure that my work will meet your needs accurately, timely, and efficiently. It is my promise to you to meet all your expectations, deadlines and what is required of me throughout our business relationship.

If you are interested in adding me to your team, please do not hesitate to email me at brandimkc@gmail.com

I use Eclipse v7 and I also have v6 on one computer.

I will follow your preferences and meet your deadlines. Remaining in timely communication by email, text, and/or phone is important to me. I will not leave you wondering.

  • Vickie LeBlanc

I regret having to post this but have been left with no alternative.  Any scopists in the San Diego, CA area do NOT use Kimberley S. Hanna CSR# 12230 as a court reporter.  Although she was very happy with my work and even referred another reporter to me, she has failed to pay me since May of this year.  Very unprofessional situation.  Small Claims Court, here I come.  So scopists beware!

  • Karen Nogueras

Vickie LeBlanc, so sorry you have to deal with that.  Always a risk in this profession, and I hope you are paid in the end.  What software is the reporter on?  Thanks, Karen

  • Carisa C. Grossman

  • Jannette

    Greetings Scopists,

This is probably an unrealistic request; however, I'm going to put it out there anyway.  I am looking for a dedicated scopist to work on my jobs only.  I am seriously tired of having to share.  Are there any scopists out there interested in an exclusive business relationship or am I being too idealistic?  If anyone is interested, please e-mail me.  I am on the latest version of Eclipse and I prefer the scopist that I work with be on the latest version too with tech support.  If you have courtroom experience even better.  If anyone is interested, please e-mail me at jprice2013@att.net.  Serious inquiries only, please.

  • Janet Thompson

Looking for a CR to assist as scopist. I work in Case Catalyst and DigitalCAT. Can start immediately. Overflow welcome. Contact: janetscopist@gmail.com. Very reasonable rates, quick turnaround!

  • Dana Marie Davis

Looking for a Catalyst scopist for an expedite due next week.  I'm on vacation.  It's a workers' comp doctor and it was fast and a little messy.  Full audio needed.  57 pages.  I don't have time to go through the untranslates.  No time to clean.  Help!

  • Rory Bristol

I'm a full-time scopist transitioning from Eclipse to Case Catalyst. I'm looking for a few court reporters with whom to form long-term partnerships. I've been scoping since 2015. I live by Margie's "Bad Grammar/Good Punctuation" but I also use Morson's when needed.

No bait and switch: I haven't been scoping for 30 years, so I'm sure there are things I still need to learn. I appreciate feedback and prefer to enter corrections post-proof when possible. I scope to any level of audio, and I am happy to cater to my reporter's preferences.

If interested, please email me at raabristol@gmail.com.

  • Allyson Dorrough

I'm a new Scopist; just finished my training at the Internet Scoping School.  I'm hoping to gain valuable insight and wisdom from this group.  Anything you can share with me is greatly appreciated!

I'd like to get started working right away in this new profession.  I have several years experience doing realtime editing of financial transcripts for Caption Colorado (now a division of Vitac), and I'm eager to put my skills, training and experience to work in the legal industry.

If you're a CR brave enough to take a chance on a new scopist, I will be grateful to you forever!
