How things have changed since I've been working in court.

Writing - Well, it may be a little premature, and I'm sure my writing will change even more more, but I've added a lot of stuff to my writing. Lots of briefs and court-related phrases. But I'm finding that the briefs that I'm adding to my dictionary are really helping when I take depos.

I don't know if depos are getting easier for me or they're easier in comparison to courtroom proceedings.

It's funny but I've been going out fewer days as well. Not just bec. of the slowdown, but bec. I'm get a lot more calls for transcripts from proceedings from past days I've sat out in court. In the depo world, here in California, pretty much everything transcribes. In the courts, sometimes I'll be getting orders weeks later.

I notice I have bigger piles of stuff on my desk. Turnaround in depo world to the client is usually 10 business days. In the court, it can be anywhere from next day to 30/60/90 days out. And I get to set the schedule. I do have to say that's one of the best parts of the job.

Attorney: I need it tomorrow.
Me: Unfortunately, I already have a large backlog of transcripts. I'll get it to you as soon as possible after I receive payment.
Attorney: Oh, okay.

You'll never be having that conversation in the depo world. Trust me.

There are stark differences between the court and depo world but what doesn't change are hard working court reporters who strive to improve their skills. Keep it up, Kyung.
